Principal's Post

We had a magnificent Mothers' Day Breakfast on Friday morning. It was great to see so many students enjoying breaky with their mum; a superb community event!

Mr Flintoff even brought his mum along too!!

A few lucky mums won one of our lucky door prizes.

Thank you to Gary Johnson and all of the dads and granddads he organised to come along to cook,  prepare and serve the breakfast. Thanks also to the staff who helped out and to Carmel Foster who coordinated the entire event.

Thanks to Angela Bruni and the many mums who helped her with the Mothers' Day stall too.

The Parents and Friends' Raffle was a success so thanks to all families who purchased tickets. Winners were: Mel Cleven (twice), Poppy Skerry,  Compton family and Ivy Vienna.

Save the Date: Parish Mission Week, 26 - 30 May

• Do you want to know more about Family life and issues that confront us today?

• Have you wondered how our Christian faith helps us find meaning in the experience of suffering?

• How is faith passed on to our children and grandchildren?
• How do we pray and what forms of prayer are available to us?
• What part does Eucharist play in our lives as a faith community?

Take time out to attend one of the morning or evening sessions and explore these questions.

Look for specific dates and times in the Education in Faith section of the newsletter

Education in Faith

Family Week

This week is National Family Week and celebrates the importance of families. It acknowledges that as family, we are there for one another, and we should make the most of family life. We are reminded that 'growing up within a family, we develop from complete dependence on others to, ideally, being dependable for others.' (CatholicCare)

You care for us with never ending love.

We praise and thank you for your invitation to be part of Your family.

You sent us Jesus to show us how to love others.

We thank you for our mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters.

May the Lord teach us to be caring for those we call our family.

Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so we can be caring and kind.

Help us to be good friends of Jesus.

Amen. (CatholicCare, 2019)

STEMMs Update

The start of Term 2 has seen the commencement of our Cybersafety units.  Students from Prep-6 use a range of websites and resources to develop their Cybersafety skills and we are delighted to join the Alannah and Madeleine Foundation by participating in their brand new Junior Digital License with our Year 2 students.  (Year 6 have already commenced the Senior Digital License.)  Resources for other year levels have been outlined in the Specialist overviews that were sent home last week.

There are links to all our resources on the STEMMS site that can be found by clicking the little blue robot on the Student Landing Page.  Students are encouraged to play the games again and complete activities at home at any time to reinforce concepts.

We are extremely fortunate at St James to have a broad range of robotic devices, so that students experience a variety of coding programs. Students are currently using Bluebots, Spheros and Dash.  Our Year 1s will meet Cubetto this week and Year 6s will be programming drones soon.  Whilst it is heaps of fun for everyone, there is plenty of mathematical thinking and problem-solving required to control each robotic device.  Words don't do justice to the student engagement, but the following pictures give you a good idea!

Our Year 5 & 6 students have just completed an introductory unit on 3D printing.  We used a free website called Tinkercad and worked through 3D design principles and the students created a range of 3D models; some were extremely detailed!  It was a steep learning curve for everyone when it came to the actual printing (including Wendy) but we learnt together and managed to get a variety of designs to print.

Congratulations to the following students who received a Student of the Week award recently.

Chook Yard Update:

Lou the Handyman would have been crying if he saw our chook fence last week.  Unfortunately, an old pipe had broken right under the new fence and gate, so... the fence had to be pulled apart and the yard dug up to repair the pipe.  There was an enormous amount of water leaking out so it just had to be done!  At least the chooks will enjoy scratching through all the mud looking for worms.

Eggs are up for sale!

$5.00 per dozen.

Fresher than Coles or Woolworths!

Just put money in an envelope with your child's name and grade, and as soon as the 'girls' lay enough, they will be sent home.

Give them a try;  the Silkie eggs are  flavour-packed!!!
