Principals Message

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2020 school year. I hope you were able to spend some time relaxing with your family over Christmas. This year we welcome 28 new families to our wonderful school, another 35 students across all seven grades. We also welcome one new teacher, Emily Gillham, to Year One. Emily comes to us  from the catholic school in Goondiwindi but is originally a Boggabri girl who attended St Mary’s College. Her family are very excited to have her closer to them.

It’s been a very positive, happy start to the year. Last week we participated in some really good professional learning. Nadene Kennedy from Enrich Education has been working with us since last term on developing our Annual Improvement Plan for 2020. Last week Nadene led all the teachers through the process of writing their own personal performance and development goals.

This year the teachers will be leading the professional development of parts of the Annual Improvement Plan. This is a step further in the direction of building staff capacity and creating a shared responsibility and accountability for what we do at St Xavier’s.

Last Thursday we had an excellent presenter who helped us to pull apart the myths and misconceptions of the PM reading program. Wow, did we learn a lot! The information answered all our questions and it is comforting to know we were on the right track.

The first five weeks at St Xavier’s is all about ‘setting the scene’. The children are learning about the expectations both within the classroom and on the playground. They are being tested in maths, spelling, writing and comprehension so we have the most current starting points for every single student. Procedures learned last year are being revised and of course friendships are being made and strengthened.

I look forward to working with every parent to help create and instill a lifelong love of learning in all our children.

My door is always open for parents. Your concerns are my concerns. Do not hesitate to call or email Jeni Muller for any concerns or for a time to see or speak with me.

Kind regards,

Prayer for beginning of the school year

We give you praise, O God, for everything that is new and beautiful, for everything which holds promise and brings us joy.

Bless us as we start this new year with our friends and teachers. Help us to make the most of every chance we have to start afresh. May we show love to one another and to all.

May the new beginning of this school year remind us that

you give us chances to start over again and again. Help

us to forgive others as we receive your forgiveness.

Help us to learn and to work together. Help us to listen

when we should and to know the best words when we

speak and when it is better not to speak.

We thank you for our friends. Help us to be good friends this year.

Help us to be patient with ourselves and with others.

Bless our school and keep us safe. Be with us as we travel each day. Help us to be aware of your love shown to us in the people around us.

Bless all those who care for us in school and at home.

Help us show our care for them and to say sorry when we need to.

May the Blessed Mother Mary protect us. And help us to live as well as we can, Giving thanks and glory to God as she did.

End of Day Pick Up

All Kiss and Drop cars can you please have the surname of your children displayed clearly on the passenger visor. This helps the duty teachers identify you and move your child to your car faster. The office is happy to type one up for you if you let them know.
ALSO for YEAR 1 AND 2 parents who collect your children from the classrooms, can you please wait under the tree in the eating area. The verandahs are too congested.
Thanks for your cooperation.

Around the Grounds

2020 Swimming Carnival

Friday 21 February, start time 8.50am .

This year our School Swimming Carnival will be held during the day on Friday 21st February. Our Carnival is all about participation and friendly competition. Children aged 8yrs and up may qualify for a position at the Diocesan Swimming Carnival. School spirit is a big focus and children are encouraged to do their best for their House.

For many years all students  from Yr 1 to Yr 6 have been involved whether they are swimmers or non-swimmers. We have novelty events throughout the day for any non-swimmers in Primary.

This year we have had to make important changes based on safety and supervision. The toddlers pool no longer exists. We have relied on this pool to run Infants events. The current water park set up does not lend itself to safe, consistent play for large groups of little people. Activities on the grass take staff away from the running of the Carnival.

Our Kindergarten students DO NOT attend the Carnival.

The only Year 1 and Year 2 students who are permitted to attend the Carnival are those who can swim 25 metres of any one stroke without stopping. ALL other Year 1 and Year 2 students MUST attend school where lessons will run as per normal. Drop off and pick up at school will be as normal for those students.

Please note the following information:

  • The carnival commences at 8.50am. Buses will drop children off at the pool and pick them up from the pool. Teachers will supervise the students arrival and departure.

  • We use a computer recording program to record all results. We require you to nominate your child for events prior to the day. There is a link below to a google form for you to nominate your child. NOMINATIONS ARE DUE BY MONDAY 10 FEBRUARY.

  • Children 8yrs and up who can swim 50m backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke or freestyle are encouraged to participate in those events on the day. Some may do a mixture of distances depending on their ability.

  • Six and seven year old students will only be swimming 25 metres.

  • Children who are entered in the 50m race can not enter the 25m race for that same stroke.

  • The optional 200m Medley event for proficient swimmers (50m of backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle) will be held on the day of the carnival. Our order of events follows the Diocesan Swimming Carnival.

  • The P&F will be running a Sausage Sizzle on the day. Please support them if possible!

St Xavier's Tennis Team named Junior Sports Team of the Year at Australia Day Awards

The 2019 St Xavier's Todd Woodbridge Cup Tennis Team has been named Junior Sports Team of the Year at the recent Australia Day Awards dinner. The team, consisting of the following students; Archie McCormack, Sam Swain, Jedd Smallwood, Oliver Gainsford, Lachlan Gurney, Jazmin Hobden, Hannah MacKellar, Dana Campbell, Leah Keam and Eliza Campbell, travelled to Sydney in late 2019 to compete in the State Final of the Todd Woodbridge Cup Tennis Competition, where they finished 2nd! Over 600 teams from across NSW and the ACT took part in the Todd Woodbridge Cup in 2019. The incredible efforts of this team has now been recognised with them being awarded the prestigious Junior Sports Team of the Year Award. A number of team members attended the dinner at the Gunnedah Town Hall and accepted the award. What an exciting moment for everyone involved! Congratulations to these students on their awesome achievements!
