Principal's Message

New newsletter format

Hopefully you are enjoying reading the newsletter in this new format.  iNewsletter is a responsive newsletter and automatically changes its layout to support desktop, mobile and tablet viewing.  This means that you can access the newsletter on any device and the program will modify the format so that it’s easy to read.  This new platform also allows us to easily add photos and videos without worrying about the size of the file and formatting.  This is our first attempt with iNewsletter and we would really appreciate feedback regarding the new format.  Please also let us know if there is anything else that you would like in your weekly newsletter.

Billanook Primary School, School Leaders 2020

It was with great pleasure that I was involved in announcing the 2020 Billanook Primary School Leaders.  The Level 5/6 children did a fantastic job with their speeches.  We were impressed with the quality of potential leaders this year. 

 

We recognise this year that there have been quite a few very capable leaders who have missed out on official leadership positions.  We added two extra leaders in the area of ICT as well as creating a  group called ‘Special Projects’ to provide further opportunities for our outstanding Level 6 children. The Special Projects group will be involved in leading authentic projects across the school, the first one being organising the design and creation of a mural in our courtyard area.  The Special Projects leaders will be rotated throughout the year depending on the project.

Working Bee - Friday 21 February from 3:30 - 6pm

Working Bees are a fantastic way to meet other parents and contribute to your child's school.

Our first Working Bee for the year will be held on Friday 22nd February from 3.30pm until 6:00pm. 

Please help us clean up our school grounds ready for our  upcoming Community Welcome Evening! 

We would really appreciate your help. Afternoon tea will be served.

Uniform Shop

As you are aware, our Uniform Shop will be run by Spartan School Supplies as of Term 2.  What this means for the school community is that we will have an online portal where all uniform purchasing will take place.  Orders will be processed online and will be delivered to the school, or your home.  Families will also be able to call into the Spartan School Supplies shop in Bayswater North (opposite Bunnings) and purchase uniform from the special Billanook Primary School uniform stand.  We believe this will provide our families with much more flexibility when purchasing uniform.  Our second hand uniform shop will be open at school on a monthly basis. 

 

The transition to Spartans School Supplies and issues with ordering from China (Chinese New Year holidays and the Coranavirus) have meant that we are out of stock on some uniform items.  We currently don’t have polo shirts in sizes 6, 10 or 12 and they won’t be available till Term 2.  We do have second hand polo shirts that are in good condition if required.  We do have plenty of school dresses and school shorts available.

Teaching and Learning

This week in 100, students have been learning about retelling in reading. They have been working so hard and it has been wonderful to see them settle so well into Level 1. They have made a really successful start to the year and have been able to identify the beginning, middle and end of their stories.  Well done Mrs Wright and class 100!

Nominations for School Council Elections

An election is to be conducted for members of the school council of Billanook Primary School. Nomination forms will be available from the school office from Monday, the 10th of February and must be lodged by 4.00pm on Monday, the 17th of February, 2020.

 

The ballot (if required) will close at 4.00pm on Monday, the 2nd of March, 2020.

 

There are three parent member positions and one DET employee member positions vacant with the term of office commencing from the day after the date of declaration of the poll in 2020 to and inclusive of the date of the declaration of the poll in 2022.

 

Following the closing of nominations a list of the nominations received will be posted at the school.

If the number of nominations is less than the number of vacancies, a notice to that effect and calling for further nominations will be posted in a prominent position at the school.

Parents’ Club Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of our Parents’ Club will be held  on Tuesday 18th February in the staff room at 7.00pm. We encourage and welcome everyone to attend. Parents’ Club performs a vital role within our school community undertaking fundraising and social events.

 

Outlined in the attachment below are the executive committee positions, descriptions and a nomination form. Please feel free to drop your nominations into the school office prior to the AGM.

Traffic Reminder

Please assist the traffic flow at the end of the school day by not arriving until after 3.30 and moving into the spaces vacated. Cars waiting in line make Sheffield Rd congested and cause passing traffic to make dangerous decisions.  We can all help out in this situation by moving to the parking spaces we see vacated and moving promptly along the Kiss and Go path.

Working With Children Checks For Volunteers 

A Victorian Government Working With Children Check (WWC) will be required by all adults who undertake any voluntary work at Billanook.  This means anyone working in the school canteen, helpers in the classroom, school camps, computer lab etc.

 

Holding a Police Check is not enough. WWC is ongoing monitoring of the criminal records of those who hold a WWC Card. Since the 30th June 2008 it is compulsory for all volunteers to provide a current WWC.

 

To obtain a Working With Children Check you must now apply online at www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au. To complete the application form you must have:

  • an email address, so you can contacted
  • the address of every place you have lived in the last 5 years in Australia
  • the name, postal address and phone number in Australia for each organisation you will be doing paid or volunteer child-related work for
  • a printer that will print a legible copy of the Application summary.

After filling in the online form, finalise your application at a participating Australia Post retail outlet, by presenting your   application summary, proof of identity documents and a passport quality photo. Employee WWC Check applicants need to also pay a fee. Fees are non-refundable. 

Financial Assistance - Information for Parents

Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

 

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)
School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum.


CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.


If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.


The annual CSEF amount per student is:
• $125 for primary school students
• $225 for secondary school students

HOW TO APPLY
New applicants should contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef
If you applied for the CSEF at your child's school in 2019, you do not need to complete an application form in 2020 unless there has been a change in your family circumstances.
You only need to complete an application form if any of the following changes have occurred:

  • new student enrolments; your child has started or changed schools in 2020 or you did not apply in 2019.
  • changed family circumstances; such as a change of custody, change of name, concession card number, or new siblings commencing at the school in 2020.

 

Around the School

Yarra Valley FM 99.1 Radio Show Excursion

Last Tuesday, the 11th of February, 2020, four of our level 6 students represented Billanook Primary School at the Yarra Valley FM 99.1 Radio Station as presenters. Isabella G. (609), Josh M. (609), Xander M. (5/6 10) and Trinity R. (607) all did a wonderful job and most of all had a fantastic experience.

 

Literacy Partners Parent Workshops

Do you want to know how to help your child with reading and writing ?

If you have not already attended our LITERACY PARTNERS parent workshops please consider coming to the next series.  If only one parent has attended past sessions, here is an opportunity for the other to also hear this information. 

  • Wednesday 26th Feb - Understanding learning, and helping with Speaking and Listening
  •  Wednesday 4th March - Understanding and helping with Writing
  •  Wednesday 11th March - Understanding and helping with Reading

The Secret of Happy Children Screening for Parents

Billanook Primary School are excited to announce the screening of Stephen Biddulph's talk "The Secret of Happy Children". This is an engaging and enlightening talk which provides practical parenting advice that caters for children from birth to teenage years. As a parent and educator myself I could not recommend this talk strongly enough. Please find attached a flyer for this free event. RSVPs can be sent to school with your child and will be collected at the school office.

Whole School Production 2020

AUDITIONS FOR MAIN CAST ROLES
Students from Grades 3-6 are invited to audition for Main Cast roles for the Whole School Production of ‘Pinocchio’, the story of the wooden puppet that came to life!

 

Auditions will begin on Wednesday 26th February.

 

The role of Pinocchio will be shared by 2 students each performance night. 

NB: STUDENTS AUDITIONING NEED TO CHECK THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO PERFORM ON ONE OF THE PERFORMANCE NIGHTS (24TH AND 25TH AUGUST) IF THEY ARE CHOSEN FOR A  MAIN CAST ROLE. 

Any students wanting to audition must write their names onto the Audition List that their teachers will have in their classroom.  A list of roles will be outlined and students should select the role they wish to audition for. Students on the Audition List will then be sent home lines to learn. 

SOME ROLES REQUIRE SINGING. These are highlighted in yellow.          

Students will need to learn their lines off by heart and on the day they audition and try to perform to the best of their ability!  

 

NB: Any students who wish to audition but are unable to attend on the 26th February due to another appointment, are asked to notify me as soon as possible so that another time can be scheduled for their audition.

Canteen News

Classroom Cuisine Online Canteen Orders

In 2020 we will continue using our online canteen service. Classroom Cuisine will provide a weekly lunch order service to Billanook families. Lunch orders will be available on WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS.


All orders are placed online at www.classroomcuisine.com.au.  Payment is made at time of ordering through a secure banking gateway receiving both Visa and Mastercards. 

 

Orders can be placed online up until 8.30am on the day. Meals are then delivered to the school in approved plastic tubs with ice blocks to store the food at an appropriate temperature whilst in transit.

Attached below is a copy of the Classroom Cuisine Menu. You can choose either a 2 course or 3 course lunch. There are 30 options within each Course Menu each day.

 

A TWO Course Lunch costs $8.95 and a THREE Course Lunch costs $10.35, irrespective of the menu choices you make.

 

You will need to register on the webpage www.classroomcuisine.com.au and will need to supply the school and class details (ie: FD3 or 609) to make sure they know where to deliver the lunch. You can register more than one child. You will receive a password so that all future visits to the site are quick and easy.
