St James Community Calendar

(Please be aware that dates can change....always check the dates on the left for confirmation)

Principal's Post

Dear Families,

Wow! It’s hard to believe that the school year is half over and that I’ve been here at St James for two terms. So much has been achieved during term two here at St James. I am slowly getting to know students and their families and continue to be impressed with our entire community.

Saturday night’s Parents and Friends major fundraiser was far more than that. It was a brilliant community celebration. Raising money is extremely important and we certainly raised a magnificent contribution towards the new adventure playground equipment. Thank you to our Year One Champions, lead by Monique, Rachael and Michelle who organised the evening. Thank you also to our auction helpers, lead by Danielle and Jen

I will be taking the final two days of this term as part of my Long Service Leave. Carmel will be here on Thursday and Friday holding the fort as usual.

Parents and Friends Fund Raising Thermometer

You may have noticed the thermometer on the Multi Purpose Room window. The purpose of the thermometer is to inform all families of our up to date fundraising tally.  This was created by Kylie Brooks Verberne and donated by officeworks Vermont South. Thank you Kylie!

End of Semester Reports

These will be sent home in envelopes tomorrow addressed to parents. I have reminded the students that despite their eagerness and excitement, parents are the ones to open the envelopes. We have been working on this new reporting package very hard since March this year and hope that you find it meets your needs as parents. Please remember to celebrate your child's learning and achievements with them.

New Legislation - Student Attendance

Important - Late arrivals and absences:

Please remember, parents are required to contact the school to advise of an expected absence and provide an explanation by 8.45am.  At St James school, this may be done in two ways:

  • By phone (9874 1830) and leave a message on the absence line
  • via email to the office - [email protected]

Thank you to families who are following this procedure.

Child Safety Updates

Please remember that all visitors and helpers to our school are required to sign in at the office and wear a lanyard, indicating that you have signed in via the office

Please remember that all parents and visitors should sign our St James Code of Conduct

The students have been working on developing their own "Student Code of Conduct" supporting the safety, participation and wellbeing of all students.

Please discuss these behaviours with your children and what they  mean to them:

- Be Confident

- Listen

- Respect

- Safe Choices

- Look After One Another

Staffing Update

Monica DeLeo had her knee surgery last week and is recovering well. Monica is hoping to be back on deck to commence next term.

It's a Boy: Congratulations to Josh Crowe and his wife Laura on the birth of their son Henry who arrived a few weeks early on Saturday afternoon. Mum and baby are both in good health.

Soccer Pitch

Carmel and I have submitted a proposal for a community grant to construct a synthetic soccer pitch on the lower grassed (mud) area near the adventure playground. While we only have a very small chance or being successful, at least we have a chance.

Interschool Netball Finals

Last Friday our two Yr 5/6 Interschool netball teams both won their district Grand Finals. They will now progress to the Division Finals to be held next term. Congratulations to all students who played and to Miss Fitzgerald who trained and prepared the students.

Inter School Cross Country

Congratulations to James (6F) who came 46th, as St James' only representative in the in the Regional Cross Country event held at Yarra Glen last week. James possibly ran a PB and achieved his goal of finishing in the top 50 runners.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)

CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

HOW TO APPLY Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef.

Applications close Friday 29th June.

Correct School Uniform

We encourage all students to wear the correct footwear, jewellery and hair accessories. A few senior students, in particular, have been spotted setting an incorrect example to other students. We will be strictly reminding all students about this next term.

Annual Report to the School Community

Please note that the 2017 Report is available for those interested in reading it both on the website or hardcopy at the office.

Volunteer Needed

Any parents able to wash our lost property over the holidays, please see Carmel. We then transfer these clothing items to our second hand uniform shop.

Education in Faith

First Eucharist

The celebration of the Eucharist is an opportunity for us to celebrate and strengthen our identity as God's people. We gather together around the altar to share in a meal and to remember and celebrate Jesus’ life, his suffering, death and resurrection. We are also reminded that we share in Jesus’ life and calling.

During the Liturgy, the priest asks that the Holy Spirit will come upon the bread and wine and the people to sustain and encourage them to continue to live like Jesus. Knowing we need continual strength and encouragement, we are invited back regularly to participate in this celebration. This is why the Eucharist is described as the repeatable sacrament.

We congratulate the following students who celebrated the Sacrament of First Eucharist on the weekend: Ruby, Ryan. Evie and Lucas.

St James Feast Day

Wednesday 25th July marks the Feast Day of St James, our school's patron saint. Along with Peter and his brother John, James was one of Jesus' closest friends. He  witnessed Jesus' miracles and accompanied him to the Garden of Gethsemane. Following Jesus' death, James was active in spreading the Good News across Israel as well as the Roman kingdom. He travelled and spread the Word for nearly forty years in Spain.

Parents and carers are invited to gather with us for a School Mass at 9am to celebrate the life of St James and our school, and to be reminded of the ways in which we can actively live out our faith.

Following Mass, our Mini-Mission Fete will run from 11am-1pm. Our senior students are currently planning for this very special day, which will end with an Assembly at 2.30pm. More details to come next term.

Well-being

SRC

A huge thank you to our wonderful SRC reps for Semester 1. They have contributed actively to bringing the St James student voice alive in our community. Together we have celebrated Harmony Day and National Day of Action Against Bullying. They have helped to introduce the ‘Caught Being Kind’ initiative and we have reached over 500 kindness cards!!!!

In classrooms, we have also raised awareness about child safety, by completing an activity where children wrote on a hand the names of 5 trusted adults they can talk to if they are feeling unsafe.

The SRC has also developed the St James Student Code of Conduct which aims to continue to build a positive school climate where all members of the community feel safe, comfortable and accepted. This code of conduct will be reviewed and evaluated each year. Currently, the 2018 Student Code of Conduct is:

o   Be Confident

o   Listen

o   Respect

o   Safe Choices

o   Look After One Another

It's time for them to now pass the 'baton' on to our Semester 2 representatives. They will be introduced at assembly next term and presented with their badges.

Pastoral Care

St James Support Crew

Pastoral Care Team

In last fortnights newsletter you would have read about the Pastoral Care program at St James. As a reminder just as before Pastoral Care at St James is all about supporting each other. Offering a helping hand, a meal, snacks for school lunches, groceries or transport when things are tough or overwhelming. It may be there is sickness in the family, a loss or the birth of a new baby. We don’t at all need to know the reasons why but we are here to help find an answer to such questions as: How am I going to get dinners done this week? What can I pop in the lunchboxes? or How will I get the kids to school?!

We are a team of 5 who will coordinate this care and support but we need your generous help.

We have created an email group where you can sign up and be on our email list. When we identify a need those within the group will be sent an email with what support is needed, but with personal details kept confidential. Often this may mean making a meal for a family but could also be other help such as providing transport for children or picking up some groceries.

Please note if you were involved in pastoral care at St James in previous years and would like to continue we do not have your details and you will need to sign up again.

Thank you very much to those generous people who have already signed up to offer their help and support. It is greatly appreciated!

If you can help please sign up at:     [email protected]

Please also let one of us or Carmel and David know if you know of anyone in our community who could do with some care, support and prayers. We are very keen to continue to build up a community where we care and look out for each other.

Thank you for your help,

The St James Support Crew!
