Principal's Report

Welcome Back

I would like to extend a very warm welcome back to all members of the Syndal South community for the 2019 school year. I hope all families had an enjoyable and restful break, whether it was away or at home with family and friends. I do enjoy the break but I am always ready to return to work. The fun, joy, and satisfaction of working in a school are like no other and it is the children who make it this way.


A special welcome to all new students and their families into our school community, including our 36 Foundation students who commenced their first day of school last Thursday. As I walked between the classes after the initial goodbyes on Thursday I could not believe the way the new Foundations were so engaged, working together in small groups, listening well, working with care and being just GORGEOUS! Parents you should be very proud of your child’s start to school. They have exceeded expectations.

Congratulations to everyone for a smooth start to the 2019 school year. All students have settled in well and the 2018 Transition Program has enabled students to move to their new classrooms feeling very positive and supported.


Change to Daily Timetable

Just a reminder that this year we have made a change to the recess and lunchtime breaks to accommodate our 50-minute specialist timetable.


8.50 am Students come into their classrooms and unpack and prepare for the day.

9.00 am Classes begin

10.40 - 11.10 am Recess

12.50 – 1.50 pm Lunch

3.30 pm End of the school day.



It’s been wonderful to see the students decked out in the school uniform, especially our new Foundations. Just to clarify a couple of points, last year we decided to add a couple of new options to the uniform list  - polar fleece vest, box pleat tunic, girls tights.  We also asked for black shoes or runners to be the preferred shoe. We do understand that this may not be possible immediately but we are hoping that when parents purchase their child's next pair of school shoes, that you consider black shoes. Recently, after discussions with staff and parents, it was decided that the sport's top be available as an option to all students to wear on their sports day/s. There is a copy of the latest Uniform List attached.



Lost Property

It still continues to astound me the amount of unlabelled clothing, drink bottles, lunch boxes etc that accumulates over the week. Can you please make sure that you label all items that come to school with labels that are permanent and easily visible. Thank you for your support with this.



After a long and popular tradition of receiving a cupcake on a student’s birthday, supplied by our Parent’s Association, we are needing to change this due to the growing number of students identified as having food allergies. All students will receive a card to replace the cupcake, and of course will be individually acknowledged at Assembly where we sing Happy Birthday. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents over the years who have supplied cupcakes, a fantastic effort and hugely appreciated.


Welcome Gathering

This year weather permitting we are having a welcome gathering for the whole school on Friday 15 February at the Oval starting at 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner with a picnic rug, chairs etc. Sausages in bread and drinks will be available for purchase. The staff are organising some fun activities that will commence at 6.30 pm. I am looking forward to catching up with you all.


School Council Membership 2019

Becoming a School Council member is an excellent way to become involved in our school. Much of the work of school council is achieved through the subcommittees of Facilities and Fundraising. School Council currently meets twice per term on a Tuesdays at 7.00 pm.


School Council Elections

The Notice of Election and call for nominations for School Council is attached to this newsletter and is also displayed in the Office. Interested members of the Syndal South PS community are asked to consider nominating for vacancies on school council for the next two-year period.

Self-nomination forms are available from the Office. These must be lodged and placed in the nomination box by 4.00 pm on Thursday 14 February. In nominating for school council elections, this may be via self-nomination or approaching someone in your category of nomination to nominate you. In the event an election is required it will be conducted from Thursday 21 February with the ballot closing 4.00 pm Thursday 28 February2019.


The current term of School Council ends for the following members: Mark Bahr, Sandy Delaney, Lisa Macdermott, Dyson Baker (parents) Rebecca Stonehouse-Melke, Alana Aiello (DET).


Continuing members who still have one year to serve on school council are: Maulik Shah, Raja Ravi, Aaron Sudholz (parents) Kate Simpson, Helen Freeman (DET).


There will be two casual vacancies created by the resignation of Peter Roach (parent) due to increased work commitments and Kayleigh Atkinson (DET) due to change of workplace.


I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 2018 School Council members for their commitment to SSPS. Your time and valuable contributions have been very much appreciated.


If you are interested in becoming a School Councillor but are not sure of the commitment or what is required, please speak to a current member of School Council listed above or to me personally. Retiring members may also renominate for election.


Finally, exciting news over the holidays, we were able to have the toilets, the breezeways, the Music Shack, First Aid Room and two classrooms painted and four classrooms re carpeted, plus we purchased new tables and chairs for all classrooms from Foundation to Year 4. These improvements were only made possible from locally raised funds by our wonderful school community.

Parent Volunteers

If you are a parent, grandparent, guardian who has a few spare hours available during your busy week we would love you to come and help at Syndal South in 2019.


There are many different ways in which parents can help at our school.

We have had parents in past years who have in classrooms:

- supported students with their reading by listening to students read their take home books.

- worked with small reading groups to help students with their reading tasks.

- played Maths games with small groups of students.

- supported the Japanese teacher during Japanese lessons.

- supervised PMP activities in the hall to help the PE teacher.

- walked with the teacher and the class to the local swimming pool.

- accompanied the class on excursions to Melbourne attractions such as: The Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks, The National Art Gallery.

- attended School camps.


We have had parents who have joined the Parents Association and have:

- given students icy poles on Sports Day.

- helped organise special morning teas for our families in the school.

- provided meals for families in need within our school community.

- managed the sale of uniforms in the Second Hand uniform shop.

- supported the morning tea for Grandparent's day.

- coordinated Mother's Day and Father's day events.

- organised Curry Nights and Desert nights for our families.


Sometimes participating in day events is difficult for our working parents so there are opportunities to:

- join School Council and attend twice a term evening meetings and  learn and support further in an in-depth capacity, the management and organisation of a Primary School.

- join a School Council subcommittee and help with activities such as Election day BBQ's, Grounds Working Bees, policy development.

- provide support to the School Camp Outs on the oval.


As a parent, helping in the school provides opportunities to meet new parents, establish close friendships and the main purpose  is to support the wonderful children at this school.


If you would like to get involved in the school and are not sure how to start, please speak to either your child's class teacher, Helen Freeman (Principal), or a parent who is currently involved in the community.


Just a reminder that Syndal South abides by the Child Safe Standards so if you wish to help in the school you need to have a current Working with Children's Card and need to complete an Occupational Health and Safety Induction with me. The induction is current for 12 months only.


I will be starting new parent OHS induction sessions for parents next week - Monday 11th February at 9.30am - (After assembly) and Wednesday 13th February at 9am.


Please remember to bring your Working with Children's card to the induction.


If those dates do not suit, please see me at the office and I can arrange an alternative time.


I will be looking forward to seeing you at the Inductions.

Financial Support Options

CSEF – Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund

Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or are temporary foster parents are eligible to apply. Each family receives $125 per year paid for eligible primary school ​students.


Payments are made directly to the school and are tied to the student.

Application forms are available at the office.


Please note: If you applied in 2018 your application will carry over to 2019. You do not need to submit a new application unless your circumstances have changed.

Our First Science Class



From the Library

Welcome to Library for 2019! This year I'm in the library on FRIDAY. Students, parents and families are welcome to come in to read, borrow, visit or speak to me on Fridays after school each week. *Note: students without a parent/guardian may only stay until 3.45pm.


Scholastic LOOP Bookclub is happening again at Syndal South this year and the Issue 1 catalogue is now available online, in the library and was also sent home with all students last week.


At Syndal South we only accept ONLINE orders due Friday 15th February. Syndal South receives reward points for each book sale and these rewards are then used to acquire new books for the school library, so please consider buying books from LOOP to support  the library. 


Volunteers - the Library always needs volunteer parents to assist with contact covering new books. If you would like to help but can only work from home and have experience with contact covering books your assistance would be greatly appreciated! Please come and see me in the library or email me at .

OSHC news

A reminder to all  families to take the time to read the Parent Handbook and policies relating to the Program. These are located at the Parent Desk within the OSHC room. The Parent Handbook gives an overview of the Program and details information such as fees, our cancellation policy,  booking arrangements and invoicing procedures.


For those new to the Program please take the time to introduce yourself to all of our educators.

Second Hand Uniform

Our second hand uniform shop is run by volunteer parents and is open monthly on the 1st Thursday of the month from 9.00 to 10.00am . It is located next to the OSHC rooms.


Please note: payments are now cash only. 


Our uniform is available at the PSW store in Mt Waverley.  Please see attached forms for further details.
