Principal's Message

School Philosophy

Orchard Grove Primary School is committed to providing a safe, nurturing environment that engages curiosity, promotes learning, personal growth and wellbeing for all students. We strive to develop adaptability and resilience so students can become valued members of the local and global communities and be prepared for future life experiences.

Welcome back

We have had a terrific start to the school year, with so many smiling faces and enthusiastic students and staff  ready to launch into the new year. It really feels like we have all been back for weeks.  I hope you like our new iNewsletter, we are embracing technology and going for a new contemporary look and communication approach that will cater better for our multicultural community. Now, with a click of a button, our newsletter can be read in many different languages.  In addition, we have transferred to our new communication system COMPASS, which we are hoping will offer all of us a better way to communicate with each other and be informed about what is happening around the school. You will have already been receiving COMPASS alerts from us. Please make sure that we have your current email addresses, so that you don't miss out on important information. It has also been pleasing to see the students in the correct footwear for school, unless your child has special dispensation for orthopedic or medical reasons, all footwear needs to be either black, navy blue or white, or combinations of.  Please make sure that shoe laces and socks are also in these colours.

Chinese New Year

Once again we had the Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne (who are based locally in Box Hill), come to perform their amazing Lion Dance on Tuesday afternoon.  What made this particularly special, was that among the performers this year, were two former students of Orchard Grove.  Jackie and Colin were thrilled to return to the school and be part of our Chinese New Year Celebrations.  Jackie told me how he remembered that when he was at OGPS in Year 6 in 2011, he watched the Lion dance presentation  here in our courtyard and decided that when he grew up he wanted to be a lion dancer.  How wonderful, to now see him living his dream. It certainly put a smile on my face.

We would also like to acknowledge Mun and Ivy Chin (the grandparents of Scarlet in Yr 6), who once again kicked off our celebrations with a talk in The Wicking explaining all about Chinese New Year. The year of the PIG certainly looks like an exciting year ahead.

Parent Information evening and Get to Know You interviews

The Parent Information evening is a great way to hear straight from the horse's mouth what is going on in your child's class this year. We will be holding these over two nights on 18th and 19th February. Keep a look out for COMPASS alerts, that will let you know all the details.   We are always wanting to improve our communication to our school families.  So please check COMPASS, our Web site or the OFFICIAL SCHOOL Facebook site for what is happening. If you do have a problem, please contact us directly or come in to see one of the staff.  Get to Know You interviews will be held the week beginning 25th February.  Once again look out for the COMPASS alert to let you know when the portal will be open to book a time with the teacher.  This is a great opportunity to for you to talk about your child and help the teacher to get to know every student a little better.

Foundation Students

Tomorrow is the first day for our Foundation Students and the excitement is certainly building.  All the student assessments have been completed and the teachers now have a very good understanding of the skills and needs of each of the children.  Our new Year 6 School Ambassadors have been given the task of helping the new students settle in and they will be spending some time in the mornings over the next week with the foundation students in the classroom helping and playing with them, making them feel at home. As usual we will be running a 'Tissues and Tears' morning tea for our Foundation parents straight after drop off on Friday morning, this will be in the Long Room in the PAC.  As an added bonus, Team Kids our OSCH provider have organised a coffee cart for the morning.  So drop in an have a coffee and chat to the Team Kids staff before school and then our new foundation families can also enjoy a nice coffee too after they drop off their little ones.

School Student Leaders Badge Ceremony

Our Year 6 student leader badge ceremony will be held on Friday 22nd February. This will be from 9.00 - 9.40am followed by a special morning tea for our student leaders and their families.  Please come along to the ceremony and help us celebrate.  There will be no assembly at 2.30pm on this day.

This year our weekly assembly will be held on Fridays in the afternoon at 2.30pm. As usual, all parents/carers are more than welcome to attend.

Whole School House Athletics

We have our school house athletics carnival coming up on Wednesday 20th February at the Bill Sewart athletics field in Burwood.  This is always such a great day and it is lovely to see so many families come along to cheer for the children. Keep a watch out for the relevant notices and alerts regarding this event and remember to pop into the office if you need a house Tshirt for your child.

Well, that’s all from me.

Have a great weekend with your family.

Talk soon.

Glenda Harry

Student Asthma Plans

As per departmental guidelines:

Parents must provide the school with an Asthma Action Plan completed by the student’s medical practitioner.

The plan must outline the students known triggers and the emergency procedures to be taken in the event of an asthma flare-up or attack.

This information is required to ensure that we have up to date information to keep your child safe at school, on excursions and camp.

Students are required to have an asthma kit at school, held in sick by or in their school bag.

Students may be held back from attending excursions and camp if a medically signed asthma plan and medication is not provided.

Second Hand Uniform

There is an abundance of second hand stock, so we will only be accepting school dresses or any of the new style uniform (blue/jade coloured).

Personal Goods Brought to School

Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff, and visitors. This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school grounds.

DET does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.

Student Accident Insurance

Just a reminder that parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. Reasonably low cost accident insurance policies are available from commercial insurers

Library News

Information about borrowing

  • Remember to bring your library bags each week, clearly labelled with your child’s first and last name. (You do not need to have an OGPS Blue Bag, any library bag which will keep our books safe is fine.)

  • Children borrow for 2 weeks. Remind your children to return books through the RETURN SLOT in the mornings before school on their library day, or hand them to our staff at the library desk when we are open.

  • Parents are welcome to borrow and can borrow up to 10 books per visit. Sign up with our Library Staff before or after school.

Opening Hours

  • Our first ‘Night Library’ event this year will be 14th February at 3.30pm (Library Lovers’ Day).

  • The library is open before and after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8.40am - 9am, and 3.30 - 3.45pm.

  • The library is open Tuesday and Thursday lunch times (after the second bell) for students.

It takes a lot of work to keep our beautiful library organised. If you would like to volunteer please visit and let us know when you can help. We need helpers for the BOOK FAIR in May and during mornings and afternoons to tidy and return books to the shelf (15-20 minutes).

We desperately need 2 volunteers to help return borrowed books, on Wednesday mornings 8.45 - 9.30am.  If you are able to help, come and sign up at the library.

Please make sure you have completed the Parent Induction Session with Mrs King or Ms Ogilvie and have a current Working With Children Check.

Come and chat to us about Volunteering Today!

Premiers’ Reading Challenge

Information will come out soon about the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. This year you will be required to enter your books online.

Library Lover's Day
14th February - 3.30pm

This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to sign up as borrowers, take a blind date with a book to read to your child, or find out about volunteering in our school library in 2019. Did you know parents can borrow up to 10 books a fortnight, and borrow additional resources, including audio books?

Looking forward to seeing you in the Library,

Mrs. Ruth Thatcher, Mrs Costaras, Ms Mason (Library Teachers), and Mrs Krick (Library Technician)

Canteen/Uniform Shop News

Canteen is not open on the first day and last day of each Term

The Orchard Grove Primary School Canteen operates 3 days per week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

I would love to have some new parents join our friendly team of dedicated helpers. No experience is necessary. This is an excellent way to meet other parents and to be involved in the school.  Students love having Mum, Dad or grandparents coming and helping at school.

Volunteering in the Canteen involves working with myself, and 2 to 4 other parents to help prepare the lunch orders.  Your assistance would be required from 9.00am – 1.30pm for lunch duty.  Rosters can be arranged so that you can volunteer with friends, and toddlers are welcome to come along as well and play in the Community Room.

Morning tea and lunch is provided for you and your toddler.

All volunteers must have a Working with Children Check.  Forms are available at Australia Post outlets or can be done online.  There is no cost to get a WWCC.

If you are able to volunteer please contact the school office or myself on [email protected] or 0407 853 812.

I am looking forward to meeting you all.

Many thanks

Sophie Polites
