Principal's Message

Bayside Christian College is a Christian school. At Christmas, those of us who follow Christ celebrate the birth of Jesus in many ways including song and through plays, the reading of the Biblical story and participating in the Christmas message. December is also a busy month. There are a number of celebrations connected with school life. There may also be end of year work and social celebrations. As well as these end of year celebrations, there is much activity associated with Christmas as people buy presents and prepare for family and/or social gathering.  As I reflect on this time of year, I wonder as to how as a Christian I am able to create space to ensure that I have opportunity to reflect upon Jesus at this time, while preparing for Christmas. While an awareness of this challenge is the first step, I would suggest the second step would be to be purposeful in living out of the Biblical story rather than allowing this culture to be the primary shaper of how I think and act.

While there have been a fair few night events, it has been a wonderful week at Bayside Christian College. Thank you to our students who were marvellous as they performed and spoke at our various events. There were many highlights, including but are not limited to, the rendition of O’ Holy Night at the Secondary Presentation Night, and the fabulous dancing at the Year 6 Graduation. It is my hope that we as a community continue to remember that we have been established to be a Christian school and look to honour the Lord through our actions and our words over this summer break and into 2018.

Thank you so much for participating in community life this year. May all families enjoy the opportunity to rest and spend quality time together.

Christopher Prior

Pray for Bayside

Please pray for the Year 12 students who receive their VCE results on Friday, and for wisdom as they consider plans for 2018 and beyond.

Pray for the safety of our families as they enjoy the summer holidays together.

Please continue to pray for our new families as they prepare to join us at the start of the 2018 school year.

Pray for rest and refreshment for our community as we spend time to reflect on God's coming into the world through His Son, Jesus.

From the Deputy's Desk

Keep Christ in CHRISTmas

Christmas is so often filled with so many wonderful things. There's the family get-togethers, the carol singing, the food and, of course, the presents. I would like to take a moment to remind us that the base word of Christmas is Christ, and we absolutely must remember to keep the Christ in Christmas. So here is a little acrostic to help us remember:

C - Caring - We must remember that God loved us so much, he gave us the gift of Jesus. We show thanks by caring for others. Care for our loved ones, and care for those less fortunate than ourselves.

H - Hope - Remember that our Hope in is Christ. He is always there and always has the answers we need at the right time. Without Christ, we are hope-less.

R - Redemption - Christ came for our redemption. At Christmas, we often focus on the baby in the manger, but he became the man who died for our sins. Because of his gift, we can be redeemed and spend eternity with him.

I - Immanuel - This is a reminder that the Bible calls Jesus Immanuel, which means 'God with us'. It is letting us know that Jesus is with us not just at Christmas, but all through the year, in the good times and the bad.  We can lean on him in every circumstance. He is with us to the end.

S - Saviour - Jesus is the saviour of the world. He forgives our sins, he washes us clean and he calls us to walk closely with him as our saviour and our Lord.

T - Truth - Jesus is the only way, the truth and the life. We must share the truth of the gospel message at Christmas and all through the year.

I pray that you all have a happy and holy Christmas, and a safe holiday season. For those leaving, we will keep you in our prayers. For those coming back next year, we look forward to seeing you in 2018.

Happy Christmas, and God bless you,

Toni Steinbergs

Primary News

From the Head of Primary

December in the Primary School has been filled with many end-of-year events and celebrations. On 4 December, the students were able to spend the morning visiting their new class teacher and meeting their fellow classmates for 2018. That evening, 170 students returned to participate in the Primary Dance, ably organised by Mrs Naomi Armstrong and strongly supported by the Primary staff and some parent volunteers. Popcorn, sausages and fruit tubes, were enjoyed by all the students who attended.

Last Thursday 7 December, the Primary Celebration Evening was held. Every student had the opportunity to participate in a musical item on the stage, the Primary Choir performed ‘Jingle Bell Rock,’ and the 2018 Primary Student Leaders were presented with their badges.

On Monday 11 December, the G Block Gym was transformed into a beautiful garden setting for the Year 6 Graduation, by a hard working team of Year 6 parents. The formalities began in U Block, where the Year 6 students demonstrated their new dancing skills, a graduation speech was delivered by Dr Prior - full of advice for the Year 6 students as the enter secondary school - presentations of Graduation photos were made, and then the students were ‘handed over’ to Mr Joel Williamson, the Years 7-8 Coordinator.  A delicious finger food supper was then served in the G Block Gym, prepared by Mrs Karissa Gaskell and her band of willing helpers. Beautiful Graduation cup cakes, made and decorated by Julia Coates, were presented to the students as they went home. It was wonderful to observe the chatter and interactions that went on among the parents and students as they celebrated the students’ time in Primary School.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those people who support the Primary School, who go out of their way to contribute positively in a variety of ways to enhance the community life. It is such a blessing to be able to help support students as they move through the school.

On behalf of all of the staff and students in the Primary School, I would like to wish all our Bayside Community a very blessed Christmas. May you know the joy and peace that the birth of Jesus brings, both at Christmas and throughout 2018 - the most precious gift of all.

May God bless you,

Glenys Bailey

Years 5/6 Water Safety

Our Years 5/6 students got an early start on their summer days at the beach when they attended a water safety day at Mills Beach, Mornington.

The day consisted of some snorkling, water safety activities, beach games, a  'resuscitate a mate' CPR session and a big finish to the day with an Iron Boy/Girl event.

Looks like they had fun!

Celebrating our Year

On Monday 4 December, we held a special assembly to acknowledge our Secondary students many achievements for 2017.

On Tuesday 5 December was the Secondary Presentation Evening. In addition to some very talented entertainment,  each  student was officially awarded with their certificate of completion for 2017, and the  Overall Academic Excellence was awarded to students from each year level. We announced our College Captains for 2018, and they were presented their badges by our 2017 Captains. This year, for the first time, our very first Hospitality students in our Trades Skills Centre were acknowledged, and we honoured our long-serving staff while saying farewell to  others.

Careers Update

Mrs Dawson has started working with Year 9 students in preparation for the Year 10 Careers Program. An important email has been sent to parents and students this week, and students wishing to undertake work experience on a construction site or with Peninsula Health (e.g. Frankston Hospital) need to pay particular attention to preparation/application requirements. Copies of work experience forms can be found on the Careers website:

VET placements for 2018 have now nearly all been finalised, and students going into Years 11 and 12 are reminded to keep their eye on school emails over summer to ensure that they don't miss any important correspondence from VET providers. Students please note that VET Dance and VET Fashion classes (running at EMC in Langwarrin) will commence on January 31, just prior to the beginning of Term 1!

When in Rome ...

Year 7A studied Ancient Rome as their final History topic in Humanities, and we had a wonderful time making some 'Ancient Roman’ food, including pasta with olive oil, garlic, chilli and parmesan cheese. The students really ‘sunk their teeth’ into this unit - good stuff!

Christmas Community Market

Our students outdid themselves again with the final Community Market for 2017. This initiative has been such an amazing addition to the College  community and such a great time of learning (and fun) for our students.

VCAL Lunch

Our VCAL students celebrated the end of another year with their annual Christmas lunch. There was much celebration, joy and so so much food! Well done to our VCAL students.

End of Year Activities

Our Years 7-9 students have enjoyed some amazing activities this past week as they wind down for the holidays - check out the photo gallery to see what they got up to!

Piano Exams

On Saturday 25 and Wednesday 29 November, 11 students from Bayside sat AMEB piano exams. The students ranged from Preliminary level up to Grade 5 piano.  All of the students did a terrific job and were successful in passing their exams.  Some standout performances were Heather Stubbs, who received an A+ for Preliminary piano, Annameike McDonagh, who received an A for Preliminary, and Zenith Malbacias received an A for Grade 1. Sam Simpson completed both Grade 3 and Grade 4 piano exams this year with excellent results.

Congratulations to all students who worked consistently throughout the year to improve their musical skills.
