Principal's Post

Dear Families,

We are all looking forward to our Twilight Sports tonight. Eileen Stewart has been preparing the students for the event and our House Colour Captains (Anna and Lucy : Durkin/Red, Ellie and Allegra : Coghlan/Gold,  Bianca and Fintan : Dillon/Blue, Ashleigh  and Oscar : Lyons/Green) have been leading the students in learning chants for the evening.

This is a compulsory event for all students, who are expected to be at the Bill Sewart Athletics Track  track by 4.15pm, ready for a 4.30 start. it would be disappointing for any student to miss an event.

Our wonderful Parents and Friends have organised food and drink for sale during the evening. Parents may purchase items for themselves throughout the night and of course, towards the end of the event, items to give your children when the event has concluded.  I am sure you would understand our reasons for not having parents providing their children with food during the sports (therefore give your children a good snack prior to coming to the track). Students must bring along a named water bottle for hydration use during the sports.

Clothing reminders: Children are to wear either a coloured sports top (preps wear their usual sports top) or their St James Sports polo with a safety pin pinned to the top.

End of Year Thanksgiving Mass

There has been a change of time for this mass. Please note that our Thanksgiving Mass on Thursday 13 December will now take place at our church at St John's Mitcham commencing at 7pm, not 9.15am as previously advertised. This is a compulsory event for all students. The Thanksgiving Mass provides an opportunity for all members of our St James community to give thanks for the wonderful achievements made in 2018 and farewell families and staff departing our school community.

Staffing News

At the end of the year we will say farewell to three staff members from our St James community.

Angela Volpi has decided to retire after many many years as a dedicated, caring teacher, numerous of which have been spent at St James.

Terri Nugent has also decided to retire after many many years as a dedicated, caring teacher and more recently as our Literacy Leader at St James.

Eileen Stewart is moving to Queensland with her family and will continue her teaching career in the sun.

All three staff members will be a loss to our St James community. We will farewell these ladies later on in the year.

Obviously, this opens up opportunities for additional staff to join our wonderful community.

Parish Fete Saturday 17 November

Keep a look out on our parish fete section of the newsletter as well as on our skoolbag app and in your children's actual bags.

Raffle Tickets: We have had a great response so far with approx one third of all families returning tickets mainly sold. Thank you! As I said in the last newsletter, this is an easy way for our school to make money. The fete committee donate 75% of all tickets sold by St James families straight back to the P & F.

Because all raffle books must be accounted for, families who do not return raffle books will need to provide a statuary declaration stating the reason for the non return of tickets. I urge you to return your ticket stubs and the $20 for book sales to the school office ASAP. Any families who are able to sell more than one book can ask for additional books at our school office.

Please return all tickets by Friday 2 November. Families who return their tickets sold will go into a draw for a sellers prize.

Volunteers to help with stalls: these are still required so please see the sign up sheets. If every family donated one hour of their time, all would be covered.

Sunday Clean up helpers: I have been told that his is often left to too few. If you are unable to help out on Saturday at the fete, we would really appreciate an hour or two on Sunday 18 November to help pack up all of the stalls and help restore St John's school classrooms ready for classes on Monday.

Please donate a block of chocolate per family on Friday 9 November at our free dress day

Please also donate a bag of lollies per student by Friday 9 November too. Traditionally, there has been a prize for these donations. This year the first class to have every student supply a bag of lollies will have extra playtime.

Prep 2019 Information Evening

Next Monday 29 October we will be hosting our Prep 2019 families at our information session in the Community Centre. This will also be an opportunity for our current families to meet families joining our St James community in 2019. This is an adult only event and it is expected that at least one parent from each of our 2019 Prep families will be in attendance. Feel free to arrive from 6.45pm for a drink and finger food prior to our 7pm start. We expect the evening to conclude at about 8.30pm.

Classlists 2019

As a staff we will soon be commencing the process of placing students into their 2019 classes. Although it is not encouraged, any parents who wish to make a special request are asked to do so in writing by Tuesday 30 October.  Requests submitted after this date may not be considered.

This is definitely not an opportunity for "teacher shopping."

I would expect that any requests  made are in relation to the wellbeing needs of your children.

All requests must be addressed to myself and accompanied with good reason. Email: [email protected]

 Level Parish Masses Sunday

This weekend all Year Ones are invited to either the Saturday 6.00pm or the Sunday 11.15am parish mass at our St John's church to celebrate mass together.

Parish Stewardship Program

This is a reminder to view the display in the Narthex when you go to mass on Sunday. Please consider where you may be able to assist our parish with your time and talents. Also please complete the leaflets sent home last week and return them to school.

New Playground Equipment

We have decided on the design which will replace the equipment on the south (Kinder) side of the bottom adventure playground area. Our wonderful Parents and Friends have been fund raising towards a target of $30 000 to pay for the equipment. So far they have raised $21 000, which is a remarkable effort. I urge everyone to support the P & F in all fundraising activities, including raffle ticket sales to help us achieve our target.

Swimming Program

A reminder that all permission forms for P-4 swimming program need to be returned by Wednesday 24 October.

  • Year 6 Life Saving Victoria Beach Program is planned for Wednesday 28th November.
  • Year 5 Life Saving Victoria Inland Water Program is planned for Thursday 22nd November.

Thanksgiving Mass...

Please be advised that our Thanksgiving Mass will now be celebrated at 7pm on Thursday 13th December at St John's. The Mass is an important occasion to celebrate and give thanks to our Parish School Community. Following the Mass, we will continue the tradition of asking families leaving the school to come forward for a special blessing. Although most of these families will remain very much a part of our Parish, it is important to acknowledge their contributions to our school.

Red Safety Day-Friday 26th October

Children are invited to wear a touch of red on Friday 26th of October to help us celebrate Red Safety Day. The children will complete appropriately targeted activities in their classroom to their level of understanding. Some of the areas that might be discussed are:

The 3 R's

RECOGNISE - Are you safe? (Body Signals when we feel unsafe can be; butterflies in our stomach, sweaty palms, racing heart etc.)

REACT - How should you react if you feel unsafe?  (plan ahead, make noise, run away)

REPORT  - Who can you tell? (Revisit the hand of 5 trusted adults)

Kindness Cards Movie Session

On Friday the smell of popcorn filled the air as the whole school settled in to watch Wonder or Trolls as a reward for the 1000 acts of kindness that were caught. The challenge for the children now continues, they are encouraged to do small gestures of kindness where the reward is the knowledge that they have done something nice for someone else.

Learning Multiplication Tables at Home

There are so many ways to help your child learn their multiplication tables. Here are 10 helpful hints.

1. Start with the easiest and work up

2. Have fun with counting patterns

3. Display the multiplication tables somewhere in your house

4. Look for counting patterns in each time tables, e.g. 5 times tables always end in 0 or 5

5. Tick off or colour in the ones you know - you'll be amazed how many you already know!

6. Don't try and learn all at once - Pick 5 to learn each week.

7. Listen to multiplication songs

8. Play multiplication games e.g. BUMP -

9. Use drawings and objects to help

10. Have fun with them
