Principal's Report

From the Principal...

Year 9, 10 & 11 students will commence their 2017 VCE or VCAL studies next week, as part of our V3 Orientation program, giving them a head start for 2017.  Year 11 students’ final day of school for 2016 will be Wednesday November 30th.  Year 10 students will be participating in Work Experience in the week beginning December 5th.   Year 9 students will be participating in a number of special activities and excursions, and the camp at Deakin University, in addition to normal classes, after the Orientation Program.   They are expected to be at school every day.

On Tuesday November 29th, we will be holding our secondary music celebration evening, beginning at 7.00 p.m.  We are expecting some very special performances from our talented students.

We are also looking forward to the Primary Concert on December 1st.   Students have been rehearsing very hard.  We can look forward to some very special performances.

Secondary Awards Night will be held on Wednesday 7th December at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong.   Letters will be sent home this week to families of students who will be receiving awards or performing.  Tickets can be purchased from the office.

Parents of students in Years 7 & 8 are reminded that hire payments for iPads for 2017 are now due.   If you have not yet made your payment, please do so as soon as possible.  Students will not be permitted to take iPads home over the school holidays if payment has not been received.

We will be holding a whole school assembly beginning at 8.45 a.m. on Tuesday November.  This will be my last opportunity to address the whole student body before I retire at the end of the year, as Year 11 students will finish school on November 30th and Year 10 students will be participating in Work Experience.  Parents are welcome to attend this assembly.

Reports will be available online via Compass for all students from Thursday December 15th.

Students will be dismissed at 12.30 p.m. on the last day of the school year, December 20th.

InterACT Program

Throughout Term 4, a group of 20 students from non-English speaking backgrounds had the opportunity to participate in a mentoring program run by ABCN (Australian Business and Community Network). The focus of the program, known as InterACT, is to support newly arrived students or those from non-English speaking backgrounds to develop communication, teamwork and employment skills, so they are better prepared for life after school.

Students were partnered with young lawyers from the Norton Rose Fulbright law firm and most of the sessions were held in the meeting rooms of their building in the city. All the participants agreed it was a resounding success, and it was evident to all staff who observed the interactions that students’ confidence grew as they formed new connections and learnt invaluable skills.

When asked about their favourite part of the program, two of the participants, Sabin Rezawi and Rami Tayab responded that they liked everything about the program – from travelling into the city and being in a luxurious, bright building to participating in activities with their friendly mentors. They both said they learnt a lot from the young lawyers and particularly enjoyed hearing about the paths they took to get to their careers. They added they would love to take part in such a program again and thank ABCN, Norton Rose Fulbright and the EAL teachers who organised the sessions.

Careers News

The 2016 Hays Quarterly Report of skills in demand was focused upon in a recent Australian Careers service update. The report outlined employment growth areas projected for next 5-10 years. Of those industries that I have highlighted in earlier newsletters the same areas of Teaching, Nursing, Analysts, Lawyers, and Accountants are all covered –to read the full report  follow this link

Helping students kickstart course and career exploration

Deakin has launched an innovative tool to assist students to research career options in a unique and engaging way.

Deakin Explore Bot (DEB) is a highly intelligent chat bot that aims to take the burden out of career research by encouraging students to ‘dip their toe’ into planning their future.

Powered through artificial intelligence, students can chat to DEB anytime, anywhere through Facebook Messenger. DEB asks students a series of fun and easy-to-answer questions, which test students’ interests and capabilities against a number of career areas. Once they’re done, they get an intuitive snapshot of their results, which will be directly linked to a list of careers to research on Explore.

Your students can find DEB by searching for Deakin Explore Bot in Facebook Messenger.

The following link has been provided from the Australian Tax Office to enable students to create their own Tax File number- which they will need throughout their life. Importantly you need one when getting a job (part time or full time) and then enrolling into Uni and TAFE courses.

The process has changed so it is important that everyone is familiar with the steps involved.

  1. Use the attached link to apply for a Tax File number (complete the form and submit on line)

  1. Book at time at Australia Post to attend an interview with proof of identity documents.
  2. This interview must be completed within 30 days of lodging your application (that you did in step 1)

If you need any extra support with this process please op in and see us in the Careers centre.

All year 10 students will collect their packs today. There is information for Parents, Students and employers. Students must ensure they ring the employers early next week to confirm their details for their weeks experience for the following week.

I need to stress that students need to take the employer pack with them on the first day- it has emergency contact details and other important information.

Students will be reminded tomorrow about expectations and have an Occupational Health and Safety reminder!

Good luck to all of the year 10 students going out …make the most of this opportunity!
