Principal's Report

We have all enjoyed another exciting, productive fortnight at Syndal South.

A huge thank you to all our wonderful families who attended the ‘whole school working bees’ over Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June. We had a higher than expected attendance which is always a great bonus with so many things on the list to be done.

Congratulations to our Aerobics Team who competed in the Victorian Aerobics Championships in Geelong. It was exciting to witness that the extreme dedication and hours of practice by all involved was duly rewarded by the results achieved over the day. We wish them all the best for the upcoming National Championships in August.

Sheer fitness and resilience have seen Alexa, Markas, and Tharul move through to the Regional Cross Country competition in a couple of weeks time. Congratulations to these superstars!

Yesterday, we had a fabulous rollup for our first ‘Launch Into Learning’ session. This is where we invite future 2020 students to come and experience what our great school offers.

Harmony Day

Congratulations to our ‘Student Voice’ representatives across the school who competently executed an engaging set of activities for all students to enjoy last Friday. It was wonderful to see students wearing a national costume or the colour ‘orange’ to recognise the importance of living in a harmonious society.

Planning Week

Next week the students will experience a slight change to their normal routine. We have planning week when teams of teachers are released from their classrooms for one day to plan together in readiness for Term Three. The classes are taken by our specialist team for this day.

Parent/Teacher Partnership Meetings

Parent-teacher interviews will be held on Wednesday 26th June. The interview will once again be booked online via the Compass Parent Portal. The booking system will open tomorrow (Friday 14th June) and close at 4 pm on Monday 24th June. Please look out for a Compass alert during the day to let you know when the booking system is open.

Some specialist teachers will be available for some periods of time over the evening but not at all times. Please note that we would not normally expect parents to meet with specialist teachers unless there was a specific concern that needed to be discussed. If you would like to meet a specific teacher please contact them to arrange a suitable, mutually agreed time.

A reminder that interviews are scheduled for 10 minutes duration only. Please help to support our families by ensuring you are on time for interviews and finishing within the allocated 10 minutes. If you need more time to discuss any particular issue with your child’s teacher, please indicate this to them prior to the interview finishing, so that you can both arrange a suitable time for a follow-up conversation.

The purpose of the meeting/interview is:

  1. To give parents the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress so far this year.
  2. To exchange any relevant information that parents/teachers feel is pertinent to their child’s future learning goals.
  3. For teachers to discuss any general issues that have arisen since the start of the year.

From approximately 12.00 pm on Friday 21st  June, you will be able to access your child’s Semester 1 reports from our Compass Portal. Once logged in, you will be able to download a pdf copy of the report, and save it or print it for your records. If you misplace your report in the future, you can simply login to the Compass Portal and download it again, whilst your child is enrolled at SSPS.

Compass is a web-based system that is accessible on any modern web browser or by using the ‘Compass School Manager’ app available for iOS or Android. If you have a smartphone, we encourage you to download the app, as this will allow both parents/carers to receive ‘push’ notifications on your device. Please note that some features of the portal are only available by logging in via the website. If you are experiencing problems accessing your child’s report via the app, then please try to access it on a desktop or laptop computer instead, as sometimes the app doesn’t work.

To access our Parent Portal, go to

To login to the site, you will need your family’s username and password. If you have misplaced these details, please contact the office, who can reissue you with a new password.

Once you have logged in navigate to the reports section of your child’s student profile page (see instructions below).

Fundraising News

You would have received notification this week of the Bunnings Community BBQ that we have allocated on Saturday 22nd June at our local Notting Hill Bunnings in Ferntree Gully Road. This is a great opportunity for us to raise a considerable amount of money for our school.

It is extremely important that we have enough volunteers to manage the BBQ over the day, please if you haven’t already done so sign up for a session.

School Council

On behalf of School Council, we signed off on the 2018 Annual Report earlier this year. At our next council meeting on the 25th June, we invite any parents who would like clarity on items specific to the 2018 Annual Report to attend the first 15 minutes of the meeting (7.30 – 7.45pm), prior to council proceeding with our standard agenda. A copy of the 2018 Annual Report is now available on Compass under Community/School Documentation.

International Food Night

On Monday night the Parents' Association is holding their first dinner night for the year. Families are encouraged to bring a plate to share of their own special cultural food.

A note has gone out to all families today with more information about this special occasion.

School Wide Positive Behaviour (SWPB)

Our focus the past couple of weeks as part of our School Wide Positive Behaviours as you would know, has been on the value of Respect. In particular showing respect by initiating greetings. I have been overwhelmed by our student’s response to this, they have been amazing!

Finally, all the best to our SSPS Socceroos who head off to the SDSSA Soccer Round Robin tomorrow. GO SYNDAL!

Child Safe Standards

If you are a parent and have not had a chance to complete an Occupational Health and Safety induction which also covers the child safe standards at our school, you may wonder “What are the child safe standards and how are they relevant to Syndal South Primary school?”

The  seven child safe standards are set out in Ministerial Order No. 870, which was introduced as part of the response to the report of the Parliamentary Inquiry into the handling of Child Abuse in Religious and other Non- Government Organizations (Betrayal of Trust).

Syndal South Primary School is committed to embedding a culture of child safety at our school. We have a few key messages that all parents in our community need to be aware of so that you know how we are keeping your children safe at school and how you can support us in that endeavor.

Syndal South believes everyone connected to our school can help keep children safe. We have as a school, zero tolerance for any abuse of children. We have policies and processes in place that have been ratified by School Council to protect the care, safety and welfare of children. At Syndal South Primary School we also have very clear boundaries about how adults in our school community may interact with children.

The child safe standards are extremely rigorous and go further than the child protection arrangements did in the past. For example, the child safe standards apply to school staff including volunteers and contractors, visitors and students’ family members. Keeping children safe is regarded as everyone’s responsibility and different people at our school have different roles and responsibilities for ensuring children’s safety.

As the Child Safe Officer for Syndal South, it is important that any concerns raised by parents about the safety of any of our students is directed to myself (Assistant Principal) and Helen Freeman (Principal).

I have included below an information guide titled “Protecting Children from Abuse: For parents and Carers”. I strongly recommend families read through this document so that you are aware of how you can help keep all of our students safe.
