Principal's Update

Heading

Dear Families, Students and Community Members,

John Monash Science School visit

To reward high performing VCE students I organised an excursion on Tuesday to spend half a day at John Monash Science School. It was an opportunity for some of our Year 11 and 12 students to visit a high-performing state school, observe a different learning environment in action and engage in discussions with Year 12 students about how they approach their studies with tips on VCE learning strategies. Ideas from all students, in relation to SAC and exam preparation, use of reading time and utilising the set exam time period effectively, ways of minimising stress and leading a balance life during VCE, were collated and we plan to circulate this document to all students in Year 11 and 12 at both schools.

I would like to share some of our students' feedback about their experience:

“It was comforting to see students from other schools under similar pressures – allowing us to connect in open discussion.”

“It was a great opportunity to share ideas with high-achieving students and enabled us to understand that we aren’t that different and they have the same VCE-related stresses.”

“Today was a rewarding and fantastic opportunity for us to engage in mutual conversations about VCE, stress relief, time management and study in addition to getting to know each other.”

“It was an interesting experience to share different struggles about VCE and brainstorm strategies to improve how to study and deal with stress.”

“I really enjoyed our visit for the opportunity to connect with other students and compare VCE experiences and tips, as well as having a great time. My cheeks hurt from smiling!”

“I enjoyed the excursion as I was able to bond and connect with other students. I was able to gain insight from different students and see a different perspective.”

“I thought that the excursion was a good use of our time and that there were excellent study tips passed around.”

Staffing News for Term 3

This semester we welcome back Lauren Mc Ivor from family leave. Lauren returns working three days a week teaching Year 8 Communication and Middle School PE/Health. We are delighted to retain Georgia Davey on staff (she had been replacing Lauren), due to the changes in a number of leadership positions, with Jen Roep remaining at Melbourne Girls for this year as Acting Assistant Principal, and the need to cover some classes. This includes an extra staff member into the Year 11 VCAL program.

Senior School Information Night

All students in Year 9 and 10 had the opportunity to attend the VCE/VCAL Information Night and Subject Expo last Thursday night. The Subject Expo provided students and parents with an opportunity to learn about and participate in aspects of every VCE and VCAL subject we have for students to select from at Mordialloc College. Thanks to Joanne Greenhalgh - Acting AP for Senior School, Jane Jamieson - Careers and Pathways Coordinator, Robyn Wilson – Director of Senior School and Alice Leppin - SEAL coordinator, for providing such an informative night for our students and parents. There were also many teachers involved in setting up the event and running a section for their subject at the Expo night. Students will be involved in course counselling sessions early next term where their final subject selections for 2019 will be decided upon in consultation with their parents.

French Poetry Competition

Congratulations to the following students who made it through to the finals to be held at the Alliance Française de Melbourne in St Kilda:

Year 7 – Jordan Shenouda and Lana Selthofer                                                        Year 8 – Dechlan Burkitt

Year 9 – Elisa Sarsini

Year 10 – Noreigh Zuniga

The Year 7 & 8 students competed on Sunday 24 June and the Year 9 & 10 students will be competing on 29 July. Thanks to our LOTE Learning Area leader, Ms Peerbux, for organising this opportunity for our students and for her preparedness to support these students at the competitions held on a Sunday.

End of Semester Reports

The end of semester reports for all students will be available on the parent and student portals on Compass from 1.30pm on Friday 29 June. I encourage all parents to discuss the report with their student/s over the holiday break and put appropriate actions in place to address any highlighted areas for improvement.

VCE/VCAL Parent-Teacher interviews

A reminder that VCE and VCAL Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held in the first week of next term on Wednesday 18 July. These will be conducted in the Year 8 Enquiry Zone, from 3.00 pm to 6.30 pm. With Unit 1 and 3 completed, and students having started Unit 2 and 4, this is an excellent time to obtain feedback and advice from your child’s teachers to help inform and target their learning for the remainder of this year. Likewise, it is an opportunity for parents of VCAL students to discuss with teachers any learning outcomes that still need to be met. Bookings opened last week via the Compass Portal. If you experience any difficulties booking in, please contact the General Office for assistance.

Senior Formal

A highlight of the senior calendar year is the Senior Formal, held this Friday 29 June at Southern Golf Club. Thank you to Mr Tim Randell, Year 12 Coordinator and our Special Events Captains, Dilara Isikili and Holly MacMillan, for organising this event. We remind students to enjoy themselves in a safe and responsible manner and hope they have a memorable evening with their friends and teachers.

We now come to the end of a very busy and productive term and I would like to wish all members of our community a safe and restful break.

Thank you to their wonderful parents who also committed to this exclusive opportunity.

Here is what the boys had to say:

Dechlan: “It was great. The staff were friendly and helped with my nervousness. Merci to Madame Peerbux for her support.”

Jordan: “I really enjoyed reciting my poem at the Alliance Française in St Kilda. I was really nervous when I was waiting, but once I got it done, it felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders!”

Visitors from Vietnam

On Tuesday 12 June, we were visited by ten students from Year 4 to Year 9, one teacher, two agents from Vietnam and a teacher from a local school. They toured all the College, viewing various classes. Some of our Year 7 students showed them how to play footy and then let them have a kick on the footy oval. A great time was had by all the students.

I would like to thank Mr Moffat, Ms Sinclair, Mr Williams, Mr Sadler, Mr Cummins, Mr Newsome and Ms Douglas for their kind help.

Special thanks to Ms Evans and the Year 7 students who gave the visitors a very warm welcome and played with them. As they were leaving the school some of the students said they would like to come back the next day.

Many thanks,

Li Ping Virgo

International Student Coordinator

Fundraising

Fundraising for Smith Family

The 5c collection is now fully up and running. We encourage all students to bring in loose 5c coins on a regular basis and add them to their House jar in the Hub. House points are awarded for reaching certain heights on the jars and a grand prize will be awarded to the House who fills their jar first. Currently, Iwala (Red House) is in the lead...

All money raised is being donated to The Smith Family to support their extraordinary work in supporting the education of disadvantaged children and breaking the cycle of poverty.

Thank you for your support.

Use of devices in the HUB

eLearning Update

From the beginning of Semester 2, students are no longer permitted to play games on their iPads or computers in the Hub before school, at recess or at lunch. Previously we had Tech-free Tuesdays and Thursdays, where students were not permitted to use devices on these days, but were allowed to game on the other days of the week. As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that students are using digital devices in the safest and most appropriate manner, we have decided that playing games at school is not an appropriate use of students’ devices. This decision was made primarily due to concerns regarding the amount of screen time students are experiencing and the risk of gaming addiction. Students are, of course, able to use their devices in the Hub at any time to complete school work. If you have any concerns or queries regarding these changes, please feel free to contact me at the College.
