From the Principal's Desk.....

Good Afternoon Parents, Guardians and Students,

What a great community we have here at Cobram AGS. I see our key aspirations of Integrity, Endeavour, and Community clearly evident whenever I move about the school.

Core business of Cobram AGS is furthering the educational opportunities of all students at the School, and facilitating development of academic and practical skills and competencies. Part of the reason for our continued success is our commitment to the creation of community, and determination to enhance studies and social opportunities.

In this space, there has been much excitement around the school since the last Crier, with the very enjoyable Prep Hike, the fabulous efforts of the girl’s badminton finals, the very successful Year 3/4 Camp and culminating with the wonderful Middle School Social last night (Thursday Sept 19). Thanks to all staff and helpers involved in these events. Your commitment to the continued improvement of our community is greatly appreciated.

As we head into the Term Three holidays and look back, it is inspiring to see how far we have come – as a School and as a community noting ALL the events and opportunities of the term, and the efforts of staff members and helpers that have gone into providing these. I sincerely thank students, parents and staff members for their efforts, commitment and enthusiasm towards continued improvement of our vibrant School community.

Many students, especially those in senior classes, will have school work that beckons in spite of the upcoming two week break from classes.  All students need to ensure that the holidays include at least a short break from studies, and a sufficient amount of time to relax and indulge in other pursuits before refocusing towards a successful study session through to the end of year. Some might call this ‘recharging the batteries’. This is particularly important for Year 12 students, but applies to all.

Students and families should expect to see Interim Reports for all students late this week, or early in the upcoming holidays. A link will be opened on the School website as of Tuesday October 1 to allow parents to book interviews with teachers for the first week of Term Four. Parent/Teacher interviews are the perfect chance for parents and students alike to discuss successes and challenges with their teachers, and address concerns or issues that may potentially affect a student in their ability to perform to their best. I trust that all staff members are of assistance in ensuring as smooth as possible a path for each and every student in the School.  I encourage all parents and students to make the most of the chance to engage with teachers at this event.

Parents wishing to pursue further conversations with staff are always welcome, and are advised to make contact with the School Office during business hours to organise a suitable time.

I wish all members of our community a safe and restful break. I look forward to renewing our association early in October.

Kind regards,

Steve Gale

Please Note: Parents and students are advised that the School Office will be closed during the first week of the holidays, opening again from 10.00am Monday September 30.

Head of Junior School Report

The Junior School continues to be a hive of activity. It’s hard to believe our little Preps are nearing the end of their first year at school and early next term we will be welcoming the 2020 Preps. As we prepare to welcome our new students to the Junior School we also look towards the senior end and prepare to say goodbye to our Year 4 students. This years cohort Year 4’s have been instrumental in the successful leadership of the junior school in both a formal sense, with our 6 house leaders facilitating our assemblies, leading at our sporting activities and encouraging and coordinating the borrowing of sports equipment at recess and lunch. Many fo the Year 4 students have also taken on leadership across the year in an informal manor regularly raising their hand to lead, be role models and spread positivity and a strong sense of belonging throughout the junior school.

In Term 4 we will be readying these Year 4 students for their important transition into Middle School and Year 5. With a range of activities planned to ensure this transition is smooth and everyone is feeling comfortable, the students will spend time in the Middle School getting used to being around bigger people and exploring the wonderful opportunities our Middle School has to offer.

With a busy Term 4 before us, our Junior School teachers are hard at work planning and preparing for what is going to be a wonderful end to the year. Please make sure parents that you mark in your calendar Friday the 18th October for our school Fete and Friday the 25th October for our Grandparents Day celebrations both events are set to be wonderful opportunities for our school to come together and celebrate our great community.

Wishing everyone a safe, happy and relaxing school holiday break. Take care, Mrs Swoffer

Community Service

“Community service provides opportunities for young people to develop the values, skills and understandings needed to contribute to civic well being.”

Year 10 have been involved in a Community Service Program this term.

The vision of the Community Service Program is to try and break down some barriers while encouraging acceptance and tolerance through a range of activities that will provide enjoyment for all participating students and community members. It is hoped that students will further develop respect for those who provide services to cater for the various needs of all members of our community as well as garner a sense of responsibility and willingness to contribute to the upkeep and continuance of these services.

Community Service activities include:

Irvin house and Ottrey Lodge where students have had interaction with residents while participating in activities such as games, art and puzzles.
• Providing All Living Supports (PALS) Inc where students have been involved in a range of activities such as Craftwork, Yoga and Meditation and Woodwork.
• Cobram & District Specialist School where they have read to and listened to students from CDSS.
PALS Op Shop Cobram and St Margarets Anglican Church Cobram Op Shop where students worked with those who run these shops and help sort clothing and goods.
St Margaret’s Food Bank where they prepared food hampers for the needy in the Cobram area.

Students have found this to be most rewarding which has been obvious by their enthusiasm and participation.

R U OK? Day

Thanks to all students & staff who wore their splash of yellow and orange on Thursday 12th September.

This is a really important message; so be sure to ask the questions to someone who you think might need it, or knowing that asking for help yourself IS OK too!

Starting an R U OK? conversation? Use these four steps:
1. Ask R U OK?
2. Listen
3. Encourage action
4. Check in

Prep Hike

Cobram Anglican Grammar School's Outdoor Education program begins with the Prep/Foundation class participating in a hike to Quinn Island.

☀️ The students arrived at school with a packed morning tea, and lunch and water in their back pack, escorted by teachers Mrs Kate Lee, Mrs Donna Williams, Miss Sienna Bate and Head of Junior School Mary Swoffer the two class’s set off to Quinn Island.

👟 First they navigated themselves across the access bridge to the Island, which crosses Scotts Creek, and then the adventure began.

🐞 Students were given an animal identity pack which they then used to find, recognise and name the native animals they saw along the way.

🌿 Morning tea was at the bird Hide and lunch was a beach experience where they also had a good play and run around. The students completed the 2.5km loop walking track ending up at the beautiful open beach.

We all had a wonderful day!

Sports Report

Mr O

With Mr O enjoying a week off away with Mackenzie and his family at the State Netball Championships in Canberra, we have some snippets from our fortnight of sport results.

Badminton State Final 🏸

Our Year 8 Girls Badminton team, which travelled down to Melbourne last Friday, 13th September, to participate in the School Sports Victoria (SSV) State Year 8 Girls Badminton finals did extremely well in their round robin matches, winning all 3 and finishing on top of their pool.

This included wins against Dandenong HS (4 sets to 2), Balmoral K-12 CC (6-0) and Neerim District SC (5-1). Unfortunately, they weren't able to sustain this into the semi, where they went down 4-2 to University HS to finish a credible 3rd place!!!

Super proud of the team, especially all the work they did in preparing themselves for the State finals! Thanks to Mr. Watkins, who transported the girls down and Martin Kong, who acted as assistant coach of the side and assisted with the training up until competition!

What a wonderful achievement to make the State Final, well done girls!

Golf Tournament Results 🏌

Huge congratulations to Cody Rowe (Year 4), Olivia Thompson (Year 5) and Sam Trembath (Year 5), who participated in the Goulburn Murray Divisional Primary Golf tournament at Mooroopna today.

This was a sanctioned School Sport Victoria event, with the top 4 players from each division going onto the Hume Region event in Term 4 and what a result Cobram AGS had!!!

Olivia won her age division, having 58 off the stick! Cody came 3rd and Sam finished in 4th place meaning all 3 students go onto the next level!!! Special mention to Cody, who forgave the first day of the 3/4 camp at Alexandra to participate!!! Dedication plus!!! Thanks to parents and friends who assisted the students in getting to and from the event and supporting them in their endeavours!

Well done and congratulations!

Lunch time has been a buzz at the PAC with Mrs Chmiel and her cast busy with rehearsals for our upcoming school Production, The X Factory.

Careers in our Community

What an inspiring afternoon some of our Year 8, 9 & 10 students had earlier this week at the Goulburn Murray LLEN "Speed Careering" event.

Well done and a huge thanks to the Moira Shire Council for their support of this wonderful initiative and to Cobram SC for inviting our school to share this experience and their generous hospitality.

Thank you to the local business people for giving up their time to provide an amazing opportunity for all students. To have access to your direct knowledge, advice and passion was truly invaluable, not to mention being able to gain a sound understanding of your business and industry in our local community.

Yesterday the Yr 1/2 class combined for PE and as part of our movement unit students teamed up for three and then four legged races. We had lots of laughs and enjkoyed the sunshine, it was fabulous to see the students interacting with other children they don't have in their day to day classes.

Middle School Social 2019

Well done to Mr Watkins and the Middle School students who had a wonderful night at the Social last night! With just over 100 tickets sold!

Well done to Tianeka Van Den Berg, Natasha Smith and Ava Vodusek who each won a $50 Mentha’s voucher for random door prizes.

A huge thank you to our wonderful staff who helped out and made it happen. The food was fantastic, well done Ms. Forrest.

Big shout out to Andrew Walker (teaches guitar on Monday’s) who provided the light show and Rivity Rascal (River Loizou, yr. 11) who pumped out some sick beats.
