Dear Families,

The date for Easter changes each year as it is the first Sunday after the full moon following the vernal equinox on 21 March. Therefore the date falls sometime between 22 March and 25 April and this year it is Sunday 12 April. The season of Lent consists of the 40 days, not including Sundays, before Easter. The word Lent is derived from the  Germanic root for ‘long’ because it is observed in Spring (in the Northern hemisphere) when the days get longer. Lent is a time to prepare for the holiest time of the Christian year by fasting, prayer, almsgiving, and other acts of penance.

Many people give up something for Lent (a food, watching TV, etc.) or do something to bring them closer to God such as daily devotions or charitable donations. The church colour for most of Lent is purple  which symbolises repentance as well as royalty.  Lent is seen as an opportunity to give to others, to put others first and to engage in acts of kindness.

SCHOOL ADVISORY BOARD

While the provision of a school environment that supports the Catholic ethos is largely the responsibility of the Parish Priest, Principal and school staff, school boards play a significant role in supporting the spiritual and educational welfare of students. They do this through their contribution to the development of school plans and policies and their participation in activities that uphold the mission of Catholic education as expressed in the vision of the school. In realising this vision the School Advisory Board aims to:

  • act as a forum for discussion on matters concerning education in the school
  • support the provision of Catholic education in the parish by providing a link to the school community
  • promote the role of community in the life of the school.

The specific functions of the Board include:

  • promoting and supporting the Catholic ethos of the school
  • involvement in policy review and development
  • contributing to setting objectives for the school year
  • engaging in local promotion of the school
  • communicating with parents and the school’s parent groups

The next planned meeting, the AGM (Annual General Meeting), is scheduled for Wednesday 18 March. At the AGM, some members will deliver an annual report. The AGM normally provides the opportunity for
some current members to stand down while enabling new members to join.  Interested parents can nominate by filling in the electronic nomination form below. There are vacancies on the School Advisory Board and we are looking for at least 2 parents to join the School Advisory Board.  Meetings begin at 7:00pm and the dates are on our school calendar, please consider joining if you can.  CLICK HERE to be taken to the nomination form.

For more information contact myself or a current member of the School Advisory Board: Sally Zylinski (Chairperson), Cara Kirby (Secretary), Troy Czaja, Mariske deWit or Mary Larkin.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE UPDATE

Earlier this week each family was sent an update on the current situation with our OSHCare services conducted by Youth leadership Victoria.  Unfortunately our student numbers in After School Care have fallen this year and this is affecting the ability of YLV to run an effective program.   I have a further update:

As of Monday 2 March Youth Leadership Victoria will run After School Care Monday-Friday from 3.15-6.15pm.  There is no Before School Care for the time being.

The numbers in our service will be closely monitored by YLV, as well "The Department" to ascertain the viability moving forward.  The reason we are being monitored is that the government provides rebates for child care as well as wages etc to run the program.  We really need our families to back the service!  So I implore our families, if you are even slightly considering After School care, please enrol and book in.  I will keep everyone updated on the status of our program when information comes to hand.

2020 Student Residential Address (SES) Data Collection

The Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) requests the cooperation of schools in submitting the Student Residential Address and Other Information Collection (SES) data.
The information collected will be used by the Australian Government to assess school communities’ capacity to contribute towards the recurrent costs of schooling in order to move towards a fairer, needs based funding model for non-government schools.

Please click the attachment below for more information.

School Closure Day

Our Term 1 School Closure Day is on Friday 6 March.  There is no school for students on Friday 6 March.  Staff will be engaged in professional learning around intervention and updating our anaphylaxis training.

Secondary School Success!

Past families from St Paul's regularly update us with the success stories of our former students.  I actively encourage this as it is important for us a school community to get that important feedback.

Emily Tyquin, along with her siblings William and Annabella, attended St Paul's and finished at the end of 2017.  Emily was awarded the 2019 Year 8 Scholastica Award at Mater Christi which is for excellence across all subjects (only 12 in her year level).  Further to this Emily was awarded the 2019 Academic Excellence Award which she received for 5 subjects (all this while missing 3 afternoons per week & over 20 hours dance training per week!).

Melissa and Paul, Emily's parents, reported that, "She really benefited from her time at St Paul's, giving her a solid base of organisational skills, resilience and learning platforms. The individualised focus of teachers and school leaders at St Paul's was absolutely wonderful!"

I thank Paul and Melissa for letting us know of Emily's achievements, and if you know of any St Paul's Alumni that are doing great things in the world, please let us know!

AFL Footy is not far away!

Brad Trinnick has once again kindly set up an online 'friendly' St Paul's Footy tipping Comp for the AFL season.  Get amongst it!

Good luck and GO SAINTS!

Fitness Friday Walk to School

Fee Support for Families

Do you have a valid Concession Card or Health Care Card (HCC)?

If so, you could be entitled to financial support in the form of:

1.  Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF)

The CSEF is a state government funded scheme to assist eligible families with payments for their child’s camps, sports, and excursion activities run by their school. To be eligible, parents must hold a valid means-tested concession card, see further information on the flyer below.

  • Families who received CSEF support in 2019 do not need to re-apply as the application will remain active for 2020.  However, if you have an additional student who has commenced school this year, you will need to contact the office to add them to your application.
  • If you have not received CSEF support in the past and are unsure as to whether you qualify please contact the school office to discuss eligibility and/or to request an Application form.

2.  Health Care Card Holder Discounts

Please note holders of valid and current Australian Government Health Care/Concession Cards may also be eligible for fee relief of $500 towards school fees/levies for the current year.  If you have any queries or feel you may be eligible, please contact the school office.

The Catholic System also provides additional funding to the school, per eligible child. The funds for this additional support are provided by Catholic Education Melbourne and can be used to provide a portion of additional fee relief for eligible families.
