Principal's Report

Assistant Principal's Report

Welcome to the new school year for 2018.  I hope that all of our families were able to spend some additional time together over the Summer break.  I know that the students have begun 2018 with enthusiasm and it has been wonderful to chat to so many of them about their holidays.  A very special welcome to our Prep students, who have begun their formal education journey in 2018.  It is such a milestone in their lives, and I was particularly proud of them last week as they were all ready and rearing to begin their first year of school.  We also welcome the new students across other year levels and new staff  joining the Marlborough community this year.

There has been a lot of hard work happening over the break and I am sure most families have noticed the wonderful artwork outside and around the canteen.  It has very much brightened up that area -  what a wonderful space to have in our school. This goes along with the new canteen menu which begins this week (a new menu is included with the School News).

Last week the staff spent one of the student free days working with Swinburne University in our new STEAM lab. Staff spent the day looking at the curriculum and exploring how we will best be able to use this space to engage our students.  It was great to see the staff grow in confidence across the day and see how incredibly enthusiastic and excited the staff are to work in the new space with students.  All classes have time allocated to use the STEAM lab each week, so I encourage families to discuss what is happening.  If you had not had the opportunity to have a look at the space, please pop in and have a look around - it is a great place for thinking, learning and being curious about the world our students live in.

Our Family Fun Night is fast approaching on February 22nd. This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to get together and I would encourage everyone to put the date into their diary as we would love to see as many people there as possible. There will more information coming to families over the coming weeks.

Parent/Teacher meetings are also coming up soon, on February 21st, giving parents the opportunity to meet with their child's classroom teacher.  All teachers are available throughout the year and as part of the partnership between school and home are available to meet with families as the year progresses. These meetings give you the chance to talk to your child’s teacher about their needs and things that impact their learning. These bookings can be made on Compass, through the Parent Portal.

Also coming up are our Information Sessions. Staff will be presenting information relating to your child’s year level and is a great opportunity to hear about the specific expectations in different areas of the school.

Information Session Dates:

Tuesday, February 13th – Prep’s 6:00pm- 6:45pm,  Years 1/2 7:00pm-7:45pm

Wednesday, February 14th – Years 3/4 6:00pm-6:45pm,  Years 5/6 7:00pm-7:45pm

Finally, I would like to thank the students, staff and parents for a great beginning to 2018. It has been a very smooth start to the year and it is wonderful to see all of our students enthusiastically engaging with their learning and starting the year in such a positive way.

SMS alerts for student absences

At Marlborough Primary we are committed to the safety of all students. As part of our commitment and in response to new guidelines from the Department of Education, Compass has now been configured to send an automated text message to parents or guardians if a child is absent from school. This message will be sent if there has not been a prior notification sent to school that your child will be absent.

The SMS alert will inform you that your child is not present at school and will be sent at 10am. To minimise being contacted on a day where you are aware of your child’s absence we ask families to do the following:

  • Prior to the day, or before 10am on the day of the absence, log into the Compass Parent Portal and mark your child as absent.
  • Notify your child’s teacher that they will be absent prior to the day, or when dropping off siblings.

Please note that if your child or children are being dropped off late, it is still required that an adult sign them in at the school office.

We also ask parents to log into the portal and ensure that mobile phone, as well as other contact details, are up to date as this will allow the system to send the message to the correct phone number.

Please contact the office if you have any queries regarding the automated absence alert system.

School Council

School Council Elections 2018

A vital component of school governance is undertaken by School Council, and each year parents have the opportunity to be nominated, or to self-nominate for a seat on School Council.  At Marlborough, our school council consists of 8 parent representatives, 5 Department of Education employees (staff from Marlborough) and 2 Co-opted community members who are selected by the school council.

In 2018, there are 4 parent representative positions up for election on our school’s council. You can either be nominated by another parent, or you may self-nominate.  Nomination forms can either be downloaded here, or collected from the school office.

Nominations must be received at the school office no later than 4pm, on Monday February 19th, 2018. Any nomination after this time, cannot be processed.

If we have a greater number of nominated parents than seats on school council an election will run. More information will come home to families if this situation arises.

Also, attached to this page is information regarding being a member of School Council. If you would like any further information, please feel free to talk to Neil Butler in the office.
