Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers

Weekend Election.

What a busy weekend for the school with the preparation for the Election on Friday and the stalls run by the P&C, Year 6 Parent group and Hazel Orme Community Kindergarten in our Centennial garden area on Saturday. Whilst waiting for your car to be washed, you could buy a burger from the Sausage Sizzle, read and buy a book and then take home some cakes and crafts. It was wonderful receiving the support of the wider community who came to the school to vote. Thanks to the parents who helped on the earlier Busy Bee and to our staff, the Grounds looked great!

Recent Fundraising Events.

Our recent Mothers’ Day Breakfast raised $340.00 and the end of term Colour Run raised $5,500.  The two classes that raised the most money for the Lapathon will have a pizza lunch next Thursday, 30th May.  The students from Room 2 (Year 5) and Room 6 (PP) will have pizza, a box drink and a piece of fruit. Three of our students raised over three hundred dollars each. Our thanks to the families of Lily in Room 6, Henry in Room 5 and Jude in Room 5 for their efforts but also a BIG thankyou to all of our families who were able to support this activity.

District Meetings.

Our school hosted/are hosting various District meetings during this fortnight.  Mrs John and Mrs Zurita chaired a newly organised Cultural Inclusivity Committee with representatives from our local Network schools.  Mrs Wells, Mrs Colkin and Mrs French hosted the District Positive Behaviour in Schools Network meeting with schools as far away as Parkwood attending. Mrs French is coordinating a District Maths meeting for Network schools.  The sharing of expertise between our schools is a great way to see how other schools are implementing strategies and new ideas.

Cricket Carnival.

Congratulations to our two cricket teams who represented the school at the recent Cricket Blast carnival at North Fremantle. We came third in the Girls team, on a countback after winning all four matches and the Boys team came second on countback also, after winning their four matches. The games were played in great spirit. Thank you to Ms Bullock and Mr Robinson for assisting to prepare the students.

2019 NAPLAN.

Our NAPLAN program has concluded for 2019. We were fortunate to have only some technical issues with our Writing for Year 5. Student results will be made available in August. Data collected along with our school testing helps inform areas to focus on and resourcing needs.

ZOO Excursion.

Thank you to the many parents (in excess of 30) who were able to come along to help supervise students for the recent Zoo excursion for Years PP-Year 2. Your assistance along with the enthusiasm of the staff led by Mrs French made for an exciting and memorable day.

Year 6.

Our Year Six students had an incursion from the Red Cross on ‘In Search of Safety’ and are following this up with an excursion to the Maritime museum in Fremantle, today.

Part of their camp fundraising included a car wash and food stall on the weekend. Over forty cars were cleaned during the day. Students had a wonderful time assisting the parents with the activity.

Walk Safely to School Day.

Our Walk Safely to School Day will be celebrated this Friday 24th May. Any students who walk all or part of the way to school can come to the Undercover Area for a snack before heading off to class. They can also enter our free raffle. Students who ride or scooter are also welcome to join the walkers before school.

Cricket Blast Carnival

On Friday, 10th May our Year Six students travelled to Gilbert Fraser oval, and played cricket against four other schools, Winterfold, Fremantle, North Fremantle and East Hamilton Hill Primary. Each team played four games, and our boys and girls team won every game which led the girls to come Third and the boys to come closely Second overall.

Zoo Excursion

On Friday, 17th May, as part of our teaching and learning programs, our PP to Yr. 2 classes were fortunate enough to visit Perth Zoo.

All classes participated in an education program suited to their year level and visited sections of the Zoo that were relevant to what they have been/or will be examining in their classes.

The students’ enthusiasm, engagement and sense of ‘wonderment’ throughout the day was irreplaceable. Please note for some of our students it was their first ever visit to the Zoo. They all had the most amazing day and were exhausted as we drove back to school.

A HUGE thank you to our amazing parent helpers. As a school we value the ‘hands on’ learning that excursions deliver. However, without parental assistance they could not happen, so THANK YOU!

PP to Yr. 2 teachers

PP Mothers' Day Beauty Spa

Thank you to our PP mothers, grandmothers and aunts, who attended our Mother’s Day Spa in Pre-Primary. We appreciate your willingness to allow your child/children to paint your nails, massage you and do your hair. You all looked beautiful!

PP Staff

Mothers' Day Breakfast

We would like to thank our wonderful school community for supporting our annual Mothers’ Day Breakfast.  What a fantastic turn out we had and it was great to see so many Mums, Nans and Aunties.

Thanks to all our staff for the help, we all had a lovely morning.

In Seach of Safety Incursion

Australian Red Cross delivered an interactive and informative incursion for the Year 6 class that taught students about refugees and people seeking asylum around the world and in Australia. During the In Search of Safety program students had the chance to imagine what it would be like to flee their homes quickly through an engaging simulation, and to hear from children their age about their experiences of seeking safety. A great opportunity for the students to learn about human rights, why people need protection and they’ve all been given an activity to practice humanitarianism at home!

Italian News

The IWAAC Leonardo Da Vinci competition has now closed and of the 49 entries submitted by our students 12 have been selected as finalists. To all the students who entered– Bravi! - and to our finalists- Buona Fortuna! - we’re keeping our fingers crossed for you.   I will be alerting the students to more competition opportunities in the coming months.

Thanks to the parents and community members who have already contacted me, volunteering their time to our Italian classes.  To others who may be thinking about it, don’t be shy! If you do/have anything to enrich our students’ learning experience by helping make the Italian lifestyle and culture come alive, please contact me with a short description of what you can offer and day(s)/times which best suit you to lina.hawke@education.wa.edu.au

Election Day

A massive thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make our Election Day fundraiser such an incredible success. Thanks to your efforts we managed to raise more than $5,000 (!!!) to put towards our school, its grounds and the Year 6 camp and graduation.

We are so grateful to all of our marvellous bakers for taking the time to bake us so many tasty cakes, biscuits and more, with a special mention to Jennie, who made sure our stall was filled with delicious treats all day long. Thank you to Jo for her beautiful styling, and to those who manned the stall: Kerry, Georgie, Tam, Caz, Sharon, Chloe, Sarah, Izzi and everyone else who stopped by to see if we needed a hand!

Our 'Books for Trees' was extremely popular, thank you to Juls and Alicia for all your hard work and to everyone who donated books - we had quite the collection for voters to choose from. We are also incredibly grateful to Michael from Urban Forest Care for pledging a donation to our Grounds Committee.

A big thanks to all the Year 6 (and other) kids and parents who helped organise and run the BBQ and car wash on Election Day. Many people in the community enjoyed delicious egg and bacon rolls and sausages in buns, and are now driving around in beautifully clean cars! Thank you especially to Corri, Luke, John, Clive and Lee.

Hazel Orme Community Kindergarten also had a successful day, selling out of their Bake Sale goodies as well.

Congratulations to our raffle prize winner, Mannie, who will be enjoying a two night chalet stay at the RAC Karri Valley Lodge near Pemberton.

Once again thank you all for your amazing efforts, it was a brilliant day!
