The children in grades 5/6 are looking forward to our first Free Activity Day for 2017, next Tuesday (28/3)! This is another way that Moonee Ponds West celebrates the diverse variety of interests, skills and talents of our students.
On this day, children will participate in a range of great activities offered by our community, including some offered by the children themselves. Children select activities from those on offer to create a day based around their interests, and build their own timetable for the day. This is one of the highlights of our school calendar for our older students – it’s a great day!
Some activities that have been offered include:
- a range of art and craft activities such as applique, marbling, calligraphy, card making, decorating succulent pots, street art/ graffiti drawing workshops, nature drawing by the river, Easter craft sessions, making your own earrings, finger knitting and building your own jewellery box using woodwork.
- sports and outdoor activities, such as orienteering, table tennis, volleyball, a cricket match, netball clinics and games, ball games, Quidditch, a fitness circuit game, a soccer clinic, a riverside scavenger hunt and a Trugo competition.
- cooking activities, including cake decorating, pizza making, chocolate cake in a mug, making healthy juices, chocolate balls, sherbet and rumballs, short bread decorating, making banana cake, rainbow cookies and making Easter chocolates
- a whole range of other great ideas, such as making bath bombs, playing group games such as Assassin and Kahoot, completing a scavenger hunt using QR codes, a domino challenge, playing board games and a camping adventure in Jack’s Paddock.
We are very grateful for all the activities offered by our community in support of the day and hope that you are all as excited as the kids are!
If you are considering running an activity for a F.A.D. later in the year, have a look at the list above and see what different or interesting things you may be able to come up with – almost anything goes! In the past we have released homing pigeons, had dancing clinics, African drums workshops, beach volleyball – a huge range of opportunities. It’s a great opportunity to get to know the kids and to help them explore and develop a range of interests in a wide range of learning areas.
You are also welcome to drop in and have a look at how the day runs next Tuesday, we are sure you would be impressed with the independence and engagement of the students involved and it might just inspire you for our next Free Activity Day.
Thank you for all your support!
