Principal’s Welcome 2020

A very warm welcome back to all students and families returning for 2020 at Heritage College, Officer and Narre Warren South campus locations. We hope that you have enjoyed the break and had some time to spend with family and friends.

Firstly, we extend our thoughts - and especially prayers - to those who have been affected by the bushfire activity throughout Victoria, NSW and South Australia over the holiday period. We give thanks to the wonderful volunteers of the Fire Services and all emergency services personnel as they perform recovery efforts and support communities on the ground to rebuild. We encourage you to direct your support towards the CFA at this time. If you have a local brigade in your area, you can follow the links to donate directly to support the brigade of your choice here: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/about/supporting-cfa.

Turning our thoughts to the coming year, If you attended Registration Day, you will have signed and updated important documentation for your child. If you haven’t received these items, please be sure to send a quick email to admin@heritagecollege.vic.edu.au and one of our friendly staff can ensure that you receive the necessary documents to sign.

Our Heritage College community grows! To accommodate enrolment growth, we welcome many new faces to our teaching faculty and support staff. We will introduce them officially via the newsletter as their biographies are available this year, so keep an eye on the newsletter. Say hello if you see some new faces on campus and make them feel welcome!

This term, we have some whole school announcements to make. These include the redevelopment of the Primary facilities at Officer, and extending the Narre Warren South campus to provide care for children 3-5 Years Old in the new Early Learning Centre and a new canteen provider. More information will be provided as it comes to hand, so be sure to stay up to date with the latest campus news via the newsletter and social media.

As a community, our values of Excellence, Resilience, Respect & Service shape all that we do - in teaching practice, in service delivery, in achieving results. We give thanks and praise to our God for providing so many blessings upon the Heritage College family last year and we look forward to continuing to see God work in a mighty way this year.   We also look forward to strong academic results and seeing our student body develop and exhibit the College values in the coming year.

Here’s to a great year ahead in 2020!

Welcome New Staff Members 2020

A big welcome to our newest staff members joining us in 2020 across both campus locations, in primary, secondary and ancillary positions.

This week, we are pleased to introduce Ms Ellen Schwalger, covering Mrs Dobson who departs for maternity leave on 14 February.

Meet… Ms Ellen Schwalger

What is your role at Heritage College?

Executive Administrator and Personal Assistant to the Principal.

Tell us a little about your background.

I grew up in a small island of American Samoa, moved to NZ when I was 10 years old and I completed high school there before I moved to Melbourne. Before Heritage College, I was working as a Youth Worker then as a Laboratory Assistant in a Pathology Lab. They are completely different fields but I believe that God puts you where He wants you to be and I'm excited that He has blessed me with a great opportunity here at Heritage College.

What book are you reading, or what would we find on your podcast list?

I am currently going through a book called "Twelve Women of the Bible" it's a great study lesson to go through with some of your girl friends.

What is a quote that has inspired you over the years?

2 Corinthians 12:9 "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" I love this verse because our weaknesses makes us depend on God and He's also the One who gives us strength.

What would you like the Heritage College community to know about you?

I have raised my 8 year old nephew since birth so I can relate to what some of you may go through like reminding your kids to do their homework or to eat their lunch at school and my favourite one is when they've misplaced their school uniform. Come chat with me, I'm a great listener.

What do you do in your downtime?

I enjoy finding new cafes/eateries to try around Melbourne, so if you know any good places, let me know! I also enjoy going for walks and hikes. I may take longer than it's supposed to take but I'll eventually get there. Someone once said "It's not about the destination, it's about the journey".

You can email Ellen at e.schwalger@heritagecollege.vic.edu.au.

Please join me in making our newest members of staff feel welcome.  We will introduce each new member of staff in the coming week’s newsletters.

Mr Sonny Aiono

In a late-summer festive atmosphere, enjoy an evening's entertainment on the lawn provided by the Heritage College primary band and relax with light refreshments available from the canteen and visiting food trucks. The little ones will love the activities on the evening, including the jumping castle and the visiting animal farm, whilst the older ones can try the challenging rock wall. School and House Captains, required for service roles such as ushering and directions, will be required to wear the full summer uniform (including Blazer Year 7 and up).

For currently enrolled families, there’s no need to register online. Simply come for a great night and show your support!

If you are inviting friends for the evening, please ensure they register at heritagecollege.vic.edu.au/opennight so we can provide the very best introduction to campus.

Miss Kellie and the team knows how to bust the last-of-the-school-holiday boredom by dressing up in the brightest colours, playing pass the parcel and having plenty of fun for Party Day!

Vacation Care Day 4: Sand Art Day

Sand, sand, wonderful sand! Miss Kellie and her awesome team were back again for Sand Art Day, teaching their Vacation Care friends how to make their very own artwork involving coloured sand!

Vacation Care Day 6: Candle Making Day
Candle Making with a little bit of science thrown in for good measure was the activity for the day! Gathering ingredients together, Miss Jess mixed everything up and changed the state from solid to a liquid, then pouring the candle, turned back to a solid again!

Language Faculty Announcement

Students in Secondary will now have a choice of studying another language as the LOTE program expands to offer Japanese.  A mandatory unit of study in Years 7 and 8, Japanese makes an ideal addition to the LOTE program, which currently offers Indonesian. The inclusion of Japanese in the program will continue to develop strong relationships between students learning the language and students visiting from Japan via the resident exchange program on campus. In addition to forging strong partnerships, the extension of languages also equips students with additional skills in the global marketplace upon graduating.

Introducing Ms Valli Chockalingam, Japanese teacher.

We welcome Ms Chockalingam to the secondary staff. Holding qualifications in Mathematics and Japanese from Melbourne University, Ms Chockalingam comes to Heritage College with a wealth of experience gained from teaching at the secondary level for several years. Originally a mathematics teacher, Ms Chockalingam says the transition to teaching language came via a Casual Teaching opportunity, and she never looked back. “I love the Japanese language and it is similar in grammar structure with my own mother tongue, Tamil. I have an interest in the Japanese culture as well as the Japanese translation of the Bible.”

Ms Chockalingam is looking forward to meeting her new students and families, saying the greatest satisfaction that comes from teaching is watching students grow and mature. Whilst away from teaching duties, Ms Chockalingam loves to read books on education and stay fit by jogging.

You can email Miss Chockalingam directly at v.chockalingam@heritagecollege.vic.edu.au

Please join me in welcoming our newest language teacher to campus.
