More Support For Shepparton Students And Families

November 7th 2019

Designs for a new early learning centre in Mooroopna have been unveiled as the Andrews Labor Government also made a series of other announcements to help families and students in Shepparton get the first-rate education and facilities they deserve.

Minister for Education James Merlino today visited Shepparton’s McGuire College to launch the designs of the new Mooroopna Integrated Early Learning Centre, which will offer three and four-year-old kindergarten as well as long day care services. Construction will get underway in early 2020.

The Learning Centre will also serve as a hub for the local community by providing a range of maternal and child health services where professionals work together to deliver education, care, health and support services to children and their families, thanks to a new partnership with the Colman Foundation. The Colman Foundation will invest in staff and support programs to implement the ‘Our Place’ model under the partnership with the Victorian Government that will bring together family services and first-rate facilities.

During the visit, Greater Shepparton Secondary College was announced as the official name for the new secondary school. Along with the new name, the school’s new uniform, logo and values were unveiled this morning showcasing a teal, charcoal, orange and white palette to staff, students and community members. The uniform was developed by a committee of students and parents. Students and parents also helped develop the school values:

  • Aspiration
  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Responsibility

Mr Merlino also announced a series of resources to assist families and students of the new school including:

  • All Year 7 students will receive a free stationery pack to assist with their first year of secondary education.
  • All students will have access to the School Breakfast Clubs Program – which includes free and healthy breakfasts and school holiday supplies to students who need them.
  • In 2020, all Year 11 and 12 students will be given free access to additional online resources and support to help them with their studies. This includes interactive online videos and exam simulations for VCE to help students with class work, assessment prep, exam revision and homework.

Quotes attributable to Education Minister James Merlino

“This is a significant step forward in the transformation of education opportunities in the Shepparton community.”

“The new Early Learning Centre will be an important hub for the entire community while the new secondary school will offer students the chance to access the great education they deserve within world-class facilities.”

Poetry Competition

Dante Alighieri Society’s annual state-wide Italian Poetry Recitation Competition which was held at the University of Melbourne earlier this year. Fourteen McGuire Students: Cameron Blight (Yr8), Georgia Comline (Yr9), Callum Ferrier (Yr8), Keith Jackson (Yr8), Phoebe Johnston (Yr8), Paige Johnston (Yr10), Olivia Judd (Yr9) Angelina Mason (Yr9), Olive McKenzie (Yr9), Tristan Phipps (yr9) Janpreet Singh (Yr8), Dylan Stevens (Yr9), Alexander Teusner(Yr9) and Elizabeth Vincetic (Yr10), including five Year 8 students who competed in the Year 9 section, participated amongst thousands of students from across the state.

We can be very proud of our students who again were excellent ambassadors of our school. They performed extremely well; all were awarded achievement certificates and 11 out of the 14 students received a score of 80% or above.

Four students: Georgia Comline (Yr9), Phoebe Johnston (Yr8), Olivia Judd (Yr9) and Angelina Mason (Yr9) were called back for the Finals having scored 99 or 100%.

Four other students: Olive McKenzie (Yr9), Janpreet Singh (Yr8), Dylan Stevens (Yr9) & Elizabeth Vincetic (Yr10) were awarded a Certificato di Pregio / High Distinction (scoring 90 – 98%).

Congratulations to all students for their efforts and achievements.
