Principal's report

Tonight is Movie Night!

All funds will go toward the purchase and installation of new water bubblers .

Fundraising last year raised $20,367.64 and we are hoping that the extra $7,642.82 required to fund the installation will be raised as soon as possible. The old water troughs will be removed. New water bubblers are to be installed around the school, including a water bubbler to be located near the adventure playground adjacent the Tiger Turf.

The bubblers have the additional facility for children to fill their water bottles, come in varying heights and a variety of colors (The Green Team are in the process of consultation regarding to the colors to be chosen).

Thank you to Rachel, Anna and the Fundraising team.

Free Activity Day (F.A.D.)

The children in grades 5/6 are looking forward to our first Free Activity Day for 2017, next Tuesday (28/3)! This is another way that Moonee Ponds West celebrates the diverse variety of interests, skills and talents of our students.

On this day, children will participate in a range of great activities offered by our community, including some offered by the children themselves. Children select activities from those on offer to create a day based around their interests, and build their own timetable for the day. This is one of the highlights of our school calendar for our older students – it’s a great day!

Some activities that have been offered include:

  • a range of art and craft activities such as applique, marbling, calligraphy, card making, decorating succulent pots, street art/ graffiti drawing workshops, nature drawing by the river, Easter craft sessions, making your own earrings, finger knitting and building your own jewellery box using woodwork.
  • sports and outdoor activities, such as orienteering, table tennis, volleyball, a cricket match, netball clinics and games, ball games, Quidditch, a fitness circuit game, a soccer clinic, a riverside scavenger hunt and a Trugo competition.
  • cooking activities, including cake decorating, pizza making, chocolate cake in a mug, making healthy juices, chocolate balls, sherbet and rumballs, short bread decorating, making banana cake, rainbow cookies and making Easter chocolates
  • a whole range of other great ideas, such as making bath bombs, playing group games such as Assassin and Kahoot, completing a scavenger hunt using QR codes, a domino challenge, playing board games and a camping adventure in Jack’s Paddock.

We are very grateful for all the activities offered by our community in support of the day and hope that you are all as excited as the kids are!

If you are considering running an activity for a F.A.D. later in the year, have a look at the list above and see what different or interesting things you may be able to come up with – almost anything goes! In the past we have released homing pigeons, had dancing clinics, African drums workshops, beach volleyball – a huge range of opportunities. It’s a great opportunity to get to know the kids and to help them explore and develop a range of interests in a wide range of learning areas.

You are also welcome to drop in and have a look at how the day runs next Tuesday, we are sure you would be impressed with the independence and engagement of the students involved and it might just inspire you for our next Free Activity Day.

Thank you for all your support!

Year 7 Secondary School Expo

The annual Secondary School Expo was held in the gym on Wednesday evening. The Expo provides students and families attending State Primary Schools in the Ascot Vale and Moonee Ponds area the opportunity to meet  teachers from the surrounding State  Secondary schools. It was wonderful to see many former Moonee Ponds West Primary students now in year 7, support their new school and provide hands on information about  their experiences thus far in Secondary school.

Thank you to the many students and families who attended the Expo and a special thanks to the following schools and organisations for their participation:

  • Buckley Park Secondary College
  • Mount Alexander Secondary College
  • Essendon Keilor College (East Keilor & Niddrie)
  • Gilmore College for Girls
  • Maribyrnong Secondary College
  • Rosehill Secondary College
  • Strathmore Secondary College
  • Overnewton College

Division Swimming at St.Albans - Tuesday 21st March

Well done to our swimmers who represented Ascot Vale District at division swimming on Tuesday 21st March at St Albans.

A great achievement to qualify and some amazing individual performances on the day.

Good luck to Ella N & Elli H who will now compete at Regions next Tuesday.

A big thanks to all the parents who helped on the day.

Ride to School Day

Moonee Ponds West participated in National Ride2School Day on Friday 17th of March.

Active travel is a great way for students of all ages to meet their recommend daily dose of 60 minutes physical activity every day.

The purpose of National Ride2School Day is to show school communities that riding to school is an easy and fun activity. It is a chance to celebrate on a large scale and prove it can be done.

Bicycle Network’s National Ride2School Day is the perfect opportunity for Australian students and school communities to embrace a healthier start and to try walking and riding to school for themselves.

All students who participate in Ride2School Day have gone into the draw to win an environmental / physical activity hamper, this will be announced at our final assembly next week.  Good luck and we hope to see more of you using active travel to get to school.

Cross Country

Well done to all runners who competed in district cross country today at Aberfeldie Park.

We will have a full wrap in next week's newsletter.

We need your help!

For our programs to run we need lots of parent assistance. If you are able to assist with any of our events please see Bree and pass your Working with Children check details onto the office.

Lost Property

In 2016 - 40kg of unnamed clothing and

30 items of unnamed plastic containers were donated to charity each month.

Our lost property is managed by parent volunteers and we need your help to reduce this huge workload and loss of property.

You can help by:

  • ensuring all belongings are clearly marked with student's names and room numbers
  • regularly check (and encourage your child/ren to check) for their lost property
  • remember it is the responsibility of students and families to regularly check lost property and reclaim items

When is unnamed lost property cleared and donated to charity?

  • Last Friday of every month

Where is lost property?

In the causeway at the entry to room 7 and 8 (near the toilet block off the little adventure playground).
