Harmony Day -
Colour Explosion Run

Harmony Day 2020

Colour Explosion Run

From today, we commence our participation in the School Colour Explosion™ Run initiative. We ask for your support for this as our major fundraiser for this year. The more money we raise the more we can provide for the students through vital school projects, in particular major upgrades to our playground facilities.

The School Colour Explosion™ Run will be held on Friday 6th March starting at 1:30pm and will form part of our Harmony Day celebrations. We ask that children wear casual clothes on this day, most importantly a plain white t-shirt as the students will be covered in powder from head to toe. The day’s focus is on diversity, inclusion and fun with the added benefit of raising funds for our school.

HOW DOES MY CHILD FUNDRAISE? Students have now received a Sponsorship Form with instructions on how to raise money and order prizes. Students obtain donations in cash using the Sponsorship Form together with online fundraising.

Students who raise as little as $10 or more will receive an incentive prize for their efforts. But why not aim higher? You have the option to choose up to five (5) prizes and this will set your fundraising goal. Family and friends are your greatest supporters, so ask them first for your support. You will reach your fundraising goal in no time.

Create a Student Profile Page at which is unique to you. There are also some great features like creating your own avatar, selecting your prize goal and recording your sponsorships.

You can also register for online fundraising. It’s the easiest way to help your child raise money and to reach your fundraising goal sooner. You can share your fundraising page to family and friends through Facebook, Twitter, email and even text message with a few simple clicks.

For your chance to win a $10,000 Flight Centre Gift Voucher, create a Student Profile Page at and for every $10 raised you will receive one entry into the draw to win. The more you raise the more chances to win.

WIN A CRUISE OF YOUR CHOICE! The highest fundraising student in our school will go into the draw to win a $5,000 cruise of your choice. To enter, you must create a Student Profile Page at and you can view your ranking on our school’s leaderboard.

COLOUR POWDER: The colour powder used in our event has been sourced direct from India, the home of Holi Powder. It is made of high quality corn starch and permitted food colours. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, skin safe and environmentally friendly. Toxicological Risk Assessment and ingredient listings can be obtained from the School Office upon request. Students with asthma are advised to be careful in their decision to participate.

HOW TO ORDER PRIZES? To reward your child for their efforts, they will receive incentive prizes based on the total amount of sponsorship dollars raised in cash and online. You have two options to place your prize order:

1. Login to your Student Profile Page at Once the fundraiser has finished, click the ‘ORDER MY PRIZE’ button via the dashboard, OR

2. Complete the back page of the Sponsorship Form and return to the school for processing.

Please note, all donations need to be finalised on or before Friday 6th March and student prizes will be delivered shortly after.

Thank you in advance for your participation, and get ready for a BLAST OF COLOUR! Happy fundraising!

Dear Parents,

We are currently in the process of reviewing our School Homework Policy.  The Homework Policy at St Andrew’s was last reviewed in 2014.  It is timely that as a school we review the policy in light of evidence and current research in relation to homework.  In reviewing the policy the school context will be taken into consideration, along with the voice of staff, students and parents. As a school we have commenced the review of the Homework Policy with members of the Education Board and School Leadership Team. The Education Board is a team made up of representatives from school leadership, Father Joe and 6 parents who act on your behalf as representatives of the parent community.  Our aim will be to have the policy completed by the end of Term 1 and ready for the school community at the beginning of Term 2.

In the interim the emphasis on homework for students from F- 6 is to establish positive reading habits. The benefits of establishing positive reading habits are well researched with many benefits for students. Establishing positive reading habits includes reading to your child, listening to your child read and discussing what they are reading to ensure they understand the text.

Should you wish to discuss this further please feel free to contact me.

Year 6 Hoodies Presentations-  Friday 28th February (2.50pm)

Each year in term 1 our Year 6 students are handed their Year 6 level hoodies which they take great pride in wearing throughout the year, even on days of extreme heat!   Commencing this year we aim to make the handing over of these Hoodies a very special moment for our Year 6 children.  We therefore welcome all family members to join the school at 2.50pm on Friday 28th February for the handing over of the year 6 hoodies.  This event will take place in front of the school administration area, the same setting that at the final hour of the year we farewell our Year 6 graduates.  Join us for a bit of fun and what will hopefully be a special moment for our senior students.

Working Bee - Saturday 22nd  February (8.30am-10.30am)

Thank you to the 50 parents who supported our School Working Bee held last Saturday morning.   Our grounds were brought back to pristine condition after the summer holidays and first month of school.  Thank you to Greg LaFontaine, school maintenance coordinator, for his preparation of the morning and for his role in keeping 50 parents active throughout the morning.
My thanks also to Kelli Johnston, Michael McDonough and Angela Palombi for their support of the morning.

School Closure Days 2020

We ask all parents to advise the office of any changes to personal details.

Save the Date - 2020
Foundation - 6 Twilight Athletics Program - Thursday 19th March (5pm-7pm)

Parents please note in your calendars that our Twilight Athletics evening will be held on Thursday 19th March.   More details to come.

St Andrew’s Canteen Update - Change of Canteen Days of Opening

Parents will have observed that the weekly canteen menu is now being published in the school newsletter each Thursday and via the Skoolbag App on a Sunday.  With the attraction of providing ‘home made food’ the new canteen has certainly been a hit for our children!

New Canteen Opening Days - Wednesday, Thursday & Friday

We advise parents that as from next week, the week beginning Monday 2nd March, the canteen will operate on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.   This change to the days of opening has been made as a direct result of the large majority of items being home made. This fresh food is better sustained over a three day period, as opposed to the current structure of a 5 day period.    We have also gained feedback from parents that it would be easier to remember the canteen being open over 3 consecutive days and home fridges being progressively short on resources at the end of the week.

Canteen Volunteers

In the coming weeks we will distribute a CareMonkey form seeking interest from any parents who may be available to help out in the Canteen.   Parents are invited to be present with Mina, Canteen Coordinator, from 10am through to 12pm. The tasks on the morning would be assisting with food preparation, sales and cleaning up after the recess bell has sounded.

For the moment we ask ANY interested parents to email Mina via - -   We are looking for 2 volunteers being available each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.   Volunteers would naturally require a Working With Children Check.

Canteen Recess Menu

Around the Classrooms

Year 1/2M

As always, it certainly has been a busy start to Term 1 with everyone settling into life in 1/2M.

Below is an update of our fantastic learning in 1/2M:

Our focus in Reading has been on Fairy Tales and using these to predict, build vocabulary, make connections and complete literal comprehension questions. Each reading session is guided by a learning intention and success criteria to help students complete the activities with a ‘ growth mindset’.  We are always looking for parent helpers to assist during our Reading sessions.

We have been working hard to improve our writing skills through the genre of Narrative. Students have been learning the structure of a Narrative being the orientation, complication and resolution. As a new teacher to the 1/2 team, it has been fantastic to see the progression of writing in our school.

During Mathematics, our learning began with Data and now on Time. Students have been learning about our months of the year, calendars and seasons. We have even made comparisons between Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring and the seasons of the Aboriginal people. Some photos of these can be found below.

Now we start our 40 day Lenten journey to Easter Sunday and have been reflecting on how we can grow more closely to Jesus, God and others. We have been closely studying the parables that Jesus told in the Bible such as the stories of The Prodigal Son which show Forgiveness. We have been linking our Inquiry learning and investigating the St Andrew’s school and community focusing on belonging.

We have also attended a CyberSafety session with Marty McGauran and his puppet Ollie, we learnt about having trusted adults, keeping our passwords private and the need for green time, where we are not using our devices all the time at home.

All 1/2M students should be proud of displaying our BEST values as we look forward to an enjoyable and productive year ahead!

Michael McDonough and Kathy Cunningham

Year 1/2S

We are learning about our days, months and seasons. We compared our seasons with those  of the Aboriginal people who were traditionally living in this area in the past . We had fun constructing a calendar to help us understand our Time unit.

We enjoyed investigating how the Easter season begins with Shrove Tuesday.

We created our own paper pancakes and found out that this was a way for people to prepare themselves for reflection.
