Principal's report

Grade 3/4 CAMP

On Monday, 150 very excited Grade 3 and 4 students boarded three coaches and departed for their three-day adventure camp at Campaspe Downs near Kyneton. All of the activities were conducted by the Campaspe Downs camp staff and were supervised by our own enthusiastic teachers from MPW. I heard from the children that many of the teachers were brave and adventurous enough to have a go at some of the activities including the flying fox, giant swing and archery where some were even successful in striking a bullseye. I heard from the teachers that the students displayed excellent behaviour throughout the camp including supporting each other and encouraging their peers to ‘have a go’ even when the challenges were outside their comfort zone, a wonderful opportunity to build resilience.  A big thankyou to all of the staff who attended the camp and to the students for being so positive and encouraging of each other.

Thank you also to the parents who attended  camp. I was very pleased to receive the following comment from one of them: ‘It was amazing to see the connection between our MPW children and their teachers on camp. All of the teachers encouraged an adventurous spirit and the children really enjoyed their extra independence …’

Junior School Council

I have been very impressed with the work that has been done by our JSC and the teachers who have been supporting them in preparing for the JSC Mother’s Day stall. I’m sure that all of their hard work and organisation will pay off with a very successful stall today. If you are one of the lucky recipients of one of these special gifts on Sunday, I hope that you feel appreciated, proud of your child[ren] and much loved.

 Civics & Citizenship at MPW

On Monday of this week I had the privilege of attending my first MPW assembly. Although we had problems with the technology and had to manage ‘unpluged’, I was so impressed with the way the children ran the assembly themselves and especially with the singing of two versus of the Australian National Anthem. All of the children at my own school Iramoo PS, sing two versus of the National Anthem every Monday morning but I have not been aware of other primary schools where this is done.

This week our Grade 6 flag monitors have flown the Torres Strait Islander flag alongside thenational flag at the front of our school for the first time. This beautiful blue, green and white flag was recognised by the Australian government in 1995 with the Australian Aboriginal flag as an official ‘flag of Australia’ and it is really pleasing to see our children become familiar with it.

Thank you

Assistant Principal Trish Viscusa, seeing eye dog puppy Jessie and I will be returning to Iramoo PS in Wyndham Vale next week. We would like to thank the community of MPW for being so welcoming and friendly towards all three of us in the past fortnight. We will remember our time with you very fondly indeed.

Reflections from students....

The Flying Fox Poem

“3, 2, 1…”

I jump.

A cold breeze slithers down my face

A laugh of enjoyment goes through my body

As I plummet down to the bark.

I still feel the cold.

Shocked and proud.

Written by Zillah (Room 8)

“Pull, pull, pull!” Dominic called as Olivia and I went higher and higher. We were half way and I got more excited as I got higher.

“Okay girls, pull the white rope down.”

We were up the top!

Olivia pulled it and down we went.

My tummy started to feel funny. We swang across the sky. Olivia started laughing and laughing.

“Shh!” I said to Olivia.

Two people pulled us on to the yellow steps and Dominic helped us off.

I felt like I wanted to do it all over again!

Written by Zarah (Room 8)

Zarah and I were on the giant swing. Kids down on the ground were pulling and pulling a rope. We went higher and higher.

“Can we stop here?” I asked.

“No, we should go to the top!” said Zarah.

We went to the top, which is 8 metres high!

“3, 2, 1.” Dominic yelled.

Then I pulled the rope and we swang straight across the sky!

I started laughing and laughing.

“Shh!” Zarah said.

As we were swinging back and forth, our tummies started feeling funny.

It was so much fun!

Reminder - Free Activity Day for Grade 5/6
Wednesday, 23rd May, 2018

F.A.D. is coming up! This is one of our favourite days of the school year – a day where our older students select from a range of great activities and create for themselves a timetable of a fantastic day of learning and fun. Students, teachers, parents, uncles, aunties, grandparents and friends are invited to plan and run an activity for small groups of students to do on the day. All that’s required is some enthusiasm and a willingness to have a go (as well as a current working with children check, if you are an adult)!

Here are just some ideas for activities from previous successful F.A.D.s: football/ hockey/ cricket clinics, cooking, tie-dyeing, drama games, trivia, drawing, karaoke, dance, organ dissection, soccer match/skills games, table tennis tournament, calligraphy, woodwork, crafts, card making, sushi/ pizza/ pasta making, construction, basketball match/drills, puppetry, science experiments, aerobics, cartooning, jewellery making, fishing, learning a new board or card game, how to set up a tent, etc.

If you’re interested in running an activity on the day, please talk to a Grade 5/6 teacher, get a form and return it to Fiona in Room 10.

If you would like to find out more about F.A.D. before committing, or if you would like some help deciding on an activity, feel free to discuss this with one of the 5/6 teachers or other parents who have been involved in previous years.

Lost Property

In 2017 - a significant amount of unnamed clothing and unnamed plastic containers were donated to charity each month.

Our lost property is managed by parent volunteers and we need your help to reduce this  workload and loss of property.

You can help by:

  • ensuring that all belongings are clearly marked with students' names and room numbers
  • regularly check (and encourage your child/ren to check) for their lost property
  • remember that it is the responsibility of students and families to regularly check lost property and reclaim items

When is unnamed lost property cleared and donated to charity?

  • Last Friday of every month

Where is lost property?

In the causeway at the entry to room 7 and 8 (near the toilet block, off the little adventure playground).
