Pride in our school
One of our key pieces of work for 2018 is to build the pride that our students and families have in our school.  Our Harmony Day assembly on Friday 23rd March was an excellent example of the pride that exists at McGuire College.  However, as a school we want to move to this being the case all of the time and not just some of the time.  Unfortunately over the last month we have had a spate of vandalism and destruction around the College both within the school day and after hours.  The school has many improvement initiatives planned to grow and develop this pride, including some physical changes such as the replacement of lockers and the development of outdoor seating areas for students.

Students and parents are reminded of our REAL values of Respect, Environment, Accountability and Learning.   Our staff are actively looking to recognise and reinforce students displaying our College values and the associated behaviours.  Our first two values and the behaviours we are asking students to demonstrate are:

This will be evident when students:

  • Use their manners
  • Are kind and inclusive
  • Accept and respect differences
  • Care for everyone’s belongings
  • Listen and follow directions.

This will be evident when students:

  • Keep themselves and others safe
  • Respect other people’s right to enjoy a calm and orderly school
  • Keep the school clean and tidy
  • Promote McGuire College in a positive light

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher Interviews for Term 1 are nearly upon us, with next Wednesday afternoon from 4pm to 7pm and Thursday from 10am to 1pm being dedicated to this purpose.  All parents are able to book an appointment time with their child’s teacher via our school Xuno portal at  Further details and instructions are attached for logging on and these can also be found on the College website.

Please note that students are encouraged to attend the scheduled interview time with their parents and that there will be no school for students on Thursday 29th March.

Whilst logging on to our Xuno Portal to book a parent teacher interview, parents are encouraged to also download or print their son or daughter’s SPA Cycle 1 report, which is now available.

Student Attendance

Congratulations to our Year 12 class of 2018 who have maintained an attendance rate above 90% throughout March.  This is a fantastic achievement and will certainly support you in making the most of your final year at McGuire College.

Students in Year 7 and 11 are not far off reaching our minimum expectation of 90% attendance.

Remember, every day counts and every day puts you one day closer to a successful pathway through and beyond school, be that an apprenticeship, TAFE, university or work.

Staffing News

It gives me great pleasure to welcome several new staff members to the College this fortnight as we expand our team to support the growing numbers here at McGuire College.

Welcome to:

  • Nicole Roberts – Nicole has re-joined our team as Sarah Robertson has taken maternity and family leave.
  • Marissa Pelaez – Marissa has joined us as a teacher and is working with a Year 8 English class and providing literacy and numeracy supports to Year 7 & 8 students.
  • Gabby McKindley – Gabby has joined our Student Wellbeing, Engagement and Agency Team as an Education Support Officer and will also be spending some time supporting our Year 7-9 Team.

Upcoming Building Works

The upcoming term break will see works commence around the College on some maintenance upgrades and the refurbishment of an existing classroom to a brand new Food Technology room.  The works will also see the replacement of roofing on A Wing and part of B Wing.  Visitors to the College over the holiday break are asked to walk around any areas blocked off for construction.  As we head in to Term 2, the works will continue, with minimal disruption to student programs.

Kind regards

Brad Moyle

Music News

On Tuesday 6th March,  11 of our woodwind players enjoyed an exceptional concert and Workshop presented by Yarra Brass at the Shepparton High School Music Centre.

Yarra Brass were led by McGuire past student Simon Baldwin and first presented a very interesting concert on Jazz, which included lots of played examples. Most of our players are joining the Jazz Ensemble this year and followed every note!

We were then joined by 2 students from Wanganui Park HS and 2 from Shepparton High School in a Workshop, rehearsing a Jazz medley with Yarra Brass players. This was challenging music – Angelina managed to read the bass clef part on flute, and Maria also read a trombone part on the alto sax! What a great effort. In addition, Paige and Alex were quite determined to learn the difficult first trumpet part – lots of high notes! Well done.

The Concert and workshop were both outstanding musical experiences for our McGuire musicians, and we are hoping to see Yarra Brass again this year.

The Region Music Camp is on next week– Monday, 26 to Wednesday, March 28. The Camp is held at Beechworth and will be attended by 15 McGuire students and Ms Ryan as tutor. Students will take the bus on Monday morning departing from Shepparton High, Feshti Street – the time to be confirmed. Ten of our students are attending with the financial assistance of the Fairley Foundation- congratulations to them and thanks to the Foundation. It promises to be full of learning and fun.

Please contact me at the College if you have any queries about the camp.

All Instrumental Music students have made a great start back to the year.

Senior students have been practising their new repertoire for the Jazz Ensemble. They have also been very helpful in mentoring some of the new

 Year 7 instrumental music students.

There are still trumpets, trombones and one alto sax available to learn.

Any student interested in taking up one of these instruments come over to the Music room any recess or lunchtime.

Ensembles this year will be

Jazz Ensemble -  senior students- after school rehearsal from Term 2

Marimba Mojo Ensemble – open to all – lunchtime rehearsal

Occasional Singers – open to all – lunchtime

Junior Band – lunchtime – commences in term 2

Students are charged a $200 Instrumental Music fee, which covers the supply of instruments, all music, festivals, bus trips etc. Fees may be paid in instalments. Please contact the school office or Ms Ryan if you need further information or help with school fees.

Yours on song!

Ms Ryan
