Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers

Term Break.

After a very busy term the school will be closed until Tuesday, 23rd July. Staff will return on the Monday to undertake a series of professional development activities.

P&C Event.

Congratulations to our P&C for putting together another successful Quiz Night last Saturday and to the school community for supporting the event at the Hilton Sporting Club. Niki and the committee consisting of a large group of volunteers put together a great event.

There has been a number of students with Flu symptoms this term and one who has had Influenza A.  Please contact your GP if flu symptoms persist at home. At school we will continue to reinforce the need for personal hygiene and washing hands.

Parent Interviews.

Thank you for your support of the recent Parent interviews opportunity. This event enables staff to catch up with parents before the Semester One reports go home.

White Gum Has Talent.

Our students enjoyed a wonderful ‘White Gum Has Talent’ final this week. There were auditions over the last two weeks which culminated in three groups of 4 from across the school presenting to the school community. Their creativeness and confidence was fantastic. They all engaged with the audience and they with them. Winners were chosen by a clapping meter but it was great to see how supportive our students were for each other.  Thank you to Mrs John and Mr Kaloczy for organising this initiative and to all of our students who may have auditioned.  We certainly do have a lot of talent in our school!

Gwyneth Ewens Awards.

Last night I joined Ms Henderson and many families whose children volunteered to enter the  2019 Gwyneth Ewens Art Awards.

Our mayor opened the display of art at the Moores building gallery.

Several local schools were represented with each school awarded two winners. Our successful students who each received a certificate and $80.00 were Dakota and Charlie G.

I was very proud of the achievements of Dakota and Charlie as well as all of the students who entered. They represented icons around Fremantle in a variety of styles and media. Their efforts were brilliant!

School Photos.

Thank you for your support for our school photo day.

School Board.

At the recent Board meeting parent/teacher meetings were discussed along with information around the Cultural Inclusivity committee, the Comparative budget for June, the Chaplaincy program, Interactive screen technology, the end of year school review, goal setting as part of our Business Plan monitoring tool, P&C Strategic Plan and reviewing aspects of the 2018 school survey.

Term Three Events.

Due to poor weather our Winter carnival was cancelled for Term Two. Moving into Term Three there will be Cross Country and our annual Athletics carnival.

Other events will include our Open Night and Book Week Parade.

Currently the school is having a mural of our [PBS] mascot, ROS standing for Respect, Organised and Safe painted on the wall on Hope Street. This will be completed by the end of term with another one depicting a magpie and raven being undertaken during Term Three. They will be depicting the Dreaming story shared with the students at the Smoking Ceremony earlier in the year.

School Improvements.

During the school break we have organised to have the sand in the major playground cleaned ready for the start of Term Three.

We are also embarking on the first stage of a replacement program for our classroom projectors. The school is moving to new interactive board technology that will be wireless accessed and also give students more interactive capabilities during class lessons. These have been researched with staff visiting other schools who too have recently looked at incorporating these boards into their teaching and learning programs.

School Happenings.

Students in Years 4 and 5 will be participating in a Food Bank inspired program called ‘Food Sensations’. They will participate in a healthy cooking session and then join together to eat what they make. Last week Year 4 joined in online with other schools across Australia following someone in China exploring local restaurants to order and eat a meal popular to that region.

As part of the curriculum program Year 4 and 5 will also be involved in an excursion to Scitech to look at Natural Disasters/Sustainability [Year 4] and Space Science [Year 5].

Coming home this week will be a letter about the ICAS competition dates for 2019. These competitions through the University of NSW give students [Years 2-6] the opportunity to undertake timed papers at their year level for a range of subjects. Students who have entered in the past have enjoyed the challenge that they provide.

The cost per paper is $14.50. I will supervise and support the students when they undertake them.  If after speaking to your child, you would like to be involved could you return the slip and money by Friday, 2nd  August.

On behalf of the staff here at White Gum Valley I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Break with family and friends.

Thank you for your ongoing support for our school.
