Principal's report

Greetings Families and Friends of Moonee Ponds West PS,
 

I am continuing to get to know the students and families of the school.  I am really impressed with the level of independence and authentic interest the students have in their learning. I have witnessed high level discussion around texts especially in our senior classes.  Well done students for the effort you are giving to your learning and to the teachers for the planning which has enabled such deep learning.  I look forward to continuing to view practice and provide feedback in return.

School Council Elections

At the close of nominations on Tuesday June 5th, we have four nominations for three positions in the Parent Category of School Council.  Thus, we now move to an election.  We are following the guidelines provided by DET and will be mailing the ballot papers to all families in the school community.  As part of this process we are including a stamped self-addressed envelope for your convenience in returning your ballot.

All ballots MUST be received by 4pm on Tuesday June 19th.  If you are choosing the return post option, please factor in the ‘snail mail’ time factor, to ensure that your vote reaches the school by 4pm on the closing date of the ballot.  Of course, we will also have provision for families to return their ballot in person to the school’s General Office.   Sandra Monaghan is the Returning Officer and would be available to answer any inquiries regarding the election or casting votes during the election period.

Fundraising Team

What a great night was had last Sat June 2nd at the 80’s Trivia Night. Being a past parent fundraiser, I was impressed with the organisation of this evening, and the wonderful selection of donations that we could all access via the ingenious online auction portal.  I was unable to attend, but was still able to contribute via the online auction.  I know that the music was great and that the party could have extended into the wee hours, as people were having such a great time. However, all good things must come to an end!   My personal thanks to the Fundraising Team for their collective and personal efforts, and to the many families that came along and made the event such a success.   We are yet to discover the figure raised, but we will confirm in the next weeks.  Well done all!

Principals Leadership Conference

Over the past two days (Wednesday and Thursday) Barb and I have been at the Regional Leadership Conference in the city.  Over the two days we were participants in various workshops and were able to hear some of the world’s great educators like Michael Fullan and Simon Breakspear.  We also learnt from our peers, with specific schools sharing their practice around student learning. Opportunities for renewal ensures that educators don’t become complacent and stale.  The Victorian Education System has a strong and consistent framework for school Improvement and the resources for teachers and leaders around this framework are exceptional. 

At the Staff meeting on Tuesday June 5th, staff collaborated to develop a shared understanding of one of the frameworks key areas: Excellence in Teaching and Learning.  There are three elements in this section of the framework and these elements are: Curriculum Planning and Assessment, Building Practice Excellence.  The ‘how’ focusses on evidence-based high impact teaching strategies and evaluating impact on learning.   It is exciting to develop these shared understandings with the team.  In future newsletters I will provide the model and our shared understandings.

Following the closing of nominations at 4.00pm June 5, we have received four nominations with three positions available for the 2018/2020 term of office.

 

We will now be holding a ballot for the three vacant positions. The nominees are listed below.

Science Incursion Day

Last Thursday June 1st all the grade 3 /4 students were involved in a Science Rotation Day. Students worked in all five of the 3 /4 classrooms and were involved in further learnings linked to the Inquiry topic ‘earth Science’. The lessons and experiments covered:

  • Tectonic plates – Earthquakes
  • Chemical weathering- Acid rain
  • Polar Ice Caps- Global Warming
  • Physical Weathering- Erosion
  • Glaciers

Borrow Box

Dear Parents/Carers

 

Accompanying this note is information regarding Borrow Box. It is an initiative by libraries to have audio books accessible to borrow at home.

If you are a member of any Moonee Valley Library, then you and your child are able to access Borrow Box. Please read the information.

 

Borrow Box is a free app, and a great way to have children read a book along with someone who is modelling fantastic fluency, intonation, phrasing and most important of all, enjoyment when reading.

Students need a membership card and you will need to go with them to any Moonee Valley library to set up a 4 digit pin, this will allow them to make use of the Borrow Box app.

 

If your child already has a library card and a 4 digit pin, then they might like to discuss downloading the Borrow Box app at school with their classroom teacher.

Proposed Papunya visit update

Yesterday I received an email from the principal of Papunya School, NT, notifying me that he is unable to proceed with the proposed trip, due to staffing issues. (This involved a group of four students and their teachers coming to Melbourne and spending time with us here at Moonee Ponds West.) This is very disappointing as the funding for the trip had been received and all of the documentation had been approved by the Northern Territory Education Department. (And the four children were eager and excited at the prospect of coming to Melbourne and spending time with us here at MPW.)

I am so disappointed at this news but appreciate the complexities of life in remote communities and how we take for granted the ease in which we go about our lives here.

I have stressed to the principal of Papunya School that I am committed to the concept of developing an ongoing relationship with Papunya School and that I hope the second group we had planned for later in the year can still go ahead.

I would like to thank the staff and community members who had offered their support with this trip and I can assure you that I am determined to make it happen!

Sport News

FUN RUN - Sponsorship

 

We will be holding our 27th Annual Fun Run on Friday 22nd  June  (please note due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to change the date) from 9.30 to 10.30 am.  All the students & teachers will be involved and can run, jog, skip, hop, walk etc for one hour. As well as this being a healthy whole school activity, the students will be asked to collect sponsors to raise money. Students are encouraged to collect sponsors and the money raised will be spent as follows:

  • 50% kept by the school for the students to spend on classroom sports equipment & indoor games
  • 35% to a charity  - Make a Wish Foundation chosen by JSC www.makeawish.org.au
  • 15% to cover running cost

This term students in Gr 5/6 are competing in Football, Tee Ball and Netball competitions against schools in the Ascot Vale District.

We also continued our great skill development with the specialist Coaches from SEDA Basketball, who have been taking clinics at school as part of the Sport Education program.

MPW 80s Trivia Night 2018 

Last Saturday night (2nd June) we held our 80’s Trivia Night which was a huge success!

An enormous thank you to…

  • All of you who attended and got into the spirit with your enthusiasm, fun attitude, and fabulous outfits. It was amazing to see everyone embrace the fancy dress creating an impressive sight reminiscent of the 80’s decade!
  • Everyone who generously donated prizes or helped source them.
  • All who bid on the silent auction items, whether bidding prior from home or on the night!
  • All local businesses that kindly donated prizes for the event.  There are many generous stores and companies in our local area so please continue to support them as they do to us.
  • Several people in particular who helped with specifics along the way… we really appreciate your efforts and assistance!! To name a few… Anthea, Jackie, Sophie, Julie, Nicole, Jenny, Shona and Jane. 
  • Sandra for all the extra work she contributed to make the night such a success and for assisting on the night.
  • Brian for helping set up and Kate for getting the AV system working for the dancing!
  • And finally, to Danielle for the many hours of her time she donated towards making this event run as smoothly as possible, especially initiating the inaugural online bidding system for the silent auction which was really well received.

Student Absences

If your child is absent from school (including illness and appointment), it is necessary to inform the  school.  This can be in the form of a telephone call, email, entering the absence through a link on the front page of our website, in writing or by advising the office or classroom teacher directly.

If your child is sick it is advisable to not send your child to school.

Before and After School Care

At MPW before and after school care is provided by Camp Australia. The service operates 7.15  - 8.45 am in the morning and  3.30 to 6.15 pm afternoons.

Lost Property

In 2017 - a significant amount of unnamed clothing and unnamed plastic containers were donated to charity each month.

 

Our lost property is managed by parent volunteers and we need your help to reduce this  workload and loss of property.

 

You can help by:

  • ensuring that all belongings are clearly marked with students' names and room numbers
  • regularly check (and encourage your child/ren to check) for their lost property
  • remember that it is the responsibility of students and families to regularly check lost property and reclaim items

When is unnamed lost property cleared and donated to charity?

  • Last Friday of every month

Where is lost property?

In the causeway at the entry to room 7 and 8 (near the toilet block, off the little adventure playground).
