From the Principal

Dear Families,

Term 1 Concludes - Friday 27th March (2.30pm)
Term 2 Commences -Tuesday 14th April

St Andrew’s Holy Week & Easter Program

We draw to the attention of our families a letter from the Catholic Bishops of Victoria.  Please refer to the attached.

The letter refers to ‘the precautionary measures underway in light of changes to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Following this afternoon’s decision of the governments of Australia, all organised non-essential large gatherings (of 500 or more) are recommended to cease from Monday 16 March. In our circumstances, this includes the celebration of Mass and other liturgies that bring together significantly large numbers.’

As a result of this ruling masses at St Andrew’s Church are cancelled.

We await further details from the Parish office advising of the Easter Week Program.

Please refer below to a brief update from Fr Joe in regards to the closure of St Andrew’s Church:

At the direction of Archbishop Comensoli and the Bishop of Australia, all Masses in our Church are cancelled until further notice.

Let us pray at home, read the daily Scripture readings, and make acts of Spiritual communion.

If you need a priest Please call the Parish Office – 9551 5666.

Let us keep united in prayer.

St Andrew’s School Holy Week

Throughout the week beginning Monday 23rd March, the final week of the term, school classes will be presenting the main events of Holy Week.

Rather than gathering as a whole school in the hall these presentations will be shared by levels across the school Public Announcement system. The times for these presentations are as follows:

Tuesday  24th March          3.00pm -          Foundation ‘Palm Sunday’

Wednesday 25th March     3.00pm-           Year 3/4 ’Last Supper’

Thursday 26th March         3.00pm-           Year 1/2 ‘Garden of Gethsemane’

Friday 27th March                9.00am-           Year 5/6 ‘Good Friday’

Coronavirus - COVID-19

The rapid evolution of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak continues to be a challenge for everyone in education.  We are aware that it has caused concerns for parents, staff and students. Because the health and safety of school communities is our highest priority, the school’s decision to stay open is based on advice from the Australian and Victorian Chief Medical Officers.

Currently, the advice of Dr Brett Sutton, Victorian Chief Health Officer, is that ‘pre-emptive school closures are not likely to be proportionate or effective as a public health intervention to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 at this time’.  When advice from the Chief Medical Officers changes, we will communicate those changes to our school community. We continue to actively monitor developments and are working closely with the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV).

The CECV is partnering with the Victorian Department of Education and Training, and Victorian Department of Health and Human Services to ensure our practices reflect current advice and support the needs of our school community.

I am receiving regular updates from the CECV, and ensuring school leaders and staff are aware of coronavirus reporting and management practices, and are well-placed to respond as circumstances change.

We refer parents to the letter as distributed today via email and Skoolbag App to the schedule of events for the remainder of the term.

Student Absences - Request for student work for families choosing not to attend school

Given the current challenging times a number of our families have elected to keep their children at home. We fully respect the rights of all families to make this choice.  We have had a few requests from parents asking for teachers to send home teaching materials whilst their children are at home.  We advise parents that staff are currently fully engaged in delivering the daily curriculum at school and as a result of this will not be distributing an alternative curriculum to those children electing to remain at home.

As outlined in the letter distributed this morning (Re: St Andrew’s COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update), ‘If the school was to close for an extended period of time during the school term, teachers would provide appropriate activities for students to complete via digital platforms and hard copies.’

We would advise parents that the most beneficial activity that children can participate in at home would be having positive daily reading habits.

Sacrament of Reconciliation -
Change of Date - Wednesday 20th May

(Please refer to the notification of the change of date for the Sacrament of Reconciliation as distributed on Skoolbag App yesterday, 18 March, 2020)

Parents would be aware of the news that indoor gatherings of 100 or more people are banned.  The indoor ban applies to many places including churches.   Please note that this ban does not apply to schools.  This ban will have a direct impact on the Sacrament of Reconciliation as scheduled for Thursday 26th March.

After a meeting with Fr Joe we have rescheduled the Sacrament to take place on Wednesday 20th May.

We will provide parents with full details on the organisation of the Sacrament in early Term 2.  Please be aware that the process to be put in place does not require a mass gathering of families.

Parent-Child-Teacher Interviews - Postponed

We advise families that the Term 1 Parent-Child-Teacher Interviews scheduled for Monday 23rd March have been postponed until further notice.

Annual House Athletics Carnival  - Thursday 26th March

The Annual House Colour Athletics Carnival will take place during the school day on Thursday 26th March.

The Athletics Carnival will take place with the children split into three levels - Foundation to Year 2 , Year 3 and 4, and Year 5 and 6.  The children will rotate in groupings of less than a 100 students to complete the Athletics events, participate in fun sporting activities with an external company, Kaboom Kid Sports, and with the third activity being to support their house colours by cheering along the athletics participants.  It is estimated that each rotational activity would be of a 45 minute duration. The children will gather on the school oval in 4 house colour groupings prior to the events to participate in the Opening Ceremony.   At the conclusion of all events will gather again to hear of the house colour results of the Athletics.

As advised in the letter (Re: St Andrew’s COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update) this is a child and staff only event.   For the wellbeing of our students we ask that family members refrain from attending this event.

Foundation Enrolment Forms - Sibling Enrolments for 2021

We request that all parents with Foundation enrolments for the 2021 school year submit enrolment forms in the coming weeks.  This will greatly assist the school with our planning for student numbers and for our allocation of placements for new families to the school.  If you are aware of friends or family members wishing to enrol at St Andrew’s please advise them that enrolment forms need to be submitted in the near future.

Parent Surveys - Your Support Required

In 2021, the school will undergo an external School Review which will look amongst other things, at our Catholic School Identity.  Staff, senior students and parents are required to complete a survey which will provide data to be used when planning future directions at St Andrew’s. As part of this process the Catholic Education Melbourne (CEM) have asked that parents from our school complete a survey about their views around faith and Catholic Identity. You do not have to be Catholic to complete the survey but it does need to be completed on a computer. The survey is completely anonymous.

Families last week should have received information providing access and a login code to the survey.

Education Board Meeting - Monday 23rd March (7pm)

Members of the Board are advised that our next meeting will be held on Monday 23rd, March from 7pm.

School Fees

As term 1 is in its final weeks, would you please ensure that at least term 1 payment of your school fees have been made.  School fees must be paid in full by 31st October each year, with part payments being made during the school year.

If you are experiencing difficulties paying your school fees, please contact the school as soon as possible, so that payment arrangements can be made.

Canteen Opening Days -
Wednesday, Thursday & Friday

We remind parents that the canteen will operate on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.   This change to the days of opening has been made as a direct result of the large majority of items being home made.

Canteen Volunteers

A CareMonkey form has been distributed seeking interest from any parents who may be available to help out in the Canteen.   Parents are invited to be present with Mina, Canteen Coordinator, from 10am through to 12pm.   The tasks on the morning would be assisting with food preparation, sales and cleaning up after the recess bell has sounded.

We are looking for 2 volunteers being available each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.   Volunteers would naturally require a Working With Children Check.

What can I do at home to help my child with Maths?

As a teacher we are often asked ‘ What can I do at home to help my child with Maths?’

Students’ knowledge of Mathematical concepts is greatly helped by making links to Maths in everyday situations.

Here are some ideas of how cooking can be used to help your child consolidate Maths concepts:

  • Investigate the units of measurement for items in the pantry or refrigerator
  • Cut the sandwich in half: “Can you cut the sandwich in half creating a different shape?”
  • Mix a drink for the family: e.g. measuring cordial, fruit and water
  • Estimate how much each item weighs, then check how close the estimates are
  • Find the time we start cooking the rice so that our food is ready to be served at the same time?
  • Change a recipe that serves 6 for 4 people (or 6 for 3 people for lower levels). How much of each ingredient will we need?
  • Be a junior Masterchef: e.g. measure and weigh ingredients, apply ratio, consider cooking time, and serve portion sizes

At St Andrew’s, we encourage our students to use hands-on materials to learn and display new concepts. Below are some of our Foundation students in action using materials to develop their understanding of Number and Place Value.

New P & F Member - Jenifer Roshni

Finally, we would like to turn the spotlight on our new P & F member, Jennifer Roshni.  A warm embrace for Jenifer, Rakesh and Rion to St. Andrew's community.

“Hi I am Jenifer Roshni - I am a new member of the P&F committee this year. My son Rion is in 1/2 M, This is his second year at St Andrew’s. Rakesh (Rion’s Dad), Rion and I are a small family of three.

I have always wanted to be part of the school community and do as much as possible to help the school. I believe the community plays a big role in our children’s upbringing and brings families together. The P&F committee has organised amazing activities and fundraising events. I’m very happy to be part of this energetic group.

Rion loves his school, the school has great community spirit. It is amazing to see Rion growing up in this diverse environment, the school teaches them best values with examples. I am pleased with the BEST program and I feel that the values learnt from the BEST program bring out care and compassion to others. The religious education program helps Rion in his faith formation.

Rakesh and myself work full time and we as a family spend time together every evening, doing activities with Rion like building the hot wheel tracks and having Beyblade battles and doing reading together.  Rion loves reading his fairy tale story books. We have a movie night every Friday.

I enjoy cooking, I cook anything from very traditional Indian curries to simple snacks.  Rion and myself are foodies - we like trying different cultural foods – and I try experimenting with different recipes which I like to upgrade to produce the best results.”
