Parent Teacher Interviews - Booked through Compass

End of Semester 1 Parent/Teacher interviews will held on Monday 20th June 3:40 - 7:00pm and Tuesday 21st June 3:40 - 6:00pm. Bookings with your child's teacher for these interviews can only be done through the Compass Parent Portal. Access to the bookings will be made available as of Monday 13th June.

Reports on Compass

As Semester One reports for 2016 near completi on it is a timely reminder for all parents to ensure that they take the time to save & print all of their child's reports for their own records once they are made available on Compass. This is strongly recommended, particulary for Year 6 parents as once a student has exited or completed their schooling at Ormond Primary School, parents will no longer have access to Compass to obtain them at a later date.

Semester 1 Reports will be made available to parents via Compass on Friday 17th June.

Approving Outstanding Absences on Compass

So that the most accurate data can be uploaded into your child's Semester Reports, could all parents please ensure that they approve any outstanding absences for their child on Compass by Friday 10th June.

Entering any absences directly into Compass on the day your child is away from school or ahead of time where possible is the best way to stay up to date with approving absences.

To approve or enter an absence please look for the green  + (AddNote/Approve) on you Compass Parent Portal home page or in each child's individual profile and follow the prompts.

If you have any issues or questions regarding how to do this please contact Brodie for assisstance.

Compass App

Compass now has a free app for your smart phone/tablet. This is an extremely convenient way to access and communicate information when you are on the go, particularly for entering absences.

Just go to your App Store and search for Compass School Manager.

Zac McMahon, our Multimedia Technician, and his partner Martine are now proud parents of daughter Asha. Congratulations and best wishes from all of the Ormond community.

School Staring Times

I have been concerned over recent months about the early arrival of students in the yard. Parents and students are reminded that the yard is officially supervised from 8:45 am until the bell sounds at 9 am. Many children have been arriving as early as 8:00 am. While school sports practice or before school care are both conducted at that time it is important to emphasise that staff are not able to supervise other children in the yard.

Head Lice & Infectious Outbreaks

In order to effectively manage expected outbreaks of head lice in the school I seek parent assistance through early notification. In order to get on top of outbreaks I encourage all parents to call the school if they find their children with head lice at home. This information will be treated confidentially and will help us respond quickly to avoid further spread of head lice in classrooms. Notification should also be given for infectious illnesses such as measles, chicken pox, slapped cheek, school sores, scarlet fever as these can spread quite fast and have the potential to cause serious illness to some members of the wider community.

School Council

The various School Council Sub-committees hold their scheduled meetings in the week prior to School Council. Education & Policy and Parents & Friends usually conduct their meetings of an evening while the Facilities & Environment and Finance & Operations conduct their meetings at around 8 am. The sub-committees thoroughly investigate pertinent issues and initiatives and then the report or make recommendations to School Council. The next meeting of School Council will be on Wednesday, 15th of June.

Vandalism and Loitering

Broken glass, empty cans and cigarettes are being found in the school on Monday mornings. I ask our neighbours to contact the Caulfield Police on 9524 9500 if they see any groups using the school yard for purposes other than ball games.

Police Advice

Police advise that thefts from vehicles are increasing in our area. Please take extra care with your valuables in order to deter offenders.

Artist in Residence

The ‘Alice in Wonderland’ installation is well underway. This collective work utilizes contributions from all current Ormond students and staff and it is due to be completed for the start of Term 3. Scaffolding will be brought in over the holidays so that the overhead section can be completed during the break.

Curriculum Day

Parents are reminded to plan for the upcoming Curriculum Day to be held on Friday, 15th of July. This will be a Student Free Day. Out of School Hours Care will operate on this day. Please contact OSHC or see April to book your child into the program on this day.

End of Term

The End of Term Assembly in the Hall will begin at 2:15 pm on Friday, 24th of June, with students being dismissed at 2:30pm.  Students and teachers return for the start of Term 3 on Monday, 11th of July.

Election Day Events

Ormond Primary School will be a voting place for the Federal Election to be held on Saturday, 2nd of July. A BBQ conducted by the 1st McKinnon Scouts will be held in the school grounds on that day. Please support the community on the day.

Ormond's Got Talent

Well, the big day finally arrived and the countdown began to the opening of Ormond's Got Talent at 2.00pm on Friday 3rd June. The acts were spectacular, our special guest, Luke the Magician, was awesome and our Year 6 leaders really came together to run a professional and memorable show.

All our acts rehearsed tirelessly and put on flawless performances. The winners were Lani and Sassi with a show stopping number from the current stage show "Matilda". Second place getters were Claudia, Tilde, Arden, Elly, Abby, Annabelle and  Ella with their memorable self-scripted play entitled 'Paralysis'. Third place were the graceful ballet dancers, Kate and Laura, who also choreographed their own routine. And our X Factor award went to the delightful tapping shoes of Denika.

We are already looking forward to next year's Ormond's Got Talent, as this year set the bar quite high. Congratulations to all.

Year 1 News

The last couple of weeks have been busy for Year 1 with lots of skills bring learnt.

In literacy, we continue to build reading skills through learning different strategies to practice at home. Some include using the front cover and pictures of the story to predict text specific words, also they know to look for words within words to assist sounding out of unknowns words. For example ‘listening’ has the word list and ten inside it.

In mathematics, we have continued the exploration of multiplication and are now also learning about division. In its simplest form division is taught as ‘shared between’, for example 10 items shared between 2 people is 5 each. We have also been looking at the concept of the chance of an event occurring. We have discussed language including certain, impossible, likely and unlikely.

In inquiry we have discovered many ideas on light and sound, for the next few weeks we will be experimenting with materials that change when heated or cooled. Prepare for a lot of exciting finds!

Year 4 News

In  Year 4 our Inquiry topic has been rainforests around the world. We have been learning the layers of the rainforest. They are, the forest floor, the understory, the canopy and the highest is the emergent layer. We have been trying to answer a question about whether an old tree has to die for a new tree to grow. We have been growing some bean sprouts for about 7 days and testing if less light makes a difference to it growing. We also made our classroom into a rainforest as a group and found lots of different rainforests around the world. It's been really fun and we have learnt a lot.

Bike Education Year 4 - 6

We have organised Giant Superstore to come in and do bike checks for years 4, 5 and 6 over the next 2 weeks.  It is essential that your child’s bike is at school for their year level to be checked and then serviced if necessary. Students will not be allowed to ride their bike in the program if they are not roadworthy in any shape or form. No exceptions.

Each child will be given a check list that will be named and attached to their bikes for the bike checks. This check list will be completed by the store and anything that they deem requires attention must be fixed before the program begins.

Below are the dates each year level are required to bring their bikes to school for the checks.

  • Year 4  -  Thursday 16th June.
  • Year 6  -  Monday 20th June.
  • Year 5  -  Wednesday 22nd June.

If it is deemed your child’s bike requires servicing or replacement parts, Giant Superstore have organised special servicing prices for Ormond students. If bikes are not in working order at the beginning of each year levels programs in Term 3, your child will not be able to participate until problems are tended to.
