Principal's Report

We are certainly back into the swing of things this week with lots of exciting learning opportunities for students.

Last week our Year 2 students demonstrated their independence by attending their first overnight camp to Oasis Camp in Mount Evelyn. This week our Year 1 students prepare to be risk-takers as they embark upon the exciting Year 1 sleepover at school on Friday night. Teachers have organised a fantastic night of fun including tabloid sports, games, movie night and breakfast in the morning.

We would like to thank our brave staff and parent helpers for their preparation and dedication to our students and for enabling such memorable events to take place. We are sure all the students will have a blast.

Foundation 2019 Transition

This week our 2019 Foundation students will commence their formal transition program from Kindergarten to Primary School. They will be involved in a variety of learning activities in the classrooms, meeting teachers, interacting with other students and becoming familiar with the school routines and environment. This is an exciting time for them as they prepare for their start to school in 2019.

While the children are in the classrooms and specialist programs, parents are invited to a presentation about various aspects of the school including curriculum, student wellbeing, learning technologies, OSHC, school council and P&F.

New Classrooms

As you may have noticed, we have had a brand new double story portable building installed at the end of the stadium.  This is a very exciting development for the school and will provide an extra 4 classrooms in order to accommodate our students in 2019.

There is still quite a lot of work to be carried out on the classrooms before they will be ready for use, however they will definitely be ready for us to move in at the end of the year in preparation for 2019. We apologise for the inconvenience while the construction work is being done and we thank you for your understanding.

World Teachers Day and Education Support Staff Day

Friday 26 October

On this day we celebrate World Teachers Day in Australia. We are going to celebrate World Teachers Day and Education Support Staff Day together so we can acknowledge the great work of our teachers and education support staff (including classroom, office, library and learning).

This is a great opportunity for students to do something special for the teachers and education support staff. Be creative - some examples might be making a card, flowers, something students may think of themselves to give / do for teachers or Education Support staff to say thank you.

Our wonderful teachers and education support staff work very hard and are committed to providing the best learning opportunities, support and outcomes for all students. Let’s acknowledge them in special ways on this day.

2019 Class Considerations

Closing Date | Thursday 1 November

When developing individual classes each year, teachers consider a number of factors including academic ability, special skills and talents, social competencies, gender, students who work well together, those who may not work well together and friendship groupings. While the students are consulted about current friendships, it is only one of the criteria considered because building new relationships is also part of our education process and an important skill for students to develop.

The placement of students for the coming year is a complex process where teachers put great thought and sensitivity into their planning. They discuss, reflect and review their decisions over a period of time.

If students have any learning or social needs to be considered when placing them in classes for 2019, parents can write a letter addressed to the Principal stating their needs and requests for consideration. If parents have written requests in previous years, we do not retain these as students’ needs and friendships change from year to year. If the consideration from a previous year is still important, a new letter should be written.

Please note that multiple requests or requests that impact on another student’s class placement cannot be considered in the process. Parents are also not able to request specific teachers. The closing date for these considerations is Thursday 1 November. Any requests received after this date are not able to be considered.

Walk 2 School Month

Monday 8 October - Friday 2 November

We are, once again, participating in Walk 2 School Month. It would be fantastic to see as many people as possible coming to and from school by an active mode of transport. Please remember that it is also OK to be active part of the way and encourage Mum, Dad or whoever brings you to school to park a little further away and walk the rest of the way. This will also help with reducing the amount of traffic around the school at drop off and pick up times.

There will be a number of events happening during the month, please get involved in as many as possible:

  • Crazy socks day  |  every Wednesday in Oct (10,17, 24 & 31)
  • Celebration morning tea platters for each class | Friday 31 Oct
  • 10 x $30 rebel sport vouchers (students will go into the draw for these if they travel actively 10 or more times during the month)
  • 1 x Fitbit (students will go into the draw for these if they travel actively 20 or more times during the month)

Classrooms will have a recording chart up in their rooms and teachers will record students active travel each day. This data will then be use in the above prize draws.

Templestowe District Basketball Round Robin

Tuesday 16 October

Our girls and boys basketball teams participated in the Templestowe District Basketball Round Robin at Bulleen Basketball Stadium.

The teams played extremely well and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day. The girls & boys teams both placed 3rd overall, which is an outstanding effort. Many thanks must go to Mr Brad Harris for coaching the girls and Ms Kirsty Bone for coaching the boys. Also many thanks to the parents who transported the students to and from the venue.

We wish Vinceman all the best and really look forward to hearing how you go at the Nationals. Well done and Milgate is extremely proud of everything you have achieved so far.
