Principal's Report

Dear Families

Welcome to the 2020 school year, particularly to the new families who have joined St Mark’s school community. The Foundation students have settled in beautifully and are exploring the school grounds and learning new routines. The school year has begun well but with the bushfires and families in the school who were evacuated from affected areas and the uncertainty around the coronavirus it has been stressful for many in the community. The staff began the school year with professional development focussing on renewing our school vision and reviewing processes across the school on academic and behavioural intervention. Towards at the end of Term 4 we had families also give input into the vision. We worked through a process encompassing all the input and our vision is:

‘Inspired by faith we make a difference’

Our Catholic ethos underpins all we do and the dignity of each person is paramount. This is not a vision aimed just at the students but all in our community – teachers and parents alike. We want our community to engage with each other, act justly in all that we do and it is our actions that speak clearly not just words. It is about our students being engaged in their learning through quality innovative teaching that empowers each child to pursue excellence.

Each of the classes has begun the year with looking at how each of us will make that vision evident in all that we do.

Attached is our 2020 Parent Handbook that contains school related information.

Tomorrow we will celebrating the beginning of the school year with a whole school mass at 9.15am as well as presenting the 2020 school leaders with their badges. All families welcome to attend.

At the beginning of the year it is important to establish good habits which includes being organised and arriving to school on time ready for learning. The classrooms open at 8.40am so that students can organise unpacking of bags, lunch orders and give in appropriate correspondence ready for meditation at 8.50am. Meditation is an important part of beginning the day as it focusses on the child having a quiet reflective time and provides a calm start to the day.

Over the break there was regular cleaning and maintenance throughout the school:

  • Internal and external painting
  • General cleaning and steam cleaning of carpets and seating
  • New carpet & tables in Year 5/6
  • New shelving and storage in Foundation and Year 5/6
  • Tree inspection and removal
  • NBN cabling installed
  • Extension of tinker yard – this was co designed with Year 3/4 students and Chris Mangoni (landscape designer) and will be completed in February. The funds have been provided from profits of the uniform shop and the Parents Association.

New Staff

We welcome Ms Jessica Earle, the new Performing Arts teacher and Mrs Tammie Sierget who will oversee the Stephanie Alexander Garden program.

This year there will be a change to the frequency of the newsletter. There will be a newsletter next week and from then it will be published and emailed fortnightly.

Term 1 dates:

Stephanie Alexander Garden

Week 1 of the SAKGP with 3/ 4 HD

Wow! What a start to our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program for 2020. 3 /4HD started with enthusiasm and were eager to get into the gardening and cooking. We had a little look in the garden to see how our plants had survived the summer holidays without as much love. To our surprise we found heaps of beautiful, big cucumbers that we were able to pick and add to our yummy salad. Our herbs were flourishing also, so we picked some parsley for our dip. The weeds had certainly enjoyed all the summer sunshine and rain so we picked out a few each and then all agreed we had lots of weeding to do next week. We then headed inside with Mrs Bailey to design and create individual placemats which we will need for seven weeks of delicious dining to come. After snack time we moved into our cooking groups and started creating culinary delights. The Zucchini group learnt how to mix and knead the dough to produce tasty bread rolls with a hint of rosemary. The Carrots group chopped and sliced lots of delicious veggies to create our Italiano salad. The Eggplants group learnt how to peel and mash potatoes to make a smooth mash potato as well as a flavoursome tomato and basil sauce to accompany it. A super effort by this group as they had to follow two recipes at once! The hummus dip was a favourite dish by many students this week thanks to the precise work of the Tomatoes group. We then sat down to admire each other’s placemat designs and share our meal together. It was delicious! Thanks so much for our amazing adult helpers Ros (Harrison’s Mum), Julia (Sophie A’s Mum), Jenny (Jai’s Nan), Miki (Olivia’s Mum), Mary, Sensai Taylor and Miss Donald who came and helped us in the kitchen. We

couldn’t have done it without you all.

Happy gardening and cooking everyone! Mrs Siegert

The parent/carer must submit an application to the school prior to the end of term 2.

Parents/carer who receive a carer allowance on behalf of a student, or any other benefit or allowance not income tested by Centrelink, are not eligible for the CSEF payment unless they also meet the above eligibility criterion.

Where the parent/carer is seeking eligibility based on holding a Centrelink Health Care Card or a Pensioner Concession Card, eligibility will be determined when the relevant concession card successfully validates with Centrelink on either the first day of term one or term two.

If the eligible card is in the name of the student, the fund is only granted to that student, not their siblings.

Payments amounts for 2020 are:

  • $125 per year for eligible primary school students
  • $225 per year for eligible secondary school students.

Payments are made directly to the school and are tied to the student.

  • during term 2 where the parent/carer’s concession card is assessed as valid on the first day of term 2.

Applications can be received over term one and two. Payments are for the application year and cannot be claimed for previous years.
