Principal's Report

Dear Families

Thank you to all the families who have met with classroom teachers over the past two weeks. The teachers appreciate the opportunity to connect with the family, know more about your child and set the level expectations over the year. If you need to follow up with the teacher in the future please make an appointment directly with them. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are staff professional development meeting nights so appointments are best avoided on those nights.

Diversity Garden

Stage 1 has been completed of the new diversity garden and the children have been exploring the area this week. This construction has been made available by the funds from the Parents Association and uniform shop.


St Mark's PA

The Parents Association have the colour explosion on the 15th March which will be raising money for play equipment and creating a range of play spaces for the children to enjoy. Money is used for projects that all children can enjoy. Please support this fun activity and make it a family event as well as socialise with other families at St Mark’s. Other families who are not part of St Mark’s are most welcome to attend.

Education Board

We have two vacancies on the board for 2020. The board meets four to six times a year.

The main duties of the school board are to:

  • Support the Catholic ethos of the school.
  • Assist in planning for the future development and direction of the school in consultation with the parish priest and principal
  • Advise on the setting of priorities for the school year.
  • Assist with policy development and review.
  • Advise on budget finance-related matters such as school fees.
  • Assist with activities that promote the school within the parish and the broader community.

Some of the initiatives the board has been involved in over the years are:

  • Outsourcing of Out of Hours Care,
  • Development of healthy eating policy of canteen,
  • Application of grants from Bendigo Bank,
  • School building development,
  • Campaigning to local members for better funding for Catholic schools
  • Introduction of the 1:1 device program in Years 3 – 6
  • Policies on Child Safe Standards
  • Advise on the development of the new reporting to parents

Foundation Enrolments for 2021

Enrolments for Foundation 2021 are now open. Current families who have a child eligible are asked to enrol by Friday 27th March.


As mentioned last week the newsletters will be fortnightly and the dates published for the term will be  March 12th and March 27th.






This week the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice.


We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion. Each family will receive a Project Compassion box and/or a set of envelopes for their donations or you can donate online via our website at

Children’s Liturgy

Every Sunday at 9:30am mass children (school age) are welcome to attend Children’s Liturgy. It is located in the small hall just behind the back wall of the church.

At Children’s Liturgy, children listen to the gospel and participate in a variety of activities. After the activity some  children are selected to bring up the gifts at the Offertory Procession.

PE News

District Swimming

We’ve recently had our District Swim Trials with about 60 children trying for the team. In the end we’ve ended up with a team of 26 very competent swimmers who will perform for the school at Noble Park Aquatic Centre next week. Below is a list of the children who made the team this year.

We also announced our Captains (C) and Vice-Captains (VC) above, for their outstanding contributions to the swimming team over many years!

Good luck to all of these children on Wed 4th March.

Ride2School Day- Friday 13th March

Every year at St Mark’s as a continual support of our keep active plan, we have achieved 80% of our school walking or riding to school on this special day. We’d love to have as many children as possible take on this challenge by either walking or riding this day (part way is ok). We’re even asking some teachers to get out there to some checkpoints to walk/ride with kids to school. We can’t wait to see as many kids and parents joining in on the day! 

The meeting points are:

Interschool Sport- Olympic Spirit Awards

This term while the Year 5/6’s have been competing in interschool sport there has been a particular focus on Good Sportsmanship and being Team Orientated! There’s been many children who’ve stepped up to the plate and shown great examples to the other children competing (both our school and the other teams). Several children have been awarded certificates for their positive work, and these people are:

Active April

This is a program run by the Victorian government trying to ensure people stay active. There are many health benefits to trying to achieve this through this program. There’s even prizes to be won! Check out the website and register.

House Cross Country-
Friday 20th March

The scheduled cross country will be undertaken between 9am-11am on Friday 20th March.  Years Foundation – 6 will be competing in the House Cross Country. Children are to wear their sports uniform along with their house coloured top on the day. 


Approximate times are detailed below:

9:10am: Year 2 Boys & Girls (1.5km – 3 laps of ovals) 

9:15am: Under 11 Boys & Girls (3km – 3 laps of whole school, boundary)

9:40am: Foundation Boys & Girls (600m – 2 laps of football oval)

9.50am(Boys), 10.00am (Girls): Under  9 & 10 Boys & Girls (2km – 2 laps of whole school boundary)

10:30am: Under 12 Boys & Girls (3km – 3 laps of whole school, boundary)

10:15am: Grade 1 Boys & Girls (1 km – 2 laps of ovals)


I am able to assist with the Cross Country (3.40pm- setup- No working with Children Check required) or between 9:00am and 11:00am (Working with Children Check required) on Friday 20th March.

Running Club

Over the next month we'll be having a running club to assist the Year 3-6 students to prepare for next month's House Cross Country. Running club is where they'll do different running activities to help them be best prepared for their cross country event. For the Foundation to 2 students we'll be getting the sports captains to organise some practices during lunch time breaks.


Running club will be held at the school oval, starting at 8:10am and concluding at 8:30am. It will be conducted on Monday's and Thursday mornings on the following dates: 

Thursday 27th Feb, Mon 2nd March, Thursday 5th March and 12th March, Monday 16th March.


St Mark's has formed a partnership to have Dingley Tennis club conduct lessons at our school grounds after school for any children that is interested. The cost for an 8 week term is only $115- .These lessons will be held for children from Foundation to Year 4 only. They will be held on the following days:
Foundation Tuesdays 3:30-4:15pm  Grade 1s Wednesdays 3:30 – 4.15pm  Grade 2s Thursdays 3:30 – 4.15pm Grade 3 & 4s Fridays 3:30 – 4.15pm

Week 3 and 4 of the SAKGP with 3/ 4 HD

Melbourne’s weather impacted our time in the garden last week.  We spent the first 40 minutes happily weeding and planting in the sunshine.  Then the clouds turned black and the downpour began. We were able to get some new broccoli and lettuce seedlings into one of our garden beds and I'm sure the new plants appreciated their first big drink.  While it rained, the Tomatoes and Eggplants groups planted some broccoli seeds into small paper pots so they could nurture them at home. We will be crossing our fingers that little seedlings will start to grow so your home gardens can begin.

In our kitchen garden classroom we were super lucky with lots of helpers as all groups +had a big task ahead.  On the menu we had beetroot dip, green bean and tomato salad, vegetable scrolls and spaghetti with garlic and spinach.  As we had a few surprise potatoes harvested from our garden, we decided to make another smooth and delicious mashed potato to go with it too.   

This week in the garden we cleared weeds out an old tire, put in some nice new soil and planted some chives.  Hopefully we can use these more throughout the coming weeks in the kitchen. We also planted a few bean seedlings and pulled out some more weeds.  The gardening students found more potatoes hiding deep down in the garden beds. So for the second week, the extra harvest allowed us to have an extra dish of mashed potatoes with our meal. It was delish!


The kitchen was buzzing with excitement as we cooked up one of our tastiest meals so far.  The cheesy vegemite scrolls, herbed yoghurt dip, watermelon salad and potato and cauliflower soup were mouthwatering.  The students were eager to sit down to eat and try all the food that we had prepared. Our library dining room was full with our wonderful students and helpers.  We were so lucky to have nine parents who could help this week. The students loved working with all our volunteers and then sharing our lunch together. Thank you to the following people who were so generous to give up their time and help us at some stage over the past fortnight.  Mary, Sensai Taylor, Miss Donald, Angela, Frank, Julia (Sophie A), Yada (Regan), Bec (Leo), Ros (Harrison), Ximena (Antonio), Danielle (Luke), Les (Sophie R), Tanya (Brooklyn) Edmond (Tammara), Jenny and Kelly (Jai). Our SAKGP wouldn’t be so successful without you!

CSEF- Camps, Sports & Excusions Fund

Criteria 1 - Eligibility

The applicant must be one of the following:

  1. a parent/carer (of the relevant student) who is:
    • on the first day of term one (28 January 2020) or the first day of term two (14 April 2020) an eligible beneficiary of either a Centrelink Health Care Card or a Pensioner Concession Card; or
    • an eligible beneficiary of a Veterans Affairs Gold Card; or
  2. a temporary foster carer; or
  3. the parent/carer of a student who is 16 years or older and who holds a valid concession card (such as a Youth Allowance Health Care Card or Disability Support Pension Card).

The parent/carer must submit an application to the school prior to the end of term 2.

Parents/carer who receive a carer allowance on behalf of a student, or any other benefit or allowance not income tested by Centrelink, are not eligible for the CSEF payment unless they also meet the above eligibility criterion.

Where the parent/carer is seeking eligibility based on holding a Centrelink Health Care Card or a Pensioner Concession Card, eligibility will be determined when the relevant concession card successfully validates with Centrelink on either the first day of term one or term two.

If the eligible card is in the name of the student, the fund is only granted to that student, not their siblings.

Payment amounts

Payments amounts for 2020 are:

  • $125 per year for eligible primary school students
  • $225 per year for eligible secondary school students.


Payments are made directly to the school and are tied to the student.

  • from March onwards each year where the parent/carer’s concession card is assessed as valid on the first day of term 1; and
  • during term 2 where the parent/carer’s concession card is assessed as valid on the first day of term 2.

Applications can be received over term one and two. Payments are for the application year and cannot be claimed for previous years.

The St Marks Community Obstacle Course Colour Explosion event is coming up in just over 2 weeks on Sunday the 15th of March.

Student fundraising has begun and we are looking forward to an event filled with fun, fitness and colour!!

For a minimum of $10 or more fund raised by each student, they will receive an incentive prize AND will then be able to participate and enjoy the colour explosion obstacle course on the day. The more money they raise, the more awesome the prizes they get!!!
