Dear Parents,

 

Welcome to Year Three! We have many fun activities and events planned for the school year and can’t wait to get started. 

 

This year will be an exciting transition for the children as they move from the Junior School to the Middle School. Children will work increasingly independently, read more challenging texts, and will take the NAPLAN tests for the first time. 

 

This handbook will give you an insight of what to expect throughout the year. We look forward to working with you and your child.  Please feel

free to contact us with any questions or concerns. The Parent/Teacher interview is a good opportunity to ask questions and share information about your child with their teacher.

Attendance

Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Children learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind.

In the event that your child does need to be away, please take note of the following instructions outlining how to notify the school of their absence.

 

Full Day Absences

A key feature of the COMPASS App is that it allows parents to quickly and conveniently notify the school of your child’s absence. Notification via the app (or browser version of COMPASS) will automatically update the class roll and provide a documented explanation of your child’s absence and is the school’s preferred method. Alternatively, please phone 9598 2293 or send a note to enable us to document absences. Other­wise, absences will be recorded as ‘unexplained’ for DET records.

 

Parent approvals for absences can be entered using the app for any time period up to 28 days  and can be entered ahead of time or retrospectively. Where possible, approvals should be entered prior to the absence occurring.

There is no need to change the default times of 8am – 5pm when reporting full-day absences.

 

A record of absences can be viewed in the browser version of Compass by clicking the ‘Profile (Attendance, Schedule, Reports)’ link on the Home page and selecting the ‘Attendance’ tab.

 

Lateness or leave during school hours for appointments etc., are reported via the V-Pass system on the iPads at the Office when you sign your child in/out - NOT via Compass!):

 

Late Arrivals 

Sign your child in via V-Pass and collect a Late Arrival pass from the Office for children arriving after 9.00am. These are then given to your child’s teacher.

 

Early Departures

Please report to the School Office to sign your child out via V-Pass and obtain an Early Departure pass form to be handed to your child’s teacher.

 

Supervision of Children

 

Please note that teachers are on Yard Duty before school from 8.45 to 9.00am and after school from 3:30 to 3:45 pm. Children who are in the playground before or after these hours are sent to Outside School Hours Care. Please ensure your child is registered to attend.

 

 

English

Reading & Viewing

This year we will continue our CAFÉ approach to reading. CAFÉ focuses upon Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Extending vocabulary.

 

In the classroom CAFÉ will give the children the opportunity to read, interpret and respond to a wide range of written and electronic material in different formats.

 

Activities are completed through individual, partner, small group and whole class reading. Children are encouraged to monitor their reading goals through conferencing with their classroom teacher.

 

Spelling

A word study program focussing on phonics, vocabulary, and spelling strategies will be taught from Foundation to Year 6 at Black Rock Primary School.

 

Word study involves active exploration of words –examining, manipulating, comparing and categorising – and offers children the opportunity to make their own discoveries about how words work. When children understand the spelling and meaning of words, they become more excited about words and are more confident to apply these correct strategies in their reading and writing. 

 

The children are assessed to determine their understanding and their errors are examined.  After this, the children are grouped into ‘like ability’ groups for instruction and they are taught at their point of need.

 

English

Writing

Writing activities will aim to build upon the children’s growing awareness of differences in writing a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.

Children will further develop their writing strategies through exploring rich pieces of literature, composing writing for authentic purposes and drawing upon their own experiences.

 

At Black Rock we use the Big Write and VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation) methodology to guide our teaching of writing. VCOP is based on the premise that ‘if they can’t say it, they can’t write it’. Learning is scaffolded in the classroom to allow children to become articulate thinkers and speakers, who in turn become articulate writers. It is a differentiated approach, allowing teachers to cater for varying needs. After completing a ‘Big Write’ children mark their own work using a criterion scale. This empowers the children by allowing them to analyse where their skill set lies, and specifically what steps they need to take in order to further their writing.

 

Handwriting

The children will continue to develop their handwriting skills, with a focus on the correct letter size, sloping, spacing and importantly, joining. We will be using the Write Well 3 handwriting book. Children will continue to write in grey lead. We ask that all homework is also completed in pencil. Our aim is for children to write in cursive script by the end of the year.

 

Speaking and Listening

Students will also be involved in informal discussions, small group discussions and formal presentations of project work. Being an active listener and asking relevant questions is also expected at this level and beyond.

 

 

Maths

We will be developing an understanding of the strands of Mathematics through the use of games, computers, using hands on manipulatives, worksheets and groups.

 

The following strands will be addressed:

  • Number Sense & Place Value
  • Algebra, including patterns, and functions.
  • Probability & Statistics
  • Data collection & Organisation, including graphs and tables.
  • Geometry
  • Measurement
  • Fractions & Decimals
  • Money & Financial Mathematics

 Mathletics will be used in the classroom to complement topics explored in class. Tasks to be completed at home will also be set using Mathletics. Children and parents will be informed when this component of their homework begins.

Teacher and Learning Support Leader

Katrina Hutchins
Level 3 and 4

The Teaching and Learning Support Leader will assist teachers and students in achieving the best educational outcomes throughout the year. They will work closely with the year level teachers to plan and implement rich literacy and numeracy activities where students will be both extended and supported. Depending on the students’ needs they will be exposed to a variety of learning environments, such as 1:1, focus groups and whole class activities. The Teaching & Learning Support Leader will work closely with teachers during curriculum and assessment planning, ensuring more support for individual needs.

As Katrina's  role also includes the extension of Level 3 students this role will replace CEAL.

Units of Inquiry

The following is a list of Units of Inquiry to be studied this year.

 

Community & Remembrance (History) ( Term 1)
Children will explore the history of the local community, the local community now and things we remember from history.
 
Plants in Action (Science) ( Term 2)
As part of biological sciences, children will explore the life cycle of plants, germination and growth of a seedling.
 
Geography beyond Australia (Geography) ( Term 3)
Children will explore interconnections and identify and describe locations, including Australia’s neighboring countries.
 
Melting Moments (Science) ( Term 4)
Children will explore how solids and liquids can change by adding or removing heat.
 
Student of the Week Awards
 
Student of the week awards will be given out at assembly throughout the year. It is the school’s policy that from Year Three and up, parents and children are NOT informed they are receiving an award allowing children to receive a genuine surprise when their name is called out at assembly.
 
 

NAPLAN and Curriculum

NAPLAN

 

NAPLAN tests skills such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and maths. It is important to remember that NAPLAN tests are not pass/fail tests.

 

Teachers will ensure that children are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. If you have any questions about your child's preparation for NAPLAN, you are encouraged to make a time to speak with their teacher.

Homework

The benefits of homework are:

  • Reinforcement of skills and strategies learned in class.
  • Independent practise can lead to mastery of material.
  • It teaches children to be responsible for their work.
  • It teaches organisational and time management skills.

 

A Parent’s Role In Homework

  • Be involved, but don’t complete the homework for your child.
  • Set a designated place at home for your student to work.  Supply paper, pencils, a ruler and other material needed.
  • Help your child establish a homework routine.
  • Encourage your child to do their best.

 

Homework Description

  • A reading routine needs to be maintained at home.
  • Children will be expected to complete a minimum of 15 minutes of reading daily.
  • Your child should still read ALOUD to an adult and should be read to by an adult.
  • In Year Three home reading should make up the majority of your child’s homework.
  • Homework will also include News Report presentations, maths tasks, spelling tasks and other literacy related tasks.
  • Throughout the year, children will be required to discuss their upcoming ‘Big Write’ at home. We encourage you to engage in as much discussion as possible with your child regarding the given ‘Big Write’ topic.
  • If for any reason a student is unable to complete their homework, a note from their parent must be brought along for the work to be excused.
  • If your child  is putting in effort and is still struggling, please bring the homework session to an end and send in a note or see your child’s teacher to explain the situation prior to the day it is due.

Camp Briars

Camp Briars will be held 19th– 20th April 2018

Camp Briars has proven to be a fantastic first school camp experience for our Year Threes. It offers a range of exciting outdoor activities for the children to participate in, with bunk bed accommodation.

 

If your child has not had the experience of staying away from home, please consider a few ‘sleepovers’ at a relative’s or friend’s house well before camp.

Tip: In previous years, parents have found visiting The Briars with their child a valuable experience in alleviating anxiousness. 

 

Detailed information regarding Year Three Camp will be sent home soon. The cost of the camp will be approximately $160. We hope to have 100% of Year Three children attending. Camp is often a highlight that the children look back on with fond memories.

 

Excursions and Incursions

Notices will be sent via COMPASS to inform children and their families of upcoming excursions and special visits to the school. We aim to provide children with meaningful and relevant experiences that enhance their classroom learning. Permission for children to attend excursions will be granted via COMPASS.

 

The following details the proposed Excursion and Incursion program for the year. Details closer to each event will be available closer to the dates :
