Dear Parents and Caregivers, Konnichiwa!

School improvement

All Department for Education school improvement plans in 2019 are focused on literacy and numeracy. At Grange we are well on this journey through the outstanding work of our Senior Leaders in implementing our improvement plans over the past 3 years with literacy, mathematics and learner engagement as the key focus.

In 2019 this has been further strengthened with the work of three new coordinator curriculum leadership positions, coaches in the areas of:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Technology

Coaches co-plan, co-teach and model best practices alongside all classroom teachers to extend their current good practice even further. By our school investing in developing the quality and consistency of our teachers we will develop even more students that are highly confident, capable, high achieving and always striving to be the very best they can be.

The priorities for our Site Improvement Plan in 2019 are:

  1. To improve student achievement in writing, Foundation to Year 7
  2. To improve student achievement in reading, Years 3-7
  3. To improve student achievement in Mathematics, Foundation to Year 2

These areas build upon our improvement work in literacy and mathematics and identify our next steps for improvement. This doesn’t mean that we are not focussing on other year levels in reading and maths, but our next improvement steps are at the listed year levels.

Student writing is a focus across our state. At Grange we have been working hard on instilling a love of writing amongst our students. Strategies such as bookmaking in the early years and the “Seven steps for successful writing” in primary years have been highly successful in assisting our students to develop not only the language convention of writing but also the authorial craft of a writer to inform and entertain the reader.

Our work in using the Seven Steps has been recognised and celebrated through the Seven Steps website.  See link below.

Junior STEM news

We learnt geologists are scientists who study rock specimens!

Theo from room 3 has been sharing with us about his uncle who is a mining geologist and we have been exploring the different specimens collected around Grange.

Our STEM challenges have included making a tower or stack of cups that are stable.

We found that the strongest shapes for building are triangles and pyramids.

News from Room 2

Last week Room 2 Foundation students went for a walk around the school to look for numbers in our environment. Using the i pads borrowed from the library, students were able to notice and take photos of what they discovered. There are so many numbers in our world, on the classroom doors, on signs, on the playground. I wonder if you can find anymore?

School Uniform Update

HATS AND BAGS

We previously advised that Hats and Bags would still be available from school via the Front Office or the Qkr App. However, it has been reported to us by our uniform supplier that many people have asked about having hats and bags on sale along with the clothing items. Therefore, starting immediately, hats and bags will only be available to purchase from Westside School Uniforms, either at the Westside shop or via their website.

Prices will be as follows:

Medium Bags with logo                $40.00

Large Bags with logo                      $42.00

Hats  plain no logo                          $10.00

It has come to our attention also that people are having difficultly locating Westside Uniform shop. The majority of the shops in the block face Grange Road, however Westside are situated around the corner in Falkirk Avenue. Should you have any difficulties finding the shop please call Amanda at Westside on 0450 224 887.
