Principal's report

Enrolment of Siblings for 2018

Yet a further reminder to families who are yet to enrol siblings of current students for the 2018 Foundation year. Enrolment documents are available from the office. Finalising our enrolments for 2018 is an essential part of our planning for the 2018 school year. We  begin our orientation program for our 2018 Foundation students on Monday the 6th  November. This Monday we look forward to welcoming our new students and families  to the MPW community.

Capital Works Funding – Toilet modernisation

From Monday next week you will find in our front office diagrams of proposed locations for a modernisation of our school toilets currently located at the corner of Lennox and Eglinton Streets. The diagrams will also be posted on our school website and feedback can be forwarded to the school’s email.

There are three options for consideration by the whole school community, students, staff and community members. All feedback will need to be forwarded to the school by Monday 20th  November.

Comments and feedback can be placed on the diagrams on display on the Office foyer on the paper provided.  A sticker  can also be placed on your preferred option.

The feedback will be collated and forwarded to the Master Planning Working Group to forward recommendations to the Resources Subcommittee and to School Council for their decision.

School Levies

We are indeed fortunate to be supported by our school community. The school levies support school programs by funding consumables that are used in your child’s classroom such as stationery and toner, excursions and travel to interschool sport.

The contributions to the library fund and the building fund are fully tax deductible and are used to stock our wonderful library with great books and to support our grounds development program.

The voluntary contributions  over recent years have been invaluable in funding school identified projects. Successful projects include the establishment and stocking of classroom libraries, the purchase of additional computers and eLearning equipment.

All money raised through these essential fees and voluntary contributions is greatly appreciated and goes directly to supporting and enhancing the great educational programs at MPW.

If families could please finalise any outstanding payments, especially for user pays items such as camps, excursions, year 6 clothing and music lessons, it would be greatly appreciated.

Individual reminders have been posted to families from whom we have not received payments.

There is a copy of the school levy form on the School Website if required. If you need to discuss alternative payment options please contact Sandra Monaghan.

Communication Survey

Thank you to community members who have taken the opportunity to complete the communication survey. We encourage all families to complete the communication survey which will play an integral part in our efforts to improve  school communication.

Please find below a link to a Communications Survey that will now remain open until Wednesday 15th November.

Thunderstorm Asthma

During grass pollen season there is an elevated risk of thunderstorm asthma in south-eastern Australia. Children and staff who have been diagnosed with asthma, have a history of asthma or have undiagnosed asthma, as well as those who experience hay-fever are at risk of experiencing asthma symptoms.

Asthma symptoms can include wheezing, breathlessness, a feeling of tightness in the chest and a persistent cough during these weather conditions. An asthma attack can vary in severity and can be sudden, serious and life threatening.

Thunderstorm asthma warnings will be issued through the VicEmergency app on days of ‘HIGH’ alert.

This site provides thunderstorm asthma forecasting for up to two days in advance which can assist when planning outdoor events.

For information on the VicEmergency app and how to download, see: VicEmergency app

Thoughts on how to reduce children's screen time

  • Be aware of how your own screen use might be setting the tone for your children.
  • Co-watch things with your children and talk about what they're seeing to encourage positive and protective screen use.
  • Research what apps and websites are appropriate for your children.
  • Keep phones out of bedrooms to help with sleep and prevent online bullying.
  • Use car rides as an opportunity to connect with your children.
  • Listen to your children's problems without trying to solve them. Ask "how", not "why" questions to discourage defensive responses.

Mobile Phones

As per our Acceptable Use policy, a reminder that a parent/carer who wishes their child to bring a mobile phone to school must advise the school via letter. The responsibility of the phone lies with the student and must not be used during the school day.

Foundation 2018 Transition

This week MPW welcomed the 2018 Foundation/Prep students.  It was lovely to see the children so excited to come to school for the first time and to meet the parents who were equally excited and supportive of their children in the transition program. Students participated in activities including play dough, drawing, listening to a story and developmental play.

The next transition session commences in week seven, on Monday 20th November and concludes with whole school transition on Tuesday 12th December.

New Foundation/Prep 2018 parents and carers are invited to attend an information session on Tuesday 12th December whilst your child is participating in classroom activities.

Prep/One Activity Night!

Thursday 2nd November

All the prep/ones went to the Prep/One Activity Night. It started at 5.00pm.

When it started, Philippa and Mina were in Michelle and Jeff’s group and they made a jar of happiness. There was lots of glitter and then they put a photo of themselves on the jar. Then they had time to decorate it.

Ryder and Angus were in Cassie and Amy’s group. They created artworks from paint mistakes. Ryder made a gremlin out of his red blob/ paint mistake. He outlined it; glitter glued it and used a pipe cleaner to make its mouth.

Felix was the only one from Room 5 that went to Kim and Carley’s group in Room 19. He made play dough with lots of salt! His play dough colour was blue without glitter. His hands got so much blue dye on them.

After our activities, all the prep/ones met in the gym and they ate lots of pizza. The pizza flavours were; Aussie, Margarita and BBQ Chicken. Jamie  also sang a song, Monster Mash! Then a mad scientist joined in the song. 99% of Room 5 thinks that the mad scientist was Lee from Room 2 but Harper thinks it was Tim because he thought he saw Tim’s shadow.

After the singing, we all got an icy pole and then went home. It was an epically, fantastic and awesome night!

Buddies Session-

This week Room 5 and Room 16 together worked on designing and creating their very own horse and naming it.

It was lots of fun and the buddy grades had a wonderful afternoon!

Library News

Each year the Children’s Book Council Of Australia releases a list of award winning children’s books and authors and award either a gold, silver or bronze sticker in recognition.

At MPW we are fortunate to have purchased a huge selection of these books over many years and have distributed these texts in both the school library and in classroom libraries throughout the school. Michele Birch’s recent display “Pick Me’ contains many wonderful examples of these books and other rich literature texts for students to select from.

Please feel free to come and have a look at our wonderful library and pick out one of these books to look at and read with your child.

Missing Football

Dear Parents / Carers,

Please ask your children to bring their Western Bulldogs Football to school if they think they have one that is not theirs.

Lost Property

In 2016 - 40kg of unnamed clothing and

30 items of unnamed plastic containers were donated to charity each month.

Our lost property is managed by parent volunteers and we need your help to reduce this huge workload and loss of property.

You can help by:

  • ensuring all belongings are clearly marked with student's names and room numbers
  • regularly check (and encourage your child/ren to check) for their lost property
  • remember it is the responsibility of students and families to regularly check lost property and reclaim items

When is unnamed lost property cleared and donated to charity?

  • Last Friday of every month

Where is lost property?

In the causeway at the entry to room 7 and 8 (near the toilet block off the little adventure playground).
