From the Principal

By Marie Beale, Principal

Welcome to 2019

We have had an outstanding start to the school year!  I would like to congratulate staff, students and parents on the extremely successful commencement to 2019.   We welcome all new families across the school and invite you to a special morning tea on Friday 15 February, invites have been sent out via the classroom tubs.

Staffing for 2019

Our teaching teams have already spent extensive time planning and preparing for the commencement of the year and look forward to working with your child.  The teams are as follows:

Landscaping and Netball Court

Over the Christmas holiday break there has been extensive ground work undertaken on the embankments and netball court.  These spaces are starting to look amazing and will soon be open for children to play on.  We are looking forward to planting in March / April when the weather is better.  Our concrete ramp and playground are still in the planning stages and we are awaiting the start of these projects over the next few months.

The photo below is the new embankment with rock walls and dry creek bed for children to play on.  This embankment will link onto the netball court via platforms enabling easy access.

Let's Meet at Mullum - 12 February

On Tuesday 12 February from 5:30-7:00pm we will be opening up the classrooms for you to meet and greet your child's classroom teacher, check out where your child spends their day and share in a social BBQ.  This is the perfect time to put a name to a face and celebrate the start of the year with us.  We hope you can join us.

Bendigo Bank Grant

Late in 2018, Mullum Primary School received a $3000 grant from the Bendigo Bank, Ringwood East Branch.  The money is to be used for the refurbishment and maintenance of our Visual Art Room kiln and the provision of a fence for the safety of all concerned.  Deanne is currently working with suppliers to have this work completed as soon as possible and then we can look forward to a ceramic extravaganza.

Mullumites Playgroup - Starts 13 February

This year we are starting a new community playgroup for families in Ringwood.  The group will operate on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:30 during school term, starting 13 February, the cost per family $35 per term.  The group is open to anyone with a pre-school child and will be run by Nicole Younes and Katy Smith.  We currently have 18 families enrolled.   Please call the school office if you and / or your friends are interested in joining this group.

Student supervision

Every year it is important to remind families about the supervision of students at school.  Everyday, children are supervised from 8:45am - 3:45pm.  We have staff on duty before school from 8:45 and up until 3:45pm,  and each recess and lunch break.  If children need to be at school before or after these hours we do offer a comprehensive Before and After School Program through Camp Australia.  The program opens at 7am and closes at 6:30pm.  It is a good idea to register your children onto their data base so you can take up a casual booking at short notice if your circumstances change.  Information sheets are available at the office or visit www.campaustralia.com.au.

Lunchtime activities

During the term we will be offering free activities for students in the second half of the lunch break.  The purpose of these activities is to encourage positive social interaction, provide respite from the school ground if needed and to encourage friendships.  This term we are offering:

Monday - Lego Club, Running Club, Production Rehearsal

Tuesday - Games, Kitchen Garden, Library

Wednesday - Library, Lego Club, Junior School Council meeting

Thursday - Karate (Year 3/4), Library, Lego Club

Friday - Karate (Year 3/4), Mindful Colouring, Kitchen Garden

Posters about these activities are on the windows of the library and the Science Room for easy reference.  Along with these activities we will continue to offer paid tennis and dance lessons for students during lunch, please see the office for information about these paid activities.

Assemblies

School assemblies are an important part of the Mulllum Primary School day.  Gathering together as a whole school to meet, greet and provide reminders ensures everyone feels part of our community.  This year we will continue to have five assemblies, with a change to the sit down assemblies in the hall, the assemblies are as follows:

Monday - 8:55am - Full assembly with Student of the Week, National anthem, awards, presentations.

Tuesday - Friday - 8:55am - Flagpole assemblies where general reminders are made and children welcomed for the day.

Panfield Ave - School pick up / drop off time

Panfield Ave can be very congested at key times in the day.  The Maroondah Council  parking officers frequent the street and issue parking fines to people who are in breach of the restrictions.  I encourage you to read carefully the signs and note the line markings on the road to avoid a fine.

There has been an unwritten rule with current and past families that travelling north on Panfield Ave during these key times helps with the flow of traffic and managing the drop off points.  We encourage you to continue this practice.

With older children I encourage you to park a little further away from the school and teach your child to safely use the supervised crossings on Mullum Mullum Rd, Panfield Ave and Wonga Road. This is good for their independence and traffic congestion.
