Term 1, 2017

Congratulations to all Prep students and their families on a wonderful start to 2017! Term One is always a very busy term, often proving exhausting for our students. We encourage parents to try and get their children to bed as early as possible and provide them with a hearty breakfast to get them through the morning. All of these things are important when supporting your child through their transition to school. We are all very proud of how well everyone has settled into school life and look forward to a wonderful year together.

Literacy

During Term One the Prep students have been exposed to a variety of rich literature and text. Linked to the literature, we have focused on a letter of the alphabet and the corresponding sound each week. Cued Articulation has also been incorporated, assisting children in developing the letter/sound relationship. We have commenced the Home Reading program which aims to foster a love of literature, great discussions and connections to real life experiences. Students have been using their personal experiences as a basis for their weekly Diary writing.  Children have also been invited to bring along something of interest for weekly Show and Tell sessions to assist them in developing their Speaking and Listening Skills.

Numeracy

During Term One the students have participated in hands on activities to promote number awareness. They are developing their knowledge of the number system through our weekly number focus. This in-depth understanding of each number will involves students recognising, recording and making numbers from 1 – 5. Students have been practising counting forwards and backwards using a number chart, bead frame and other concrete materials.  They have also been learning about the attributes of 2D shapes (circle, rectangle, square and triangle) and been introduced to the concepts of taller/shorter and curved and straight lines.

Term 2, 2017

It’s amazing to think how far the students have come in only one term! Term two focuses on furthering the student’s academic development now that they have settled into the daily routines of school life, with the continuation and enhancement of many of our programs. We continue with our daily exercises to get our bodies ready for learning and brains switched on for the day. Our Take Home Reading Program also progresses with the assessment of the Magic Words, the commencement of Literacy rotations, introducing the students to ‘big books’ and shared reading! A very exciting term!

Literacy

During Term 2, the Prep students will continue to establish skills in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. The children will participate in a variety of language related activities including Literature Appreciation, Whole Class Shared Reading, Author Study, Sentence Sequencing and Differentiated Big Book activities. Students will continue to share their experiences during Circle Time and use these as a basis for their weekly diary writing. Students will be encouraged to write their own words in their Diaries using their knowledge of the letter/sound relationship. Show and Tell will continue and is an opportunity for the children to further develop their ‘Speaking and Listening’ skills while making connections to our Unit of Inquiry.

Numeracy

During Term 2, the Prep students will continue to participate in hands on activities to further develop and consolidate their understanding of the Number system. The focus will be on consolidating their understanding up to 10 and then making and recording models of numbers up to 14.  They will make and compare collections and will count and form numbers using number charts. The children will use concrete materials to explore and make patterns. The children will also learn about the cycle of time including yesterday/today & tomorrow, morning/noon & night and the days of the week. They will learn informal methods of measuring items and use language such as taller and shorter to describe their findings.
