 Principal Post

From the Principal. . .

Dear Families,

THANK YOU sincerely to our parents for your support across these past few days whilst the Parish Carpark is being resurfaced.  We appreciate your understanding and patience.

As you would have read in today's email, we will still need to use the back gate tomorrow (Thursday) and hopefully the car park will be finished.

I am awaiting the Parish  to inform us as to when  parking bays will be marked.  Without these bays, parents and carers need to be particularly careful when dropping off and picking up your children!

School Photos

Please remember School Photos will take place next TUESDAY 25th February. Students wear their Summer Uniform and if they have PE or Performing Arts on that day bring some runners to change into. Please note that should you wish to have a sibling family photo you are required to come into the office and fill out an order form.

Year 3 Fun Day activities

As part of our Outdoor Education Program our Year 6 and 4 students participate in a School Camp. These Camps will be held in July and September respectively. Camps are clearly a terrific opportunity for students to strengthen their friendships whilst engaging in a range of new  learning experiences.  Our Year 3 students as a precursor to the School Camp experience will enjoy a range of outdoor and indoor activities  held at school from 3:30 -7pm this coming Friday. The activities will culminate in a shared dinner.

3-6 Swimming

Swimming for year begins next week at SWIMWORLD !  Tuesday the students will undergo  assessment to form swimming ability groups and on Wednesday they will undertake their WATER SAFETY DAY.

All permission forms should be back!!! Remember all students need a swimming cap.... $2 available from the school office. (exact change only)

Working Bee Friday 28th February

On Friday 28th, its Clean up Schools Day across Australia! Our school has registered to participate. We are trying something different and inviting parents to a WORKING BEE beginning at 2:30pm and finishing at 4pm. Please bring your gardening tools. At 3:15pm parents can collect their children and students can join in. There will be a yummy afternoon tea!

Please RSVP to assist us with organising tasks and afternoon tea.

Family Faith Evening - Thursday 27th February

Our Family Faith Evening will be held on Thursday 27th February beginning at 7.00pm in the Brigidine Learning Centre. On the night, you will receive more information regarding the sacrament celebrations. It is essential that the child making their Reconciliation and one member of their family is present for the evening. We look forward to seeing you there.

Social Justice News

These last summer holidays saw some terrible weather elements take control of our country. We saw much of our beautiful landscape destroyed by devastating bushfires. Our friends in rural Australia suffered huge losses as a result of the wildfires.  Many people lost farm stock, businesses, homes and livelihoods. Ultimately some families were changed forever with the passing of family members.

As part of our commitment to helping others in need, the Mini Vinnies group will be holding a 'free dress' day to help support those families affected by the bushfire. On Friday 6th March all of the students will have the chance to wear casual clothes to school in return for a gold coin donation. I encourage all families to support this day so we can help those in need of our assistance.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, which lasts for six weeks. According to the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert, where he endured temptation. Lent originated as a reflection of this event. The season offers an invitation to actively direct ourselves to God, because for Christians, God and Jesus is the heart and the soul of life.

We are offered this time to reflect on what has formed us since our Lenten journey last year. We are given tools to help us enter into this time—tools of being prayerful, of living more simply and living more generously.

These Lenten practices create an environment in which we are able to think more deeply about God and about how we are responding to God’s call in our daily lives.

God of every age,

As we enter this time of Lent,

grant that, through our efforts of living prayerfully,

simply and generously,

we may come to know you more dearly

and to hear your voice more clearly.

Our school students will be attending the 9.00 am Parish Mass on Wednesday where they will receive the ashes. Please feel free to join us at mass, which marks the beginning of Lent.

Project Compassion 2020

Next week all  families will receive a Project Compassion box. Over the next 6 weeks we are asking families to donate money to Caritas by placing the money in the box provided. This year’s Project Compassion showcases the many ways we work around the world with our local partners to offer hope to people most vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice.

As Pope Francis said, “The future does have a name… and its name is hope.”

Through your generosity during Project Compassion this year, you are empowering communities with hope and helping those in great need to shape a better future for themselves, their families and their communities.

Have a great week.

'Great Mates' Incursion

'Great Mates' incursion this Friday 21st February

At St John Vianney's we value relationships as they are the keystone of a thriving community. We sometimes need a little help in this area. On Friday the 21st of February all students will participate in the 'Great Mates' Incursion. All levels will participate at a different time and the program is tailored to the specific age - groups.

The 'Great Mates' incursion explores the importance of a healthy community and, more specifically, friendships that contribute to this. This incursion is designed to equip students with tools required to initiate, create and maintain good friendships that are caring, empathic, trusting and enable students to be confident with who they are. Through a variety of interactive activities, games, discussion, stories, multi-media, and video we discuss what makes a good friendship and practical ways in which students can implement this in their school and everyday life.

Key concepts covered in the sessions are:
▶ What is a healthy friendship?

▶ Creating an understanding in our students that this takes effort
▶ The importance of having healthy friendships that are kind and considerate
▶ The impact of our words and actions on others and ourselves
▶ We all need a group of people that accept us and help us belong
▶ An important element of friendship is communication, empathy, and trust
▶ It's okay for me and others to think, look and act differently
▶ There are simple, practical things that create and maintain healthy friendships
▶ Friendships sometimes involve a difference of opinions – we need to cultivate
values of forgiveness and learn how to apologise when we hurt others
▶ The difference between good and toxic friendships

If you have any further questions about this incursion please feel free to email:
