Principal's Message

Camp for our Year 3-4 Students

It was a very exciting time for our year 3-4 students as some prepared for their very first 3 day adventure at Camp Munyung, near the Mt Eliza coast. This camp site holds a very special memory for me as when I was trained, all those years ago, this camp site was used to train teachers in how to run and co-ordinate school camps and excursions. It has had quite a number of upgrades and doesn’t look anything like what I remember the last time I visited. I would like to personally thank Mr Leeden, Mrs McKenna and Mr Beal for all the planning and behind the scenes work that has taken place in order to ensure all the children were safe and had an enjoyable time away.

I also attended the camp and stayed with the children and staff, joining in all the fun activities. I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Kelly for attending, along with one of our pre-service teachers Mr Parker and two of our parents Alasdair Perry and Adam Murray. It is 24 hour duty of care and our school supports and promotes outdoor activities as part of its extra curricula programs. Another successful event. Many thanks to all for their support. Photos were sent via Konnective, a few on the schools Facebook account and a couple on the Instagram page. We will be collecting them and providing a link for parents to access any photos for their family albums.

100 Days of School for our Preps

Our gorgeous little preps have reached a milestone with achieving their first 100 days of school which we celebrated last Wednesday with a special morning tea and a number of activities in the classrooms. All parents and friends were invited to join us as we partook in a number of engaging activities using the digits “100” to celebrate. A very big thank you to Miss Ramanauskas and Miss Samuels for organising a wonderful morning.

Principals Day celebrated Monday 7th August

Last Monday Mrs Schmauder and I were surprised by the staff and children who made us feel so very special. It was Principals’ Day and they acknowledged the important role that Principals and Assistant Principals play in creating and sustaining a strong, vibrant learning community within and beyond our School. We were treated with a surprise morning tea and a beautiful bunch of flowers. Students from all the classes wrote special messages, which proudly hang in our offices. I was deeply moved by all the messages from the children and am so proud to be the Principal of Moorabbin. Thank you to all the children, our community and staff.

Happy “ES (Education Support) Staff Month”

August is Education Support month organised by schools to recognise and celebrate the
wonderful contribution and achievements of ES staff. From Business Managers, to classroom support staff, technicians and therapists all of Victoria’s ES staff play a vital role in our schools. In our school they are:

Karmen Vannutini          - Business Manager

Vicki Ormsby                    - Administration Officer

Toni Gallagher                 - Library Technician/Office Assistant/Aide

Barbara Andolfi               - Integration Aide

Kaylene Smilie                 - Office Assistant

Valerie Wills                       - Integration Aide

These incredible ladies do everything in our school from managing the office, budgets through to looking after our sick students. They are the ones who ring parents with injuries, they ensure staff are paid, assist with fundraising activities, support students in classrooms and the library and perform a multitude of important tasks that help keep our school ticking over, even down to helping with blocked drains, cleaning up sick children and showing trades people around the school. The staff and I will be hosting a special morning tea to acknowledge all the incredible tasks that they do for us.  Ladies THANK YOU!

Working with Children’s Check some Minor Changes

Working with Children Checks In accordance with new Child Safe legislation as of the 1 August, anyone volunteering to help in our school programs will now require a Working with Children Check (WWCC). If you have not yet organised your WWCC we encourage you to do so as we know that the involvement of our families and friends in school helps our children achieve the best possible learning outcomes. WWCC for volunteers are free and the process for obtaining one is very straight forward.

School Fundraising and where some of the money has been spent so far

Over the course of an academic year, School communities seek additional support from their parent communities and beyond, to help fill a gap in resource funding for extra projects that the Government does not fund. For example, a portion of the building fund has gone into replacing the new water bubblers at the front of the school. You will have noticed they are more practical, colourful and cannot be damaged like the old drinking troughs.

New toilets were installed in our school hall and I continue to have the old pipes around the school upgraded as they provide an ongoing challenge!

The Art Show raised close to $800 and this will go towards the purchase and installation of a new Kiln.

We have used some funding to purchase decodable books and resources for our students who require specific assistance with their literacy skills.

I continue to use our maintenance man once a month to ensure the school is kept safe and looking at its best at all times. There are so many odd jobs that need to be tended to and as part of my role I have to ensure everything is in working order for staff, students and our general community.

We received a $4500 grant from Rotary and Mrs Kelly has purchased 10 new Lego EV3 Mindstorms robots to be utilised this term, in Science, as part of the coding STEM program.

Still to come:

  • The last lot of monies from Moorabbin Lions Club will be spent to create a beautiful sitting wooden feature that will double up as a stage around the big oak tree, near the library.
  • At the front of the school, between the basketball courts and the main building I have commissioned the build of 6 planter boxes which will provide more gardening and kitchen garden spaces. The front entrance will be landscaped to beautify Dane road gates and our year 5-6 students are painting recycled tyres to place in between the planter boxes to continue their work in sustainability and add some amazing colour along the fence line.
  • Our Parents and friends have raised just under $20,000  and this money is being targeted for new play equipment at the front of the school to replace the old, worn wooden equipment.

As you can see we have many projects “on the go” and I can’t wait to share these when they are completed.

Insight - Not in front of the children

This is my last entry until I return from my Long service leave. I would like to wish everyone a fantastic concert and I look forward to watching the DVD. A very happy Father’s Day and all the best of luck as the school prepares for athletics and the commencement of our new “Taste of Prep” program for our 2018 preps.

I know I leave the school in good capable hands with Mrs Schmauder who will be Acting Principal and Miss Marie Manserra who will be Acting Assistant Principal along with the schools Leadership Team - Mr Stephen Leeden, Mrs Alison McKenna and Mr Ian Corrigan for the next 4 weeks. I will return on the 18th September for the last week of Term 3.  Until then I will be thinking of you all while on leave! Bon Voyage!

Moorabbin Primary TERRIFIC Fun Fair

Planning for the Moorabbin Primary Terrific Fun Fair 2018 is well under way and is shaping up to be a great day with plenty of local community groups already on board to support us in our fundraising efforts for our Outdoor Amenities Upgrade.

The Highett Youth Club, Cheltenham Scouts, Bricks for Kids and Rockabye Kids Party's are just a few who are generously giving their time to host free or gold coin donation activities on the day, with all funds raised going to the school.

There will be carnival rides and a golden ticket that allows 1 person and a friend to queue jump these rides all day so when the wristbands go on sale you have to be in it to win it!

As a school community there are many ways everyone can ensure the day is a success. Currently the Fete Team is in need of people who can assist in the organisation of;

Hair and Body Art

Food Stalls and Café

Stage and Entertainment

First Aid Tent

Competitions & Raffles
