Outdoor Classroom Day

Last Thursday, 1/11,  was Outdoor Classroom Day, which Hackham East Primary School students and staff celebrated and took part in.  Over 300,000 students Australia wide and almost 3.5 million students worldwide took part in this event.  Outdoor Classroom Day also coincided with the opening of our new nature play space.   The nature play space was officially opened by Hackham East Primary School Principal, Ms Sally Slattery, Governing Council Chairperson, Aileen Winstanley and Member of Kaurna, Chris Picton MP.  The naming of the nature play space will go through a consultation process with students, staff and the wider school community.

Outdoor Classroom Day is a global campaign to inspire and celebrate outdoor learning and play.  All classes engaged in learning with a buddy class throughout the day taking part in learning activities such as poem writing, buddy reading, creating characters with natural materials, creating mandalas, engaging in a nature scavenger hunt, cubby building and of course exploring the new nature play space.

As has been stated before, learning  doesn’t just  happen within the four walls of a classroom.  The importance of outdoor learning and play can’t be underestimated to a child’s development.  Professor Guy Claxton, a leading expert in relation to Powerful Learning has 8 key words in his Powerful Learning Vocabulary.  They can be related to experiences that occur outside during  play/learning time as well as those that occur during inside learning times.

Wondering – questioning, doubting, curiosity

Engaging – risking, persisting, applying

Explaining – noticing, researching, concentrating

Experimenting – tinkering, practicing, re-drafting

Imagining – rehearsing, dreaming, empathising

Reasoning – analysing, arguing, critiquing

Collaborating – listening, team playing, working together

Reflecting – planning, self evaluating

On Thursday our students, Reception to Year 7 and our staff through the engaging learning opportunities were most definitely in this ‘learning space’.

‘The mud kitchen was the best, I made lots of mud pies’ – Year 4 student

‘When can we go in the new playground all the time, it is the best’ – Year 6 student

‘I loved building cubbies with our buddy class’ – Year 1 student

Casual Day

At Hackham East Primary School we are in the process of setting up a breakfast program.  This program will provide a healthy breakfast for students who may otherwise arrive at school hungry.  We are doing this in conjunction with KICKSTART FOR KIDS.  KICKSTART FOR KIDS is the only South Australian organisation that provides a breakfast and lunch program for children in South Australia.  KICKSTART FOR KIDS will be providing the supplies we need to run our breakfast program as well as organising volunteers to help it run smoothly.

KICKSTART FOR KIDS are holding a "Happy Day" on Thursday 29/11 to raise money for their organisation.  This is their biggest fundraiser for the year and helps fund next year's breakfast programs.  To say thank you to KICKSTART FOR KIDS, we are going to take part in the fundraising day.

Students will have the opportunity to wear casual clothes for a gold coin donation.  Casual clothing needs to be appropriate for school and participating in outdoor activities eg PE, recess, lunch play.  School dress code hats are to be worn when outdoors.

We are really excited to be working with this not for profit organisation and for the opening of our breakfast program.  More information about the breakfast program will be available soon.

Canteen News

Thank You

Thank you to the volunteers who assisted at the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle fundraising event on Sunday 4/11 - your help was invaluable and very much appreciated.  It was a very successful day with sales totalling $2006.00.

Parents/Caregivers and staff are advised that the price of a slushie has been reduced to $1.50 each.

Volunteers

Volunteers are always welcome at the Canteen.  If you can spare any time to asssit in the Canteen it is very much appreciated and valued.  As little as half an hour of a morning would assist.  Please speak with Coralie Goodman or Scott Megson if you are interested.

Pastoral Care Worker News

Term 4 is always so busy and it seems to fly past before you can blink.  Christmas is only 49 days away!!! Yikes!

I always try to shop early to spread the spending out and next newsletter I will talk about de-stressing Christmas.

I have managed to obtain around 20 Christmas Hampers for families in our School. Many families do it tough at this time of the year so we are seeking donations to put together more hampers to help our community. Normal pantry items and special Christmas treats such as lollies, chocolates, mince pies or puddings would be great, as well as some personal care items such as toothpaste or soap. Perhaps you have a few spare items in your pantry which you could donate or you could buy a few items with your next shop.  I really appreciate anything that you could donate. I have placed a box opposite the Reception desk in the front office which you can place your items in.

Other News

The Hackham Family Baptist Church are having a Family Fun day on Saturday 10 November  at 88 Pennys Hill Road to launch their Community Garden in partnership with Onkaparinga Council and Junction Australia. They are looking for volunteers to help in the garden, so if you are a keen gardener you may be interested. We are hoping to have a community garden in our school as well, so please get involved if you wish.

There will be fun activities for the children as well as a free sausage sizzle on the day, which is open from 10:00am to 1:00pm. I have some special Vouchers in my room which will allow you to take home your own vegetable or herb garden box on the day.  Please see me if you would like one. My Office is situated in the Uniform shop and I will be at school all day Tuesdays and Fridays as well as Wednesday afternoons. Leave a message with Lee if you would like to pop in and I will make sure I am in my office.

Parent Afternoon Tea

If you haven’t popped in lately, come and meet myself and other parents on Fridays in the Conference Room, Penney Unit from 2.30pm for free coffee and cake. It is a lovely relaxing way to end your week before picking your child/children up. I hope to see you there.
