Dear Families,

It has been a tumultuous time in world history recently. I visited the supermarket last weekend and the line ups at the checkout, people waiting with arms full of groceries and the empty shelves, reminded me of my history studies, seeing pictures of war time society. Thankfully the only 'enemy' in this battle is a germ called COVID-19 that we are all trying to deal with in our own way.

COVID-19 Coronavirus

Whilst we always try to be proactive and well prepared, we are very much relying on directives from the Australian and Victorian Government and the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria for advice and the latest information. The advice that we have today, may change tomorrow!

The latest advice is:

  • If a staff member or student at St Paul's school is a confirmed case, or close contact of a confirmed case of COVID-19, we will contact the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) on 1300 651 160 as soon as we are informed.
  • Following advice from Dr Brett Sutton, Chief Health Officer, that ‘pre-emptive school closures are not likely to be proportionate or effective as a public health intervention to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 at this time’ schools remain open. This advice is constantly under review and we will update you immediately if it changes.

The following advice comes directly from Jim Miles, Acting executive director, Catholic Education Melbourne.

Supporting our Families:

We are all aware that some people in our school communities have heightened levels of concern and anxiety regarding the many impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. These thoughts and feelings are normal and understandable.

Most adults and children will be able to manage these feelings through being resilient and practising positive coping skills.

However, some may feel overwhelmed and unable to adequately express their concerns. This may result in escalated levels of distress or worry.

Conversations with children and young people
Families and caregivers of children and young people should discuss news of the virus with those in their care in an open and honest way.

Try to relate the facts without causing alarm, and in a way that is appropriate for their age and temperament.

It is important to listen to any questions they may have, and to let them know that they are safe and that it’s normal to feel concerned.

If the media or the news is getting to be too much for them, encourage them to limit their exposure.

Resources
A range of key resources, including videos and tips for young people, have been collated to help promote ongoing wellbeing and good health across the school community:

Home Learning: FUSE Learning from Home Site

We are all aware that there are school closures occurring overseas and in the Victorian Independent system. I wish to reassure parents that, in the event of closure, St Paul's staff are well equipped to put together a Home Learning Plan.

For those families that have chosen to self isolate, we thank you for your understanding that teachers are focussed on their work in the classroom while we remain open.  We are happy to share ideas and general outlines of learning, however managing learning within the classroom, as well as outside the classroom, is not possible.

For families looking for ideas, I sent an email to families last Monday 16 March (subject: COVID-19 Update) with ideas for online home learning.  Further to this, today we received notification that the FUSE website has created a home learning page.  This page has been established to support school and early childhood leaders, teachers, students, children and parents access digital resources that can be used to support learning at home.  Please CLICK HERE to access the FUSE Learning From Home site.

Reconciliation

Announcement:

  • Sacrament of First Reconciliation and Family Workshop have been POSTPONED

Car Park - Safety and Traffic Flow Reminder

It is always pleasing to note that our families generally follow the rules of the school car park, both before and after school. However, it is of concern to staff, and no doubt parents, when we see some children  having to make their way independently through the traffic on the asphalt area or the gravel car park out the front of our administration. For the safety and wellbeing of all, I would like to emphasise that children are always escorted to cars or the asphalt pathways surrounding the car park by an adult, and conversely that the children are escorted to cars by an adult at the end of the school day.

In the mornings, please do not park in the 'drop off zone'.  This space is designed to let children out of the car safely onto the asphalt path and keep moving.  If parents need to park their car in the morning, please reverse park up to the fence adjacent to the Year 4/5 classroom, or park in the middle of the asphalt area and escort children into school.   The school car park map is displayed further in this newsletter.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in these matters.

Term 2 school Closure Day

There is no school for students on Monday 15 June.  Staff will be engaged in Professional learning focussed on spelling.

OSHCare Update - Thanks Cherie and YLV!

THANK YOU YOUTH LEADERSHIP VICTORIA!

Youth Leadership Victoria will finish with St Paul's on Friday 26 March.   We acknowledge and thank Rita, YLV Director, and Shereen, YLV Leader, for setting up the program and supporting St Paul's.   Most of all, we thank and acknowledge Cherie, our marvellous educator, who has been part of St Paul's during YLV's time with us.  We thank Cherie for her dedication and enthusiasm, her hard work in building the program and her work with families.  Cherie has been terrific, caring for our students and going above and beyond on many occasions to make herself visible and approachable around the school.  We will miss Cherie, and YLV, and we wish them every blessing in the future.

Our After School Care service will move off site and will join with OSHClub at Monbulk Primary School.  There are many schools in Victoria that are in close proximity to one another and combine their OSHCare services. We are very grateful to Estelle, Principal at Monbulk PS, as well as Philippa and her staff at OSHClub for their support.  The first day of the new service will be Tuesday 14 April.

Where to from here?

Parents will need to enrol with OSHClub.  Please visit https://www.oshclub.com.au/ and click on "REGISTER".  You will need to enrol with the Monbulk Primary School service.

*PLEASE NOTE: Our OSHClub Parent Information Night has been cancelled.  Information for parents will be sent out via email that explains exactly how our new system will work, including transporting students to Monbulk PS each day.

School Photos - Change of Date

Our school photos will now take place on 14 July.  This is the second day of Term 3.  Please note the change of date.

Inter School Sport

The latest advice from School Sport Victoria is that:

All excursions outside the school for purposes such as visits to cultural institutions, art galleries, theatres and sporting events or facilities are postponed or cancelled. School sport is considered an excursion, which means that all inter-school sporting events and competitions from Tuesday 17 March have been postponed immediately until further notice.

Enrolments Now Open

Enrolling at St Paul's is easy!  We welcome enrolments throughout the year and are currently accepting Prep enrolments for the 2021 school year.

Our innovative transition process includes Open days and Taster Days however, under current social distancing conditions, we have suspended Open days and Taster Days until further notice.  Enrolments for Prep 2021 will still be accepted.

PE News - Regional Swimming

We congratulate our Division Swim team - Grace, Caitlin, Tess, Antoinette - on their efforts at last week's Regional Championships held at Aquanation.  This was a fantastic effort, competing at such a high level.  We are very proud of all competitors!

ROAD CLOSURE Prices Rd

Reconstruction and sealing of Prices Road will begin on 23 March 2020 and Prices Rd will be closed.  There will be traffic disruptions.  Please find below, a link to a document that contains layout plans for proposed works .  A copy of these plans has been sent in the mail to the school and residents along Prices Road:

Planned Burns

It’s been a very challenging summer, with bushfires that have severely impacted people and the environment across large areas of the country. The FFMVic and CFA Joint Fuel Management Plan for Victoria was released in November last year and includes the planned burning program for 2020 in the Dandenong Ranges (more detail at ffm.vic.gov.au/jfmp). Many of these are critical asset protection burns to protect communities, visitors and businesses in the Dandenong Ranges and surrounding areas. These strategic burns are designed to reduce bushfire intensity and prevent them spreading - this assists our firefighters in controlling them.

Crews are monitoring weather and fuel moisture levels to identify suitable opportunities to carry out these burns in the Dandenong Ranges.  You may notice smoke in the air or see fires in the hills at this time.

Kind Regards,
