PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Margaret O'Donnell

Dear  Parents, Carers, Students and Community,

I have been here two weeks at St Agnes', Highett. and I am delighted with the work ethic of the students and their respectful manners and attitude.

Yours is a warm welcoming community full of hope and promise for the future. Your children will be the leaders of our next generation and I would say that our country will be in good hands.

The first of our Family Nights will be held tonight and is facilitated by Sister Judith, I am sure the evening will be enjoyed by everyone who is coming along. It's not too late to come along just ring the office or simply turn up tonight.   The other two Family Nights  are scheduled for the next two Tuesdays, 27th August and 3rd September and families are welcome to join in these sessions.

A letter was sent to you on Skookbag yesterday from the Chair of our Education Board,

Myles Whelan, with exciting news about the Master Plan proposal for the development of St Agnes' School.  Please view the plans and information in the school foyer. We are hopeful that some building work may begin before the end of the this year.

GRADE 5/6 CAMP

Grade 5/6 Camp

By John Whitten and Edward Groom

From 12th-14th August we went to Arrabri Lodge for our 5/6 camp. Our hosts Sean, Paul and Jenna really looked after us on their beautiful property in the hills of Warburton East.

Our first day was busy with activities. We did the rope course first and then did the sensory trail, it was very cool. That night we had chicken schnitzel for dinner. After that we had a very busy evening: a bush dance and then braving the cold conditions on a night walk.We had to find the letters from A to Z. At the end, they had a fire going to toast marshmallows. By the time we got back to our cabins we were exhausted and fell “straight” to sleep; rumours of  people playing murder in the dark are completely unfounded.

The next day Miss Casey woke us all up to misty conditions and it felt like we were in the clouds. Soon it cleared slightly and we did the giant swing and the flying fox.

The giant swing was so cool and SO SO SCARY and the flying fox was great too. Then we made dampers on the campfire (it was hard to make a good one that wasn't burnt). That night we had lasagna and chips with options of salad. Then, after dinner, we had camp idol which is basically a talent show. Lots of people had good acts. The teachers handed out lollies to the people who did the acts and to random people.

On the third and final day, 5/6 went to Healesville Sanctuary and saw the tassie devils, the reptile room and the bird house. We were going to see the wombats but they were blocked by a wild wallaby that was thumping around their enclosure. In the reptile room some of the 5/6's saw some amphibians mating we think! Finally, the birds of prey entertained us at the Spirit of the Sky show (Kev the talking bird was the most hilarious). Then we had lunch and headed home.

We would like to thank Sean, Paul and Jenna for making camp the best experience for the grade 5/6s. Also, of course, the teachers Miss Casey, Mrs. Kettle, Mr. Whitten, Mr. Cherry, Mr. Kost, Ms Smith and Miss Georgiou for organising camp.

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATION DAY

Book Week Celebration Day on Monday 19th August

The ”Secret Power of Reading” was certainly at St. Agnes’ School today!

A multitude of colourful costumes and a variety of theme!

After the parade, the students all had time to have a wonderful hour with Mark Wilson, our guest speaker for the day. Mark shared his writing practice and students were involved in co - illustrating with Mark as he talked about all the books he has written and illustrated.

Mark has given us a drawing from one of his books and we will arrange to display it in the school foyer over the next few days. The Students will be writing to Mark over the coming weeks to thank him for a fabulous and informative morning!

We were ably guided through the day by our Library monitor Que Merrick and his support team- Ewan H, Addison Whiteside and Robbie Bimgham. A big thank you to those students!

All our students were engaged during the day in many great classroom activities related to the Australian Book Week Award Nominations.

“Cicada” by Sean Tan was a popular choice for Art representations, "Rainbow Bear” by Stephen Michael King was another favourite, also “Noni the Pony” by Alison Lester.

Just as in the story “ Chalk Boy” by Margaret Wild and illustrated by Mandy Orr, it will  hopefully be a while before the memories of today fade and the rain dissolves Year 5/ 6 chalk drawings based on this book in the playground.

FOUNDATION CLASS

Foundation 100 Days

Last Friday our wonderful Foundation children celebrated 100 days of being at school.

We had such a special day filled with lots of fun activities. In the morning we went on a treasure hunt to find 100 numbers to stick onto our 100 number chart. Luckily we had our Grade 6 buddies to help us!

We then made colourful bead necklaces using 100 beads! After recess, lots of mums, dads and grandparents joined us in the classroom to make cool 100 shaped glasses and a special party hat.

Following that we had an amazing special lunch in the hall with lots of yummy party food. There was even a special cake made by Lachlan's mum Krystle, to help us celebrate our day.

In the afternoon we had a whole school assembly where all the children received certificates, bubbles and lovely cards from their buddies. Many thanks to all the parents who were able to help out on the day.

A big thank you also to Miss Miller for creating a very special video of all the Foundation children.
