From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers, Konnichiwa!

Acquaintance Nights

It was great to see so many of you at our Acquaintance Evenings for students in years 1-7 this week. All teachers have spent numerous hours setting up their classrooms for a year of success and enjoyed the opportunity to share the structured, intentional and engaging learning environments they have created for your child. Over half of the 28 classroom teachers have moved their classroom from last year or are new to the school which provided some additional challenges.  I’m sure you’ll agree with me that all teachers have done a great job in setting up their classroom learning environments for a year of success. As our STEM facilities works are completed, across the coming weeks, we will have even more outstanding learning spaces for your child.

Better Schools refurbishment

As you are aware, Better Schools work, funded at $6,000,000 is to be allocated to Grange Primary School. This work will provide a school refurbishment and will comprise of building works including additional classroom space, new toilet facilities, air conditioning, technology, upgraded learning areas across the school, kitchen garden, library, teacher preparation area, intervention and multi-purpose centre, the installation of a lift and upgraded car parking and nature play facilities. As the school numbers increase so has OSHC, so additional learning and play space will also support OSHC.

The Better Schools work will be staged over the next few years and therefore minimise school disruption. There should be no need for transportable classrooms to be brought in to house classes on a temporary basis. The information below is the planned DECD release of the scoping proposal. Nothing is decided upon- this is only the scope and big picture ideas proposal.

$6 million facilities upgrade at Grange Primary School

Planning is underway at Grange Primary School for the first stage of their Building Better Schools upgrade.

The plans propose to remove aged accommodation and provide new contemporary facilities through a combination of new facilities and refurbishment of existing accommodation.

The proposal includes the refurbishment of facilities to provide flexible learning areas with connection to break out spaces for small groups and also outdoor learning areas.

Amenities such as toilets and air-conditioning are planned for upgrade. It is proposed to improve street frontage along Surrey Street through new landscaping and fencing.

These initial plans are subject to further planning and may change.

Attached are further scoping concepts and plans based upon feedback from students, staff, parents and Governing Council.  I’d appreciate any feedback you have on these plans, particularly about what is missing and can be added.

Regards, Grant

Starting High School

To Parents/Caregivers of Year 7 students,

We know that your child has just begun the school year and the last thing on your mind is enrolment in high school. Unfortunately this process begins early and we need to share some information with you to help you make the best decision for your child. Many of you have been through this process before but others have not.

By the end of this term, you will receive a package which will contain the ‘Starting Secondary School’ brochure, an enrolment form (ED176), and brochures prepared by your zoned government secondary school.

We recommend that you check your local Messenger Newspaper as well as our school newsletter for dates of public and private school open days/nights. (We have included information from some schools below. Others will be included as they become available). These events are a good way to gain an idea about the individual schools, have a look around and ask any questions that are specific to each site. It is the parent/caregivers responsibility to visit the high schools you are considering for your child.

The DECD website is also a useful tool for parents during this time. The website address is go to the links ‘Enrolment information’ (on the right hand side of the screen) and ‘Enrolling in High School’.

You may or may not be aware that DECD secondary schools are zoned and you may not be in the correct zone for the school you wish your child to attend. Your child’s zoned school of right will automatically appear on the ED176 enrolment form. Students with siblings currently attending a high school will have the right to attend that same school (regardless of zoning issues.) However Adelaide High, Urrbrae Agricultural High School, Mitcham Girls High and Roma Mitchell Secondary College (Girls Campus) do not have sibling rights. For these schools you need to follow their separate enrolment policies.

If you have changed address recently,  it is vitally important that you update your details with us so we can make the necessary changes online with DECD. If you think that we do not have your correct address, please contact the Front Office. If your details are incorrect, it is a DECD requirement that you  provide proof of residency in the form of a utilities bill (Gas or Electricity) or a Bill of Sale or Rental agreement.

Anybody considering enrolment in Special Interest Schools for 2019 will need to either contact the specific secondary school direct or check their website to obtain further information about the program and an application form. All school web addresses are listed on the DECD website or simply “google” the required school.  Please be aware that the application process and due dates vary from school to school. These applications are due well before the general secondary enrolment process and application forms must be returned to the school of choice by the date listed on the application form.

There are two single sex secondary schools for girls in the metropolitan area – Roma Mitchell Secondary College (Girls Campus) and Mitcham Girls High School. Neither of these two schools have district boundaries. Parents can obtain further information about enrolment from each of the schools.

Should you require any information at all regarding enrolment into secondary school,  do not hesitate to contact either myself or Merrill Battista on 8353 2688.

Thank you and good luck,

Alex Narcys.

School Basketball Co-ordinator

We are looking for a new School Sport Basketball Coordinator at Grange Primary School for 2018. Previously the job was held by Michael McManus and we are extremely grateful for his contributions to ensure children at Grange were able to learn and enjoy the game. Basketball in the Western region continues to be dominant ahead of many other sports. With the exciting new redevelopment at St Clair nearing completion, coupled with the excellent facilities we have available at the school, it is a great time to be involved with the Grange Dolphins. The role mainly involves online communication with families regarding game times and venues once teams are established. The role will be well supported by myself and Merrill in the front office. If you are interested in this as something to go on a resume or perhaps you have a great passion for the game and want to make a difference, please make contact with the school for further details.  Looking forward to hearing from you.
