Kids are on Holidays!!

PLAY. CREATE. EXPLORE.

Online Safety at Home

Our kids are on School Holidays right now! Catch ups and play dates are not encouraged under the Federal Government's arrangements. It is important for both parents and children's mental health to be connected with friends and family, especially during difficult  and confusing times. Some of you may be thinking about web chats, emailing, texting, etc during these times ...  This can be daunting for many.

Please read this article for ideas and advice around online home safety in relation to devices (smart toys, webcams, phones, etc).

Booklet for littlies about COVID-19

This booklet is a colour story, that explains Coronavirus in child friendly language.  All Prep students will be sent a copy and we encourage our families to open it up, print it if you can, and discuss it.

Explaining COVID-19

Here is a support you may find helpful when speaking with your child/ren about COVID-19. Please read through this and choose what you believe is appropriate for your child/ren.

Values Awards

The following students received Values awards at our last Prayer Gathering for displaying examples of RESPONSIBILITY:  Austin, Scarlett, Amon, Seb, Mia, Maya, Violet, Caleb, Evie, Lukas, Lettie, Tai-Ran, Ivy, Clodagh, Pearl

Fee Support for Families

Do you have a valid Concession Card or Health Care Card (HCC)?

If so, you could be entitled to financial support in the form of:

1.  Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF)

The CSEF is a state government funded scheme to assist eligible families with payments for their child’s camps, sports, and excursion activities run by their school. To be eligible, parents must hold a valid means-tested concession card, see further information on the flyer below.

  • Families who received CSEF support in 2019 do not need to re-apply as the application will remain active for 2020.  However, if you have an additional student who has commenced school this year, you will need to contact the office to add them to your application.
  • If you have not received CSEF support in the past and are unsure as to whether you qualify please contact the school office to discuss eligibility and/or to request an Application form.

2.  Health Care Card Holder Discounts

Please note holders of valid and current Australian Government Health Care/Concession Cards may also be eligible for fee relief of $500 towards school fees/levies for the current year.  If you have any queries or feel you may be eligible, please contact the school office.

The Catholic System also provides additional funding to the school, per eligible child. The funds for this additional support are provided by Catholic Education Melbourne and can be used to provide a portion of additional fee relief for eligible families.

Our secondhand uniform shop is managed by Kylie Storer with items being purchased by gold coin donation in cash OR now also via CDF Pay.  If you are looking for items of secondhand uniform please feel free to text Kylie on 0430 546 611 with your wish list or to arrange a mutually convenient time to search through the stock for items that you require.

From the Principal...

Dear Families,

I think you would all agree we are living through interesting times at the moment—the likes of which we have never witnessed before. These times bring out the best, and sadly the worst, in people and we have definitely seen both over the last few weeks. I thank you for your ongoing concern and care for your children and your support of the school. I am in awe of the amazing care and support our staff have shown to our children, community and to one another. Each day, the staff have come to school with a smile on their face and ready to provide the best learning opportunities for our children—even though they themselves might be feeling anxious and worried. We continue to monitor the situation re the COVID-19 virus and its impact on our school community. I assure you that any decisions or actions made are on the advice of Catholic Education Melbourne and with the best interests of all in mind.

The Victorian Bishops have cancelled all masses and liturgies until further notice. Catholics are encouraged to participate in activities such as personal and family prayer, reflecting on the Scriptures or participating in a Mass online. The Bishops’ letter concludes, “Let us not panic, nor be anxious, nor reduce ourselves to caring only for ourselves. This is a time to be sensible, practical, prayerful,
and to share Christ’s peace with those who are struggling to feel calm and safe.”

Remote Learning - Online and Offline

The St Paul's staff have been busily preparing for Remote Learning and where possible we have tried to make provision for every scenario.   One of the scenarios we have planned for is that St Paul's may be closed at the beginning of Term 2 .  We are very grateful to you, the families, for your support as we navigate these unprecedented times and learn together.

Remote Learning Plans are designed so that all students can access the tasks - we have planned for the majority of students.  Teachers are experts at meeting students at the 'point of need' - this is our core business.  When students do return to school the teachers will ascertain where they are at with their learning and we expect that, as always, there will be a wide range of progress.  All students and parents, right across the country, will be experiencing the same challenges, and every house will overcome their challenges in different ways.

We understand that some families will complete the work that is sent home very quickly, while others may not complete all of the work that has been sent out.  Staff are fine with either situation because like you, we also have families that need us, and we know that families will do their best, as will we.

REMOTE LEARNING WEBSITE - Release Date: Wednesday 15 April

St Paul's Staff have created a "Remote Learning Website".  The site will contain a Remote Learning Page (a grade web page) for each class, with links to weekly learning tasks.  The main site will also have opportunities for extra ideas and activities.  Families will get through as much as they can, in the time that they have.   Teachers will create a "Remote Learning Grid" on a weekly basis which will be uploaded into each Remote Learning Page, with tasks and instructions in the learning areas of:

  • Numeracy (1-3 tasks per week)
  • Literacy (1-3 tasks per week)
  • Integrated Unit (1-3 tasks per week)
  • Religious Education (1-3 tasks per week)
  • Social and Emotional Learning (1-3 tasks per week)
  • Music (one weekly task)
  • Physical Education (one weekly task)
  • Italian (one weekly task)
  • Visual Arts (one weekly task.  Semester 1 - Year 1/2 and Year 5/6.  Semester 2 - Prep, Year 2/3 and Year 4/5)

Tasks are both online and offline. St Paul's staff have prepared a ‘HOME LEARNING PACK’ for each student. It will have materials and items that will be used for offline activities. Home Learning Packs can be collected from your child's teacher on Tuesday 14 April between the hours of 12:00pm and 4:00pm.  In the event of total lockdown we would expect to get some advance notice, and at that time we will communicate via FlexiBuzz and email with alternative arrangements.

Remote Learning: How do we contact teachers?

Last Tuesday, the first thing that we did as a staff was discuss and define: "What is Remote Learning".  This gave us shared understandings about the purpose behind the professional learning that we were about to embark on.  We then explored options and resources for all students to be able to achieve learning outcomes in the event that we are closed for part, or all, of Term 2.

Another important discussion was around the availability of teachers whilst at home if we are in that situation.  It is important to note that, if we are in lock down, staff will do the job we are employed to do, and that is to support the continuity of education remotely.  The staff have decided on the following protocols:

  • Teachers can be contacted via email, on the days that they are employed to work, between 9:00am and 4:00pm.
  • Teacher email addresses, days of employment and availability, are listed on the Remote Learning Website, at the top of each grade's Remote Learning Page.
  •  Teachers will respond to emails within 2 hours except where an email is received after 4:00pm.
  • If an email is received after 4:00pm it will be responded to the next business day.

Article of Interest: How to home school your kids if kids are at home

What should parents do if school holidays are extended and we do not open schools for a few more weeks?  This article is well worth a read, full of great advice for parents if we are required to work in partnership for Remote Learning.

Home Learning: FUSE Learning from Home Site

For families looking for extra ideas, above and beyond the Home Learning Pack and Remote Learning Homepage, I sent an email to families on Monday 16 March (subject: COVID-19 Update) with ideas for online home learning.    The FUSE website was featured in that email.  This page has been established to support school and early childhood leaders, teachers, students, children and parents access digital resources that can be used to support learning at home.  Please CLICK HERE to access the FUSE Learning From Home site.

Communication over the Holidays

There will be two main ways that parents will be communicated with over the holiday break:

  1. Parent email
  2. We will continue to use push notifications through Flexibuzz for regular updates as they come to hand

If parents can please monitor these communication forms over the break, they will be able to see what is being planned for their child in terms of returning to school in Term 2.  When we have any information or updates, we will inform everyone at the same time.

School Fees

At St Paul's we understand that parents may be concerned about the economic impact of coronavirus (COVID-19).  In our society people are experiencing a loss of income or unexpected financial challenges as a direct consequence of the health crisis.  We are currently holding off sending fee statements to families out of respect.  Communication is the key.  Please remember that we understand that we are all in this together, and we are here to support where we can.  If a family is experiencing difficulty making payments towards their child’s school fees due to the impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19), they should get in touch with Michael as soon as possible via email: mwatt@spmonbulk.catholic.edu.au so options can be discussed.  We are here to assist and a conversation really helps.  If parents communicate with us, we can plan appropriately.

Term 2 School Closure Day

If school is open, there is no school for students on Monday 15 June.  Staff will be engaged in Professional learning focussed on spelling.

OSHCare Update - Osh Club

This week we said farewell to Cherie from Youth Leadership Victoria.  We thanked Cherie as a staff on behalf of the school community and we wish her every blessing in the future.

Our After School Care service will move off site and will join with OSHClub at Monbulk Primary School.    There are many schools in Victoria that are in close proximity to one another and combine their OSHCare services. We are very grateful to Estelle, Principal at Monbulk PS, as well as Philippa and her staff at OSHClub for their support.  If schools are open, the first day of the new service will be Wednesday 15 April.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE TRANSPORT

At this time I am negotiating with Public Transport Victoria for consent to use the daily school bus for transport.  If we are successful in our negotiations, the daily school bus will be able to pick up and drop off students for OSHCare.  Obviously, PTV are dealing with more pressing matters and we haven't heard from them as yet - we hope for a 'yes'!  Because of transport challenges there is still no Before School Care available, but we hope we can offer BSC in the near future.

For those families that require After School Care, we will set up a "Driving Consent" eForm via Care Monkey.  Students will then be driven to Monbulk PS by school staff. Before we return to school we will send you instructions for how to access this eForm.

Where to from here?

Parents will need to enrol with OSHClub.  Please visit https://www.oshclub.com.au/ and click on "REGISTER".  You will need to enrol with the Monbulk Primary School service.

The Portable is ... GONE!

Since the 2019 Country Fair we have been planning, communicating, trying to remove the old storage portable in the middle of the playground.  We would like to place a new playground in that space and all of our P&F fundraising has been going into the bank in preparation for this.  A major achievement occurred this morning, with the portable being removed.  WOO HOO!!!  Now the fun part of planning our new play space can really begin!

Kind Regards,
