Message from Principal Sally

The final 2019 newsletter

Thanks to all the staff for their commitment to excellence and improvement.  Thanks to the parent community for their positive connections with our school and thanks to the students who demonstrate growth mindset and positive attitude.

Farewell Tyson

In the last newsletter, I farewelled staff who would not be returning but we have just received notification that our Tyson Smith has been appointed as Assistant Principal at Manorvale Primary School. As our school community are well aware, Tyson is a committed staff member who has actively worked to enhance community partnerships. His thoroughness and attention to detail in the Occupational Health & Safety space has ensured we are compliant, but most importantly a safe place to work and learn.

We congratulate him on this promotion and wish him well in his future endeavours.

Farewell Year 6 Students

Farewell to our Year 6 students and thank you to the school leaders. The 2020 school leaders will be announced at the last assembly at 9 am on Friday 20th December.

2020 Plans for a maths/science tour

North Melbourne Primary school is exploring the opportunity of conducting a Science Technology Engineering Arts & Mathematics (STEAM) Frontiers & Applications Tour.

This tour would need a minimum of 10 students to be feasible. If the 2020 Year 6 cohort expressed interest the tour would run late in 2020. If the 2020 Year 5 cohort expressed interest the tour would run in 2021.

This tour will be held in Huntsville and Los Angeles, USA. This experience is offered as an optional excursion to immerse in the field of STEAM. On this tour students are given the opportunity to attend the Marshall Space Flight Centre to complete a 5-day Space Camp, Universal Studios and Disneyland. A sample of the itinerary for the tour has been provided.
STEAM: Missions & Applications tour is priced at $6,000 per person (broken down into payment installments over a 9-month period), with only the following items not included:

  • The cost of a passport ($143 AUD for students aged under 16, $293 for those aged over 16)
  • The cost of an ESTA (VISA application for Australian citizens - $14 USD)
  • Any discretionary spending money

If you are interested in having your child attend this tour, could you please contact me via email. Teachers would accompany students on this tour at a ratio of 2: 15
We will be holding a Parent Information Night for interested families in early Term 1 on Wednesday 5th February at 6 pm. All families are welcome to attend.
Please note, returning this expression of interest, does not confirm your child’s attendance on the tour, nor does it obligate you to anything financially. At this stage, we are seeing if there is enough interest.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Active & Safe Travel to School Project

Our new bike shed is being put to good use

Parents & Friends fundraising has supported the building of this storage area on the east side of the school. It's wonderful to see evidence of so many of our students actively  riding to school.

Active and safe travel to North Melbourne Primary School is a project initiated by staff and parents at NMPS and managed by a committee of those people.

This project aims to improve local area road safety for our students and their families by:

  • Encouraging more families to walk, scoot and cycle to school more often as a first choice to travel to school, to reduce the total number of vehicles at the school gate
  • Encouraging park and walk options to disperse the total number of vehicles within the local school area
  • Improving the efficiency of students being dropped-off through a better functioning “drop and go zone” and supporting behavioural interventions, which address specific barriers and issues identified by the school community
  • Co-designing appropriate strategies with the diverse community groups of NMPS

Parents & Friends Committee

Farewell 2019

From Gen Kelly, P & F

Parents and friends wrap up 2019 with a hearty thank you to the North Melbourne School Community for your engagement with all of the events and experiences we set up this year. We have had a fantastic year with lots of new connections made and friendships established across the whole school cohort. We have had a lot of fun setting up social events, raffles, bake sales, morning teas, Mother's Day treats, book fairs, Teacher Appreciation Day and we have set up some new great communications between the school and the parents that we feel will be helpful for everyone. We have held some very successful fundraising drives that have helped to put $15,000 towards school works such as the new bike sheds and that is all thanks to the support of our school community.

Keep an eye out next year for the continuation of the Wednesday afternoon "stay and play" in the triangle park across from the school, more great social events and most excitingly a fun run/fete to be held in early 2020.

We welcome any parents or carers to join us to be part of the Parents and Friends association were we regularly catch up, make plans, host events and make connections.

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month at 7pm and all are welcome to attend.

End of year picnic - Everyone welcome!

You are invited to the end of year picnic at Gardener Reserve this Friday from 2pm.
