Principal's Report

 

Many members of our school community will be unaware that Ken Robinson resigned as Principal of our College at the end of 2016.

 

Ken made the announcement to school staff very late in 2016 and will be taking up a role as a School Improvement & Educational Leader with the Department of Education.

 

I wish to take this opportunity to thank Ken for his hard work, commitment & leadership over the past 6 years, and to wish him well in his new role.

 

Under Ken’s leadership the school has continued to develop and improve its operation.

 

There were many highlights but the following come to mind: the introduction of a netbook program, increased resourcing of student well-being, a renewed focus on improved teaching and learning, and the announcement of a 10 million dollar building program.

The year ahead...

 

The Education Department is now proceeding to undertake a Principal Selection Process that should see a new Principal appointed in mid-May.

 

I have been appointed to once again undertake a role as Acting Principal until an ongoing appointment is made, and I am very proud to be entrusted with that responsibility. I wish to assure our school community that the school will continue to focus on its highest priorities and deliver the best learning program for our students.

 

We underwent a school review in 2016 and we will ensure that the recommendations from that review are fully implemented. As a school we have a long history as a successful education provider in the Cranbourne community.

 

Like any successful organisation, we also recognise the areas where we can improve.

 

Every staff member in the school  is committed to working to the highest of standards and achieving the best outcomes for our students. I look forward to working with  students and their parents as we aim for another successful year in 2017.

 

I believe we are a better school due to the legacy left by Ken Robinson.

We would like to congratulate the many students who were able to reach their full potential as a result of their commitment to their studies and the outstanding teaching at Cranbourne Secondary College. 

 

Linda Le, was our Dux, with an ATAR that placed her in the top 1% of students in the state.  She achieved an ATAR of 99.6.  This is an exceptional achievement. Linda  has continued the tradition as student of Mr Ross Huggard in 2016.

In fact, Cranbourne Secondary College also commends the efforts of Dajana ZUKANCIC. She has achieved a score of 42 in SERBIAN at the VSL - South East

 

Jessica Smith was our exemplary 2016 VCAL Dux. Jessica’s dedication to her studies within the classroom were second to none.

 

Despite the extensive travel burden, Jessica successfully combined her academic studies here at Cranbourne Secondary College with her Certificate II in Animal Studies at Federation Training in Warragul and undertook her Structured Workplace Learning at Dish Licker’s Animal Resort in Pearcedale.  A true dedication to further develop herself and her career pathway.

 

The Cranbourne College Community would like to wish the Class of 2016 all of the best as they begin to navigate the world beyond school and seek out opportunities that will see them travel far and wide.

Many of our VCAL students have moved into apprenticeships and some into traineeships.  Many have used their Structured Workplace Learning to secure post-secondary school employment.  Yet, others are now are studying at TAFE to build upon their achievements in their VET certificates. 

 

We wish the entire class of 2016 well and hope that they come back and visit us to tell us how they are progressing.

 

2017 Careers Team

During 2016 a comprehensive review was completed of the pathways (careers) program at Cranbourne Secondary College and as a result, the College has injected more resources into this area of student services. 

 

We will be moving into a purpose built careers area towards the end of 2017.  We are excited about the changes that have and will continue to occur during the year.

 

We also welcome a new member to the team, Kathie Jacobs.  Kathie comes to us from Skill Invest and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in both counselling students and delivering training programs.  She worked with us during 2016 and has now been appointed as a full time member of our team. 

 

If you have careers or pathways based question please phone the General Office and ask for one of the careers team members or visit the General Office and complete a referral form with specific details about the help and guidance your child needs. 

The careers team is located in V block in the office adjacent to V6 (Study Hall).  We look forward to working with your children in 2017.

KLA Update

Cranbourne Secondary College sets high expectations about student learning

 

As such, the school is committed to ensuring that every student develops the knowledge, skills, and attributes that they need to become life-long learners and productive citizens in a rapidly changing world.

 

In 2017 we are continuing with the Key Learning Activity (KLA) Program at Years 8, 9 and 10. All students in Years 8, 9 and 10 are expected to complete Key Learning Activities on time and to an appropriate standard.

 

Students in years 8, 9 and 10 will continue to have Key Learning Activities delivered in class. They will be given class time to complete the task.

 

If they do not complete and submit work in time allocated parents/guardians will receive a text message advising that a KLA is overdue to their nominated mobile number on Compass and they can log in to see which task is overdue.

 

It is important that teachers accurately authenticate student assessment and that students have equal access to their teacher during class time to complete work.

 

This highlights the importance of regular student attendance to help guarantee that key learning is not missed to achieve successful outcomes.

 

If a Key Learning Activity is deemed to be of an unsatisfactory standard, parents will receive an SMS alert and the student will be expected to complete the work to a satisfactory standard.

 

If a student is having trouble completing a KLA in the time allocated or have queries about the submission of their work, they need to see their subject teacher.

If a parent/guardian receives a text and have any questions or concerns they may contact the subject teacher.

 

This year, as we are slightly altering program, we therefore feel it is not necessary to run our afterschool redemption sessions

 

Assessment schedules will be published on the college website and at the start of each term on the Compass News Feed so parents/guardians and students can clearly see which KLAs will be delivered throughout the semester.

  

Parents/guardians and students will continue to have access to Compass to view KLA details, due dates, and submission status and we recommend that you use this tool regularly to see that status of your student’s work as well as the feedback and reporting of their tasks.

 

All interim and semester reports are available at the end of term via Compass.

Adopting a holistic model of health and wellbeing that focuses on the physical, mental, emotional and social functioning of students, as a team we provide the following services:

 

In addition to the Wellbeing Team, Cranbourne Secondary College has a Learning Support Program which supports the learning of eligible students on the Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) and the Language Support Program (LSP).

 

  • Direct services including short term counselling and triage
  • Risk assessment and crisis intervention;
  • Evidence based group interventions;
  • Case management to assist families in accessing external mental health care services when they do not have the capability to do so;
  •  Restorative practices;
  • Health promotion and early intervention activities;
  • Support of social-emotional learning activities
  • Assistance with online applications for student uniforms through State School Relief.

 

Referrals to the Wellbeing Team can be made through Compass by Year Level Coordinators. Alternatively, students can complete a self-referral at the Wellbeing office in S4.

Learning Enhancement

MEET THE TEAM FOR 2017!

 

This year, the college is offering an exciting new program.  Learning Enhancement will be running at Year 7 and 8 to support students with the increased literacy demands of secondary college study. 

 

This program is coordinated by Kelly Meikle.  The teaching team consists of: Nic Grimster, Karie Hullin, Kelly Meikle and Erica Sherlock. 

 

Students are selected for inclusion in the program based on information collected from feeder primary schools, data collected here at the college, anecdotal teacher observations and parent / student referral.

 

Once a student has been accepted into the program, their commitment will extend for a five week block.  They will be required to attend Learning Enhancement small group classes at regular times within that five week block.  At the end of the five weeks, students will be assessed to ascertain whether their literacy skills have improved. 

 

At this point, students may have acquire sufficient skill so as to no longer be included or it may be decided that the students should continue in Learning Enhancement for a further five weeks.  If no growth is evident, we will endeavour to make the required changes to support growth. 

 

This may necessitate further testing, or referral to other departments within the school.

Class Captaincy

 

Class captains make up one of the most important units of the leadership in the school.

 

If this unit is effectively managed, there will be a flow-on effect across the rest of the school. Additionally, giving each and every class representation allows all students within the school to have a voice.

 

Throughout the year a class captain will:

  • Represent their class by gathering data and providing information and suggestions to their SRC representatives
  • Attend meetings with the SRC members for their year level
  • Provide feedback to their class about SRC decisions/meeting outcomes
  • Work in close coordination with Pastoral Care teacher/Form group teacher/Classroom teachers
  • Receive leadership training
  • Provide wellbeing to the class as the need arises - this could be in the form of offering support, passing on concerns, being able to inform students of correct processes and protocols in relation to wellbeing
  • Work with teachers to develop curriculum and offer input on classroom practices
  • Organise class events in consultation with Pastoral Care/Form teacher
  • Promote class participation in school extra curricula activities or events
  • Support the SRC leaders to run whole school activities/initiatives
  • Attend meetings with the YLCs or other staff as required
  • Complete any additional tasks as requested by Student Leadership Coordinator, Year Level Coordinators, Pastoral Care/Form teacher or classroom teachers

Multipride 2017

Point Leo

 

In January 2016,  Anita Templin and  I  accompanied the MultiPride students to  Point Leo  for  our annual  event..... 

 

We talked a  great deal that  day about  how  much  that had  been achieved  with  the MultiPride  program and  how  this  day  was  a symbol of  the  diversity and cultural  bridging  that we had worked so hard to promote in  the school.

 

This  year I was accompanied  by  Annette Evans. The  2017 MultiPride  students  went  back  for a basic beach and water safety day , and a chance to  gain an appreciation of the culture and rewards of being a member of a Victorian Surf Life Saving Club.

 

We were all rewarded by the social interaction and  we developed  an understanding of each other’s history, heritage and culture.

 

As I walked along the beach taking my photos I thought about Anita and how hard she has always worked to bring about positive outcomes for all  the students she came across.

 

It was Anita Templin that had drawn me into the MultiPride concept. We were supported by the great work of Phil Start and Ken Robinson. Habib Mohammadi was also on hand to offer his guidance and leadership.

 

Going down to the beach with this group is always a great joy.

 

The excitement when we arrive at the clubrooms and then down to the beach is electric. ..! It amazes  me  the energy  these kids  have and  how  they  go about  helping each other in the  water.

 

My camera captured  a little of the understanding, compassion the laughter and the smiles.

 

That’s what  MultiPride  is....  Thank you Anita.

PROFILE: Guitar teacher
ROHAN COSTER

A former student at CSC (circa. 1981-6), this is the man who is enslaved by the rhythm...

 

Picking up the guitar back in his high school days (1982), Rohan has gone on to play around 500 gigs (including one alongside revered Rose Tattoo artist, Pete Wells!!) as well as releasing two studio albums.

 

From his recording efforts, a single launched itself and enjoyed high rotation on yesteryear music video program, Rage .

 

Not only is Coster a bonafide rock legend, he is also a true blue local lad, claiming a real affinity with the Cranbourne community.

 

Rohan is delighted to have returned to his old school yard days in order to pursue his passion for music through his masterful teaching techniques, which has seen as many as a dozen or so of his eager pupils to pursue music at a tertiary level.
