2019 - Welcome

Welcome, 欢迎, स्वागत हे, خوش آمدی, Բարի գալուստ, καλως ΗΡΘΑΤΕ, benvenuto, Selamat datang.

Welcome to all families to our school for 2019, and a particular welcome to all the new Foundation students and families. It has been a great start to the year and the smiles on the student's faces have been very evident.

2019 has lots to look forward to, as always, for the students and parents. I would invite all parents to become as active as you can in the school community, whether you help at a working bee, sit on School Council, join the Parents Committee or help out in the classroom or with sport. We love having you around and the students enjoy seeing their parents involved in the school.

Whether this is your first year with the school or your last, we hope you treasure and value your time here.

2019 is also our 40th year and we will be looking at some ways in which to celebrate and recognise this milestone. Updates in later newsletters!!

Sport & Excursion Levies in 2019

This has been mentioned in correspondence to parents, however I need to re-iterate this change.

It is no longer permitted for schools to charge parents a levy, unless it has been fully costed at the start of the year. This is pretty unrealistic, so the only choice is to manage each event individually. We realise that this is a bigger burden on parents, especially in a school like ours where so much is happening. It is also a bigger burden on teachers and the office staff.

We will do everything that we can to assist the community in managing this, however there will need to be some guidelines applied to ensure events and activities are organised and costed appropriately. The following timeline will apply:

3 weeks prior to the event (where possible) -     Notice sent home to parents by email.

2 days prior to closing day -                                        Reminder email from teachers / students reminded.

Closing date -                                                                    One week prior to the event / teacher finalise numbers.

* All approval paperwork and payments will be completed on Qkr.

* Where approval paperwork and payment has not been finalised, students will be allocated another class to attend when the event is on.

2019 Parent Contributions

It would be greatly if parents could ensure that they have paid the 2019 Parent Contributions that were sent home last year. These are a very important part of our school income that allow us to deliver the programs and materials that our community value about JPPS. Supplies have already been purchased and distributed so we would love to have the total income to cover the cost.

Before and After School arrangements

I need to remind parents of the arrangements for before and after school.  The Department is pushing the priorities of "Duty of Care" and the Child Safe Standards (see Mission & Values page), which means we need to ensure that all children are safe and supervised while at school.

The school grounds are supervised from 8.40am - 8.55am in the morning and 3.30pm - 3.45pm in the afternoon. Students arriving at school before 8.30am, and/or who are still waiting to be picked up after 4.00pm in the afternoon, will be directed to OSHClub (Before & After School Care).

There can be no debate around this. If this causes you concern or hardship, please contact me to discuss the issue. We cannot have students wandering the yard before staff are even present in the school or after they have left.

New Bike Rack Cage

It is well hidden away, so parents and students may not know, however we have a new cage for the bike racks. They are down behind the portable (Grade 4 classrooms) behind the senior building. There is space for 25-30 bikes and plenty of scooters, and the cage will be locked daily. I encourage students to use this space if they are coming to school on a bike or scooter.

School Council 2019

Once again we are looking for interested parents to be part of the Jells Park PS School Council. Paperwork for nominations will be coming out next week, however if you are interested and want more information about the council, please drop in the see me.

Curriculum Matters

Foundation Have Had a Great Start to 2019!

Our new Foundation students have had a great beginning to the year. We have played many games to learn everyone’s names and enjoyed sharing some time with our buddies. Last week we toured the school to see where everything is and met many new teachers. This week we started our specialist classes including Music, PE, Art and ICT.

New Sensory Room

Jells Park Primary has a fantastic new facility! The Sensory Room is now available for children who, from time to time, feel anxious or overwhelmed and need a short break from the activity of a busy classroom.

The sensory room is a quiet, safe and calming space to allow students of all abilities to self-regulate, re-balance and have their sensory needs met.

It is designed to be accessed as a brain- break space ideally for a 10 – 15 minutes session when we notice a child is having difficulty coping within the classroom environment, maximum 2 children at each session.

The sensory activities include relaxing colour changing bubble walls, a light box and 1.5 metre fibre optic strands which are all safe to touch and have a very calming and relaxing effect when used in a darkened and quiet room, and the rocking chair, egg chair and textiles are great resources to help a child to ‘zone out’ and feel safe and calm.

This room is starting to be a favourite room with staff as well as children!

New Face in the Office

This year we have a new face in the office.  Mrs Bullock (Lisa to parents) will be the face and voice that will greet you if you need to contact the office for anything on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday.  Lisa comes to us with a lot of previous school experience and will be a valuable addition to the Administration Team in 2019.

School Banking

We offer student banking to all students on a Tuesday morning through the Commonwealth Bank.  Information was sent out to families last week. New accounts can be set up at the CBA at Brandon Park. Bank books must be handed in to the class teacher by 9.15am.

This program can only run thanks to the parent volunteers who help out by spending an hour or two at school on a Tuesday morning processing all of the deposits. If you are interested in helping out please pop into the office or come along on a Tuesday morning at 9.00am to meet the other volunteers.

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL

Ziggy has had a great start back at school, settling back into routine and getting used to her new classroom and classmates!

Over the holidays she had a wonderful time playing at the park with the new ball thrower she got for Christmas, spending some time at the beach and being very social and meeting lots of new dogs. Ziggy also celebrated her 2nd Birthday last week with a special chicken dinner and lots of pats.

This term she will be visiting all the classes, introducing herself to the new students and hopefully will begin a new round of obedience training.

If you have any questions about the program please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Small on [email protected]

We are very fortunate to have three community sponsors already and are always looking for more, so if you or anyone you know might be able to help please contact Mr Small via email.

Families are also able to donate toward the cost of Ziggy's care through the Qkr app.

A huge thank you to Mulgrave Country Club for their generous donation towards Ziggy's training and food costs and to Brandon Park Vet for their support of the program through subsidized vet costs .
