Term 1, 2017 

The Year 2 children have settled in well to their new learning environment and have made a positive start to the school year. The students loved the wellbeing incursion about the importance of Resilience. We are all excited to continue learning about Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness in the classroom though out the year.

Literacy

Reading

Home Reading is encouraged each night. Students are required to bring their Green Reading Folder to school each day and their two readers are changed on Monday and Thursday.  Students also participate in Guided Reading sessions in the classroom.

 

Writing

This term students have been looking at the structure of recounts (diary writing), narratives (creative stories) and persuasive writing. They have produced their own writing pieces in each genre. They have also focused on the use of basic punctuation skills such as capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks and question marks in their writing.

 

Grammar

Nouns, verbs and adjectives.

 

Spelling

This Term students have five spelling words to learn each week based on the blends covered in class.  Students are encouraged to practice their weekly spelling words at home in preparation for our spelling quiz on Friday mornings.

Numeracy

Number and Algebra

Basic addition and subtraction facts, place value, odd/even numbers and ordinal numbers.

 

Measurement and Geometry

2D shapes (their names and properties).

 

Statistics and Probability

Classifying events as certain, possible and impossible.

Units of Inquiry

Communication is influenced by feelings and emotions

Term 2, 2017

The Year 2 students are focusing on ‘cooperation’ by discussing and role modeling ways they can show empathy and compassion towards others. Your child will be encouraged to further develop their independence and organisational skills.

Literacy

Grammar

We will be focusing on full stops, capital letters, commas, talking marks, question marks and editing processes.

 

Directed Writing

  • Procedural texts – focusing on instructions, recipes and following directions.
  • Narrative writing – focusing on structure, idea development and punctuation.
  • Acrostic poems – related to our Units of Inquiry.
  • Informative texts – using explanations and descriptions to describe different forces.

 

Spelling

The weekly spelling words will continue to focus on our weekly blend. Spelling words are personalised based on individual students’ needs.

Numeracy

Number and Algebra

Place value, counting patterns, skip counting, addition, subtraction, worded mathematical problems and automatic response skills.

 

Measurement and Geometry

Length, capacity, mass, telling the time (quarter to and quarter past times), reading calendars, complex 2D shapes and their features.

 

Statistics and Probability

Collecting and classifying data, interpreting graphs and data.

HOW THE WORLD WORKS

Forces change the way things move

Speaking & Listening

The Year 2 students presented their research on a sport or activity to their peers as part of an Oral presentation. They are also building their confidence, eye contact and voice projection as they share their skills and talents at Year 2 assembly.

Term 3, 2017

The students are excited about our new Unit of Inquiry focusing on ‘Sharing the Planet’ with minibeasts. Our IMAX excursion on Wednesday 9 August will be a highlight .

Literacy

Reading

Students participate in weekly Literacy reading groups on a Thursday. At school, the students will be focusing on making connections with a text they have read. They will make a connection to a book, person or to something they have experienced in the world. This will further develop their comprehension skills.

 

Grammar

The students are developing their editing skills. We will be revising the use of punctuation, including full stops, commas, speech marks, exclamation marks and capitals.

 

Directed Writing

During writing sessions, the students will be focusing on narrative writing including improved structure, paragraphs and punctuation. We will be introducing informative texts throughout the term and the students will be preparing an informative poster about a minibeast.

 

Spelling

This term the students have increased their spelling words to 7 words. These words are based on our weekly blend, as well as individual words. The students will be choosing common words to revise from their writing pieces. 

Numeracy

Number and Algebra

Multiplication (groups of and times tables), fractions (halves, quarters, thirds and eighths) and money (counting collections and transactions).

 

Measurement and Geometry

2D and 3D shapes, congruency, symmetry and area.

 

Statistics and Probability

Exploring 'Chance' through experiments.

Units of Inquiry

SHARING THE PLANET

Living things and their environment are interconnected

 

Lines of inquiry:

  • The characteristics of minibeasts
  • The way minibeasts adapt to their environments
  • The different roles minibeasts play in their environment

Speaking & Listening
