Final Days of 2019

We’ve reached the end of the 2019 school year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank students, staff and parents for all helping make 2019 another successful year at Merbein P-10 College.

The traditional end-of-year events have now been completed, including the Awards Presentation Evening for the whole school which was held at the Mildura Arts Centre and the Prep-Year 6 Graduation Ceremony which was held last Friday morning in the Gym.  Many thanks to our teaching and support staff for their planning and organisation of these important celebrations.  The office staff in particular provide enormous support with the preparation of reports, certificates and awards for both of these major events.

Congratulations to every student whose achievements were recognised with an award, certificate, bursary or scholarship. Thanks also to the many parents, family members and carers who attended these events to support their children.

I would also like to publically thank the many businesses, local service groups and local families who generously sponsored many of the awards.   Your support is greatly appreciated by the school and highly valued by the recipients of the awards.

On behalf of the staff, students and families at Merbein P-10 College, I wanted to congratulate both Mr Andrew Petrie and Ms Rebecca Ogden who have successfully gained new positions for next year. Andrew was successful in gaining an ongoing position at St Joseph’s College, whilst Rebecca will be transferring to Chaffey SC after successfully being appointed to an ongoing positon there. I wish them every success in the future and thank them for their contribution to the college and acknowledge the impact they have had on many of our students, staff and families over their time at Merbein P-10 College.

The process to appoint someone to the primary classroom teacher vacancy was completed on Friday. I would like to congratulate and welcome Chris Harris who was the successful applicant. Chris has taught at Ranfurly PS and Werrimul P-12 over recent years and will be taking a grade 5/6 next year at Merbein P-10. I’m sure everyone will make him feel very welcome.

Last Day of School

With an expected top temperature of 46 degrees on Friday we will be organising some quiet indoor activities for those students who are attending and all students will need to remain inside during the recess break due to the extreme weather.

All students who will be walking, riding or being picked up on Friday will be dismissed at 1:30pm. Any bus travellers will need to wait until 2:30pm to be dismissed, as this is when the first bus will arrive at Merbein P-10 College.

On the last day of term, Friday 20th December 2019, ALL SCHOOL BUS afternoon runs, EXCEPT THE NSW BUS, will commence one hour earlier than a regular school day.

Any student that would normally catch connecting buses will be required to make their own arrangements.

Wherever possible, Buslink Sunraysia staff will be happy to advise and assist.

I would like to wish students, families and staff a safe and happy Christmas/ New Year break.

Victorian Government's New Mobile Phone Policy

The Merbein P-10 College Phone Policy for 2020 outlines the way in which mobile devices will be used from the first day of school next year and beyond. (The new policy is included as an attachment with the electronic newsletter, appears on the school website and is available as a hard copy at the front office.) I strongly recommend that all families take the time to read the policy and speak with your children about the expectations for 2020. This is a ministerial order and therefore must be followed by schools across Victoria.

BYOD Portal

The school provides access to netbooks and desktop computers for all students. Students in Years 4-10 also have the option of bringing their own digital device for use at school. Our technicians will set up the device so it can be used both at school and at home. BYOD offer significant advantages for students.  They can be customised for each individual student and will operate at fast speeds. They can also be used at home for personal use.  Many families may already have a device at home that can be readily set up for use. If you decide to get a new device for your child, they can be purchased from any of the normal suppliers.   The school has also set up a parent portal with JB Hi-Fi, which gives families easy access to purchase a device that is preferred for school use.  The link for the portal is Please contact the office for the school code. This is optional for families to use and devices may be purchased from any company.

Family Payments 2020

All secondary students should have previously received the family payment schedules for 2020 along with the booklists. Primary family payments for 2020 have increased by $20 per student. This increase means that the swimming program will be completely covered by the excursion levy and there will be no need to pay any extra money for the bus for this program. Please see the attached Primary Family Payment Schedule for more information. The Parent Payments Policy and copies of all Family Payments schedules are also available on the school website.

Term 1 Dates 2020

The Merbein P-10 staff will be back at school on Tuesday, 28th January and students will start Wednesday, 29th January.

Conveyance Allowance Program

The Conveyance Allowance Program offers families in rural and regional Victoria help with the cost of transporting their children to their nearest appropriate school or campus. Students must be attending the nearest school appropriate to their year level and reside at least 4.8km from the school by the shortest practicable route to be eligible.

Eligible students can receive a conveyance allowance based on:

  • the least expensive public transport fares and/or
  • a distance based allowance when travel is by private car or private bus.

Parents applying for the allowance must complete an application form and return it to school. We will then process applications using the Student Conveyance Allowance System (SCAS).

Uniform Shop

School uniforms can be purchased from the school’s main office between the hours of 8.45am and 4pm during the school week.  If these hours are inconvenient for you, please ring the school to make an alternate arrangement.

Pool Party

Because of the extreme heat this week, we have changed the time for the pool party at the Merbein pool on Thursday.  After the roll has been marked, students will catch a bus to the pool and return at approximately 11.30.  A decision about the return time will be made based on the temperature at the time.  Please ensure your child has had sunscreen applied before school.  It will be re-applied again at the pool.  Students will need to bring water, hat, bathers, towel and sunscreen. Lunch will now be at school so the canteen will be available for the last time in 2019.

Your child will have received a permission note already and all permission notes will need to be returned by Wednesday so that we can organise bus numbers.  Students without permission notes will remain at school. We are not able to accept text messages for permission.  Please sign and return ASAP.  Please refer to the original note for all that your child requires on the day.
