PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Margaret O'Donnell

Just a quick introduction to the community.  My name is Margaret O’Donnell, I am a Principal Consultant with Catholic Education Melbourne and was the Primary Principal of St Gregory the Great Primary School in Doncaster.

 

I have only been here two days but, I am delighted with the warm welcome I have received.

I will be with you for the next few weeks and have loved meeting all the student and the families.

 

I will be working closely with Matt Cherry, who will be Acting Principal on Thursdays and Fridays, to ensure effective and clear Leadership until Carmel returns on Wednesday 4th September.

Please come and introduce yourself to me, if we have not yet met.

 

You can find me on the playground doing before and after school duty every Monday to Wednesday and I would love to meet you.

Learning Expo's

This Friday sees our Year 5/6 have their learning expo.  All Parents and Carers are invited to come and see the wonderful work our children are doing.  See you Friday afternoon!

Our Learning Expo dates are as follows:

Prep - 2 Friday September 5th at 2.45pm

Greetings from Mrs Stewart

Mrs Stewart has been having a wonderful time on her European holiday and has just finished up spending two weeks in Italy.  Whilst there she came upon St Agnes' Church in Rome.

LITERACY UPDATE

Literacy News

Term Three is certainly a busy one for 2019.

 Students are completing the Premiers Reading Challenge,enjoying their weekly Library time, engaging in Literacy/ Daily 5 in class and focussing on  CAFE strategies to improve their comprehension of texts.

 

The Perceptual Motor Program is being ably run and supported by the Foundation teachers, Mrs Baker, Mrs. Moulton and also Miss Miller, not to forget the fantastic parent volunteers.

 

 There are a number of programs running within the school to support student Literacy development, facilitated by our wonderful Learning Support Officers, Deb Smith and  Lynn Miller and also parent volunteer Mrs Vilma Koptidis. We encourage you, if you are able, to share some of your time and expertise to support our students as a classroom helper, it really is a most rewarding experience!   

 

 A big thanks to all who contributed books to the big book donation in Term One, these books have been collated and are now ready to be distributed to class- rooms to further enrich classroom reading.

A number of new Take Home readers have been purchased, collated and covered during last term and have entered circulation this term.The students are enjoying the variety of many new stories and themes. 

 

 

 Book Week Celebration Day on Monday 19th August 

We have all written letters to our  visiting author/ illustrator Mark Wilson, who we will welcome to

St Agnes' on Monday 19th August.

 

Mark will work with all our students and share his love of writing which is a particular focus in our Literacy Learning this year. We invite all our students to “ dress up” on Book Week Day and encourage them to consider the rich range of Australian Literature in their choice of character costume.

 

 At the commencement of the day there will be a parade of costumes in the School Hall, followed by Literacy activities in the classrooms.

 

Please feel welcome to attend the parade and join our students from Grade 3- 6 to share the learning.

Foundation and Grade 1/ 2 will be having their session with Mark at this time.

 

 The list of recommended books is an exciting and diverse one and the theme for Book Week 2019 is “Reading is my Secret Power”. 

 

This is a great time of year to focus on sharing books at home with your family and discuss with your children how the “Power of Reading”  supports you.

Premiers' Reading Challenge

Congratulations to 30 students who have completed the challenge.

Three of the students have already reached 100 books.

 

We have only 4 weeks to go until the Premiers' Reading Challenge closes so keep the good work and keep reading.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal

St Agnes received a letter of thanks for their generous donation of food for the recent St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.

Whole school participation in so valuable to such an important appeal. The school donations, combined with those from St Mary's school and both parishes, allowed the Society to make up 37 hampers for families and a further 10 for singles.

 

St Vincent de Paul changes lives every day and our support enables this good work to assist the 1.8 million Australians facing hardship that turn to them each year.  

 

A huge thank you and well done to all the St Agnes Community.

 

Level Mass

This Term when your levels attend Parish Mass, we would like to extend an invitation for you to join your child at Mass.

Every Thursday morning at 9.00 am there is a Parish mass.

WELLBEING

DBT Psychology

We are now in our second term of welcoming DBT Psychology and our amazing psychologist Gudrun to St Agnes'. 

 

Gudrun comes to school each Thursday and supports students with a ranges of psychological issues such as anxiety, friendship problems, loneliness and grief.

 

She is very friendly and easy to talk to, students often leave her sessions with a big smile on their face and eager to see her again. 

 

This term we are fortunate enough to have some availabilities in Gudrun's schedule.

 

If you feel as if your child may benefit from seeing Gudrun, please send me an email and I will forward you on all the information you will need.

Family Faith Nights

I am writing to all families regarding St Agnes' School inviting you to attend a meeting to:

·         Revisit the purpose of the Catholic School

·         The role you as parents have in the St Agnes Catholic School

·         The partnership between the School and the Parish

 

Families

To enable all families to have an opportunity to listen, share and respond, there is an option for meeting dates, which are as follows:

·         Tuesday 20th August             Grades Foundation, 1 & 2         7.00 pm

·         Tuesday 27th August              Grade 3 & 4                                        7.00 pm

·         Tuesday 3rd September        Grade 5 & 6                                       7.00 pm

 

These meetings will be held at the Church. All families are asked to come to ONE meeting.

 

If you have children in more than one grade, please choose a date that you will attend. You need to attend only ONE MEETING. Staff will be attending all meetings.

FETE UPDATE

Term 3 Update

Welcome back to term 3, we hope you all had a lovely break and managed to keep warm over the holidays.

 

The fete team has been busy booking rides, sourcing donations, sponsorships and finalising our major raffle prizes.

 

It is now time for the St Agnes’ community to roll up your sleeves and get helping.

 

In the school foyer is a wheelbarrow kindly donated by the Villani family. This wheelbarrow will be 3rd prize in our major raffle, but to make it more appealing we need to fill it up with alcohol. We ask that each family drop off a bottle of wine, champagne or beer, and place in the wheelbarrow.

 

Spring is only 4 weeks away, so it is now time to start spring-cleaning. GoBox have kindly donated a storage box for us to store our trash and treasure so start gathering all your unwanted goodies and once the container arrives we will let you know when you can start dropping your goodies off.

We are happy to take any old toys, games, crockery, books, records and furniture all in good reusable condition. For safety reasons we are unable to take any electrical items.

 

Last week a wine fundraiser form was sent home and a PDF copy is attached to the newsletter. This has been a popular fundraiser in the past and the wines are certainly good quality. Please feel free to share this with family and friends the more orders the better.

The Eagerly Anticipated Wine Sale

Supporting the 2019 Fete Has Arrived!

 

Settle in to a comfy chair while you decide which smooth reds or crisp whites take your fancy for the spring season.  Every glass you raise will be contributing towards fundraising for the fete.

Each bottle is custom labelled with the St Agnes’ logo, so you can always remember the event you have raised funds for.

 

Do you have family or friends who don’t live in Bayside and would like to support the wine drive? They can have orders for Full Dozens delivered direct to their door for a small fee.

Please return your orders by Sunday 25th August 2019 at the latest.

  1. The P&F box in the school foyer.

Payment can be made by cash or credit card, although credit card is the preferred method.

Orders will be delivered towards the middle of September.

Father’s Day Stall – Friday 23rd August
 

The P&F team will be holding a Father’s Day Stall this year.

Children will be able to make purchases for their dad, grandad or special friend.

 

We have a great selection of items for sale, ranging from $2 - $8. Classes will be sent over to the hall, one at a time to make their purchases.

 

To ensure there are enough items for all the classes we ask that children limit the amount they are buying to $15 or 3 items each. Cash only and BYO bag.

Father’s Day / Special Person Breakfast –

Once again the mums are putting on a breakfast for the dads, special friends and kids.

 

A delicious all inclusive menu of bacon & egg roll, cereal, coffee/tea & juice will be available.

P&F Friday Afternoon BBQ's

The BBQ’s are weather dependent and if you are able to volunteer your time to help sizzle and sell them when your class is rostered on, please see your class rep as we need at least 3 - 4 helpers.

 

The children love them and they are a very handy fundraiser for the P&F so it is a shame to have to cancel due to a lack of helpers

UNIFORM UPDATE

New Uniform Shop

Our new St Agnes' uniforms have arrived in store at Noone's in Hampton. 

The location is in Hampton Street, just down from Safeway and next to the Newsagents.

Attached is the price list for the uniforms.

 

If you are unable to get to the Noone store in Hampton street you can:

  • Email a order to them the form is below or

    The email is:  hampton@noone.com.au 

  • Ring them on 9070 3910 and place a phone order.

Orders that are received by Friday will be delivered to the school on the following Monday.

 

The beanies are in  production. We will let you know when they arrive at the Noone store and are available for purchase.

 

 

 

Second Hand Uniform

Second hand uniform only, can still be purchased in the uniform shop at St Agnes' at the below times:

 

1st Friday of term in the afternoon between 3-3.30 pm

1st Tuesday of term in the morning between 8.30-9 am

EXTEND-Before/After School Care

What’s Been Happening?
 

We’ve started to plan and write our book for the Pyjama Foundation as a part of this year’s Extend-a-Hand initiative.

 

A highlight was a visit from Mrs Mandy Cooper, one of the judges for the 2019 CBCA Book of the Year Awards, to help us with our planning.

 

We will be celebrating our finished book at the end of week 4 with a Pyjama Party! Apart from writing our book, we will keep on traveling the world. So far we focused on Oceania. We’ve made our passports and some amazing crafts from New Zealand and had a taste of fried bread, a favourite Maori dish. Next week we are off to Vietnam.

 

AUSLAN

From Wednesday 15th  August we are very excited about the fact that we will  be learning Auslan during our afternoon  service! Come and join us!
