Welcome Back

A warm welcome back to everyone following the term break. The second (next) week of term 4 is a curriculum planning week for staff – which entails a few changes to the specialist timetable to accommodate team planning meetings (Creative Arts, Japanese, PE). The regular timetable will recommence the following week.

Welcome

We welcome Alistair Longley as our IT Technician at MPW. Alistair has been employed by the Department of Education and Training in other school settings and is very familiar with Department's IT requirements.

Enrolment of Siblings for 2017

A further reminder to families who are yet to enrol siblings of current students for the 2018 Foundation year. Enrolment documents are available from the office. Finalising our enrolments for 2018 is an essential part of our planning for the 2018 school year.

Grade Placement for 2018

The demand for places at Moonee Ponds West continues to be high. If you are leaving the school during term 4 or at the end of 2017 please let the office know at your earliest convenience. This will greatly assist our forward planning and also the transition of those students leaving at the end of the year into their new schools.

  • If you have  information of which your child’s teacher is unaware of that may assist with your child’s class placement for 2018 please put your request in writing and forward to Jeff Lyon via email to [email protected]

by Monday 30th of October. This request will then be registered for consideration. In formulating a request please refer to the school's grade placement policy below.

MVIMP

On Thursday 21st September Moonee Ponds West had our MVIMP Concert. It was held in the gym, we had many of the MVIMP students perform an item for the evening. They have be rehearsing over a number of weeks in preparation for the concert. Through their weekly lessons with their tutors they rehearsed an item. It was a fantastic evening for parents, families and students to see what they have been working on throughout the year. Well done to all of the students who performed on the evening and a special thanks to all of the tutors for their work throughout the evening.

Upcoming on Thursday 16th November will be the End of Year MVIMP Concert where all four schools will come together for the end of year concert. Over the next few weeks there will be more information about the concert in the newsletter.

Year 2 Sleepover next week

A reminder that the Year 2 sleepover is to take place on Thursday next week.

The Year 2 Sleepover is an important part of our Whole School Camp Program.  This is a special opportunity for students to experience being away from their families for one night and supports a gradual transition to the three-day camp they will participate in as Year 3 students.

The Year 2 Sleepover is held at the school, which is a familiar and non-threatening environment for all students. The Sleepover is heaps of fun and provides an opportunity for students to socialise with others in their year level. The evening involves a local walk, a hip-hop workshop with the students in the gym and a program of fun activities for the night.

Students will be settled in the Performance Space and Library, which are comfortable and self-contained. All that is required on the night is a camping mat (or similar), a sleeping bag, pillow and some great dance moves!

Room 23

Helen Lockart will be on leave for the remainder of 2017. Families of students in Room 23 have been notified that Lauren Klymenko will be continuing the teaching and learning in Room 23 during Helen's absence.

Room 21

Jenny Irvine is on indefinite leave for personal reasons. Families of students in Room 21 have been notified that Jane Ryan will be continuing the teaching and learning in Room 21 during Jenny's absence.

Join thousands of Victorian families for Walk to School 2017!

Get ready, get set for Walk to School 2017!

On Monday Moonee Ponds West launched Vic Health Walk to School October.  In conjunction with Vic Health and the AFL Players association, Danny Pearson (Local Member), Neville Jetta (Melbourne FC) and Bree White (our fabulous PE teacher) helped kick start the campaign.

MPW has joined the hundreds of primary schools across Victoria for a fun month of walking, riding and scooting to and from school. By participating, we have a chance to win some great prizes! So every time our local families walks, rides or scoots to and from school during October, you increase our school’s chance of winning!

Student challenge cards:

Don’t forget to complete your challenge card each day you walk and also mark yourself off your classroom calendar, once your challenge card is complete hand it into the office. We will then get them to Council so they will go into the draw to win some great prizes.

Prizes include:

3 x $150 sport voucher

5 x  Bounce Essendon pass

5 x $50  Westfield voucher

Look out for Council or Police Officers either at the school crossing or in front of the school gate between 8.15am - 9am on this day Friday 20th October.  They will be handing out the gold star to those who have walked, cycled or scootered to school to add to the challenge card.

Student poster challenge:

Council will be holding a Poster challenge for all participating students. The winning artist will receive a sports store voucher valued at $150.

The poster should show:

  • students and their friends walking to school
  • something funny, pretty or interesting that students have seen while walking to or from school
  • a slogan about why kids should walk to school
  • if students are too far to walk all the way, their poster could highlight park and walk locations

To enter, students should complete their poster and put it up in a visible position at school, then email [email protected] with their name, phone number, school, a photo of their poster (a photo taken on a phone is fine) and its location. The three most creative designs will be framed, displayed at a Council venue and on Facebook, and three Council staff will choose a winner.

The winning artist will receive a sports store voucher valued at $150.

Decorate your shoes, bikes or scooter

If your school participates in the decorate your shoes, bikes and scooter activity – add this also

In 2017, we’re encouraging our kids to put their best foot forward by decorating their shoes, bikes or scooters to make Walk to School even more fun. Get involved with us for Walk to School and help your family build healthy habits for life: walktoschool.vic.gov.au. This activity will be run by VicHealth.

About Walk to School:

Every October, VicHealth’s Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school kids and their families to walk, ride or scoot to and from school every day. It’s a great way for the whole family to increase their physical activity levels. Plus, it is a chance to enjoy more time with your kids and meet other local families along the way.

Along with the health benefits, it also reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and friends and saves the environment!

Part way is okay! If you can’t walk the whole way, why not try parking the car a few blocks from your school and walk, ride or scoot the rest.

Last year, more than 144,000 kids and their families took part in the program walking the equivalent of two return trips to the moon and with your families help, we can make 2017 our biggest year yet!

There are so many great reasons to participate in Walk to School this October and we’re excited to be part of the fun because getting active is even more fun when we do it together!

Planning Week

Next week is planning week at school for all classroom and specialists teachers. Planning week occurs once a term and involves all year level teachers meeting together to focus on curriculum planning, professional development with both English and Mathematics coaches and event planning for the term.  The classroom teachers plan from 8.45am – 1.30pm and during this time students are taught by specialist teachers or a CRT (Casual Relief Teacher).

Students look forward to planning week and enjoy the variety of activities on offer.  Teachers continue their planning at assigned meetings conducted after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Planning days for Week 2 are:

  • Monday -1/2 and 2/3
  • Tuesday- Specialists
  • Wednesday- 3/4
  • Thursday- 5/6
  • Friday – Prep /1

Lost Property

In 2016 - 40kg of unnamed clothing and

30 items of unnamed plastic containers were donated to charity each month.

Our lost property is managed by parent volunteers and we need your help to reduce this huge workload and loss of property.

You can help by:

  • ensuring all belongings are clearly marked with student's names and room numbers
  • regularly check (and encourage your child/ren to check) for their lost property
  • remember it is the responsibility of students and families to regularly check lost property and reclaim items

When is unnamed lost property cleared and donated to charity?

  • Last Friday of every month

Where is lost property?

In the causeway at the entry to room 7 and 8 (near the toilet block off the little adventure playground).
