Visual Arts and Technology Successes!

Congratulations to Olivia Basile of Year 12 who has been selected for the VCE Season of Excellence in Top Designs. Olivia’s work focused on a Library Design comprising a folio of design plans, work briefs, client feedback and evaluation. The Top Designs 2017 exhibition will be officially launched on Friday 17 March 2017 at the Melbourne Museum, Carlton.

Congratulations to Harriet Murphy – Hoyle who has been nominated as a VCE Top Arts candidate. Harriet’s work is too amazing to describe fully however, picture large bamboo knitting needles used to knit a length of bright pink, thick rope as a comment on the continuum from tight to less control. Harriet’s creativity and expertise is inspirational.

Many thanks to our wonderful teacher, Harriet Turnbull, who for the third year in a row, has a student nominated for Top Arts. Last year Harriet’s student, Rosie Duffy, won the overall Top Arts Award.

The Top Arts 2017 exhibition will be officially launched at The Ian Potter Centre on Thursday 23 March.

Celebration of Senior Art and Design

The Senior Art and Design exhibition and Parent Association Art Acquisition Award ceremony took place on Tuesday 15 November. The work of our students was outstanding with the Acquisition Award awarded to by our P.A. co-President, Gailean Hammond to Harriet Murphy – Hoyle. Thank you to Roger Dunscombe, Harriet Turnbull, Fiona Storrie, Ingrida Ansons, Emma McCowan and Ollie Hull who made the event such a success.

Design and Technology Teachers Association (DATTA) Challenge

I received a very excited email from Jo Jepson last week so proud of two of her Year 11 VCE students, Lilly Oshlack and Alannah O’Farrell, who entered a design challenge for DATTA. The panel loved their work which included meeting two challenges. Firstly, to create a mood board and secondly, to re-design a contemporary version of a 1950’s or 1960’s garment. The girls have been invited to the DATTA Conference with Jo on Thursday 8th December to take part in the 3rd and final challenge. We wish them every success.

Rowing

The first rowing regatta was held last Saturday and went extremely well. Thank you to our great parents who support this fantastic program.

Junior Space Design Competition (JSDC)

Rowing News

2016 Ergathon

On Friday October 21, the MGC Rowing Club took part in the 2016 Ergathon. Starting at 9.00am on Friday and going through to 9.00am Saturday, the Juniors, Inters and Seniors kept the ergos ticking over for 24 hours straight.

As well as raising funds for the program, this event was a great opportunity for the rowers to get to know each other, to select and name our new captains, and to celebrate the upcoming season by christening our brand new boats. Thank you to the parents who helped by feeding the coaches and putting on an amazing breakfast spread, the staff who helped supervise and allowed the rowers to attend their sessions during the day, and finally, the MGC rowing coaches who donated their time and expertise for the evening.

The Ergathon was a great success, with a final fundrasing tally of $8777.40! Thank you to all of our friends and families for their generous donations.
