Prayer for the End of a School Year

At the end of this school year, we give thanks to God; For all the teaching and learning that has taken place in our school, both in and out of the classroom; For the talents and gifts that have been shared and the challenges that have been faced; For the burdens that have been lifted and the hurts that have been healed; For the respect and care that has been given.

We give thanks for the friendships that have just begun and for those that have grown; For the faith that has been lived in our daily struggles; For the hope that has lifted our hearts on the dark days, and for the love that has kept us going.

We give thanks for the community that we are, we ask you Lord - Bless our students and inspire them with confidence and calmness; Bless our families as we take our holidays, may our time together leave us with memories to cherish. Pour out your love on us so that we may return renewed and refreshed to continue our journey together.

Congratulations Graduates

Today, we farewell our Year 6 students. Many of these children have been members of the OLA community for eight years, some even longer. The week started with their Graduation Mass, a memorable night where they passed on their responsibilities to the 2019 Student Leaders. The celebrations continued with a Graduation Dinner where parents joined with their children to share a special meal, this was followed with a disco - a great night had by all! We wish these hard-working and dedicated students every success as they move into secondary school. May God bless them as they travel this next part of their journey and in the future as they grow into the best people they can be.

A Word from Our Graduate, Elena

Graduation week began on Monday night with a mass for Year 6 graduates, commencing with a  special entrance procession of Year 6 students with symbols of the most important things brought to the altar that represented our time at OLA.  All Year 6 students were given roles in the mass from reading bible passages, to carrying items to the altar and singing hymns.  The Year 6s presented a graduation song,  'I Will Remember You' by Miley Cyrus to their families which was a new for OLA this year and was an emotional experience. The song was about saying goodbye and looking forward to the future. The song was moving  for the graduates and parents and, luckily, Mr D brought a tissue box!!!

The Graduation dinner and disco on Tuesday night was another highlight for the Year 6s. The dinner was delicious thanks to Rosie Samuels who cooked all the incredible food and the graduates danced well into the night and even a few parents joined in. The disco was really fun!

On Thursday we went to Adventure World where according to Mr D "we ran amock" and even  Miss Figueira  joined the Year 6s on all the terrifying rides. This week has been very special to us and we thank Mr D and Miss Figueira for organising our graduation week and making it memorable.

Oh What A Night - End of Year Concert

Last Friday night OLA was rocking! What an overwhelming crowd of supporters came along to help celebrate the end of an amazing year! Each year level made Christmas come alive with a Christmas carol - our Year 5 and Year 6 modern version of Hark the Herald Angels Sing had us all bopping along. The children also dazzled us with the Dance piece they have been learning each week with Tina from Footsteps Dance. Our Around the World theme kept the night entertaining. Thank you to all of the families who joined us! We hope you enjoyed the surprise ending too - we have some very talented teachers!

End of Year Thanksgiving Mass

On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to come together with the Parish Community to thank God for a wonderful year. Our school is very fortunate to be spiritually guided by Fr. Ken D'Souza and we thank him for the support he has offered our children this year. We also farewelled staff who will not be returning in 2019. As mentioned previously, we wish Mrs Scoble, Mrs Hutton, Mrs Stillisano, Mrs McQuillian, Miss Croft, Miss Mannas, Mrs Saunders, Mrs Calleja and Mrs Ciullo all the best for 2019 and beyond - thank you for all you have contributed to OLA.

Water Fun Day

Yesterday, our Pre-Primary to Year 5 students had a fantastic Water Fun Day. We were very fortunate that the weather fined up and all students were able to celebrate the end of the year in a fun way with their friends! The children are to be commended for their outstanding behaviour and mature approach to the day.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Gift Donations

Thank you to all families for your generous donations of toys in supporting the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. Our school community donated just over 180 Christmas gifts which will be much appreciated by some lucky recicipents this Christmas.

Reflecting on 2018 and Looking Forward to 2019

As we say goodbye at the end of another school year, I reflect on my first year as principal of Our Lady's Assumption School. When I first entered the school in January, I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to become a part of this community. I have learnt so much over the year and feel privileged to have seen the community spirit flourish here at OLA. Your ongoing support of events such as; Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day, Grandparents' Day, Feast Days and, most importantly, in our classrooms has been invaluable. I thank you for your contributions and support to make OLA a great school.

I am especially proud of our students. This year they have worked so hard and have achieved so much. Their participation in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival, Write a Book in a Day, assemblies, liturgies and classroom programs has been unerring and they, too, should be proud of their achievements.

2019 is going to be full of new possibilities for the students of OLA. With the introduction of the Enterprise and Initiative, Targeted Intervention and Curriculum and Pedagogy roles, more opportunities will be available to enrich our students' learning experiences.

The year could not have been what it was without the supportive and dedicated staff here at OLA. Staff have implemented many changes to improve communication to families and broaden their teaching pedagogy. I wish them a restful, well-deserved holiday break and sincerely thank them for being on the OLA bus - together, we can Imagine, Believe and Succeed.

Thank You

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the families of OLA for their kind words and well wishes as 2018 draws to a close. Your generous gifts, cards and words have touched me deeply and I appreciate the time you have taken out of your busy lives to acknowledge myself and the staff of OLA.

Wishing all families in our community a happy and holy Christmas. I look forward to welcoming you back in 2019!

Greg Martin

What's Happening at OLA!

The children have read many Christmas books lately! Is it Christmas Yet?, is a book explaining all the steps which are required to make Christmas a special time of caring and sharing. The children have learnt about baby Jesus, decorated the classroom and a Christmas tree, brought in gifts for the poor, created Christmas cards and posted them in our classroom letter box and baked shortbread! Phew, we have even sung Christmas hymns and danced to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The best part is yet to come, and that is, performing in our very own concert and party, which we will share with our families on Thursday. This year, we have been busy making gifts to give to our family because we know how important it is to bring happiness to others at Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone and have a safe and happy holiday!

Mrs Petkovic

It is difficult to believe that we have come to the end of the Kindy year. We have been thinking about all of the special times we have had together and all the things we have learnt. Kindy is a very special year and we know that these children will look back on their Kindy year as a time where they could be whoever they wanted to be, a time where they could play and be with friends, and a time for fun! We would like to thank the children for bringing their smiles and energy to our room each day. We know they are all ready for Pre-Primary now and we wish them well.

Mrs Fruvall and Mrs Taylor

Year 1

Last Friday night, we had our End of Year Concert. We were very nervous before going on stage, however, we had lots of fun! We sang ‘Go Santa Go’ and we danced to ‘You’re Welcome’. It was very entertaining watching the other year groups and teachers perform their songs and dances.

In class, we have been reviewing what we have learnt throughout the year. We have also been preparing for the coming of Jesus. We have discussed the story of Jesus’ birth and completed lots of Christmas activities, we even made chocolate truffles for our families. Yesterday we had the OLA Water Fun Day. We had lots of fun getting wet and going down the slides.

We wish everyone a happy and wonderful Christmas filled with love, happiness and joy!

Miss Saraceni and Mrs Ravi

Year 3

We have been super busy in Year 3 over the past two weeks. The Scitech Spacedome came to OLA where we learnt a lot of interesting facts about different constellations. We sung and danced our hearts out at the Christmas concert. Our classroom has been visited by the glitter fairies, evidence of all of the Christmas art and crafts that we have been creating. With help from some wonderful parents, we managed to get all of our desks and chairs scrubbed clean in one afternoon. Thank you so much to those who were able to come and help. Finally, we had an absolute blast during our session at the Water Fun Day. Good times all round!

Mrs Tollis and Mrs Pilatti

Year 5

We cannot believe the 2018 School Year has come to an end. We have decided to go out with a HUGE SPLASH! We all had an amazing time at the Water Fun Day and got thoroughly wet. It has been a fantastic way to end the year and we would like to say a massive thank you to all our parents for their fabulous help and support throughout the Year. We couldn’t have done it without you!

On behalf of all the Year 5s we would like to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Ms Knight and Mr McIntyre

Earlier this year OLA participated in Write a Book In A Day. We recently were notified that the OLA 2018 Write a Book In A Day, Tag Tales, won the 'Best Illustrated Book' for their book Hacked in the WA Primary School Division. Congratulations to all involved.

Parents and Friends

Thank you and Merry Christmas to all!

To all the families and friends of OLA, thank you for your support of the P&F throughout 2018. It has been an amazing year, filled with community spirit and generosity.

In 2018, your support ensured our teachers were each able to spend $1000 on those extra special items for the classroom that the kids would otherwise have to do without. We were also able to contribute significantly to the Sensory Integration Program, which will hit its stride in 2019.

Recently the P&F committed to covering the cost of new smart TVs in all of the classrooms. This is a massive donation and one that we will tell you more about next year!

We're already looking ahead to a fabulous 2019, kicking off with the Family Fun Night on Friday 22 February. Mark the dates below in your calendar for next year, but please note that some of the dates may change slightly, depending on venues etc. and there will no doubt be more added!

And finally, from your P&F Team we wish you all a wonderful, safe and joy-filled Christmas break.

Music Tuition at OLA in 2019

In addition to their weekly class music lesson, our students have the opportunity to take instrumental tuition in a number of instruments at OLA, and this is funded directly by the  families. In 2019, all tuition will be provided by Keyed Up Music, to ensure consistency regarding scheduling and administration. All tutors are music graduates, and have current Working with Children checks and police clearance.

Next year, music lessons will commence no earlier than 10.50, so that students do not miss core learning time in the morning. Keyed Up Music will also devise rotating timetables, so the students do not miss the same lesson each week. This means that the student’s lesson will be on the same day, but the actual time will change each week. The instruments offered in 2019 are: piano, violin, guitar and drums. For further information, please see the information circular.

Year 5 Singers at Graduation Mass

We extend a word of thanks to the Year 5 students who  came to sing at the Graduation Mass last Monday night. Your presence and participation really helped to enhance the ceremony. Thanks is also due to the parents and families who facilitated your attendance.

Carol Singing at Dianella Plaza

We were invited to send some students to sing carols at Dianella Plaza on Monday. As our Years 5 and 6 students were busy with the Graduation Mass, we nominated 36 students from Year 4 to perform at the Plaza. The  children sang a selection of Christmas carols and songs, and also played a number of tunes on their recorders and xylophones. A large gathering of parents, friends and passers-by enjoyed our performance, and the students received a very enthusiastic response from the audience. Well done to all the students that took part.

Brother Ollys Wheelchairs

Earlier this week I delivered our collection of ring pulls to the Wheelchairs for Kids workshop in Wangara. Brother Olly Pickett was very grateful for our contribution. The ring pulls are sold to scrap metal suppliers and the money raised is used to purchase supplies to make the wheelchairs. These rough terrain wheelchairs are distributed to kids in 65 lesser developed countries. Over the years Brother Olly and his many helpers have produced over 28,000 chairs. This year Year 2M collected the most ring pulls and they will be treated to a pizza lunch on Friday 7 December to thank them for their efforts. Thank you for your efforts this year and remember, start collecting for next year.

The month of December is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Chosen before time to be the Mother of God Incarnate, Jesus Christ, God created Mary perfect and full of grace, preserving her from the stain of Original Sin. Mary Immaculate is the most beautiful fruit of the work of redemption accomplished by her Son, thereby making her the perfect model of holiness for all Christians.
