Principal's Report

Year 6 Graduation Class of 2018

Last night, Year 6 families and friends celebrated the graduation of 54 Year 6 students with a formal graduation ceremony, to mark the end of their 7 years of primary schooling. Prior to the formal part of the night, students and staff, many of which had taught these students over the past 7 years, enjoyed a delicious meal together.

I would like to acknowledge this outstanding and talented group of young people who have added so much to our school community as leaders, role models and friends to so many of our other students. Both staff and parents are certainly very proud of what they have achieved both as individuals and as the 2018 graduating group. One of the highlights of the ceremony were the skits prepared by the students which captured some wonderful memories and insights into their time at SSPS.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank all the Year 5 /6 teachers in 2018 for their dedication and commitment to ensuring that the Year 6’s final year at SSPS was a memorable one. Thanks to Clare Searle (Team Leader), Michelle Dodson, Maria Giannone-Perri, Aaron Tait and Faith Teh.

On behalf of all the SSPS community, I wish all the graduating Year 6 students a wonderful start to their secondary schooling in 2019 and that all their dreams for the future be realised.

School Captains

Special thanks to Jeremy and Sophie for being such wonderful role models and ambassadors in their role as school captains for the SSPS. No matter the challenges, they supported each other and especially me as a ‘first timer’ at the school and worked as a great team sharing responsibilities throughout the year. I have seen their confidence, public speaking and organisational skills grow throughout the year. Thank you and well done!

2019 Student Placement

Tomorrow students will be given the opportunity to meet their 2019 class teacher and find out who their classmates will be in 2019. Many hours have been spent on the creation of these classes, taking into account the needs of students, balancing academic performance and gender. We ask you to support the placements made and speak positively to your child about the year ahead for them.

Final Assembly and Early Dismissal

All students will be dismissed at 1.30pm on Friday 21st December 2018. Prior to dismissal we will be holding a final farewell assembly at 1.00pm. We will be acknowledging students leaving SSPS F-6.  The 2019 School Captains will be announced and Year 6 graduating students will be singing their graduation song. Parents are most welcome to attend our final assembly for 2018.

Finally, I would like to thank all students, staff, parents, carers, grandparents and School Council for your valued support and magnificent contribution throughout 2018. We have achieved much in 2018 and we have achieved it together working as a productive and generous school community.

To those families and staff who are leaving our school community, I would like to wish you all the very best for the future and thank you for your amazing contribution over your years at SSPS. Even in my short time at the school I am already well aware of the loss you will be to the SSPS community!

It is now time for all of us to take a well-earned rest and spend some additional, relaxing time with our families and friends and loved ones. I look forward to contributing and working with all members of the SSPS community in 2019.

I sincerely wish everyone a very safe and happy festive season with your families.

Helen

Assistant Principal

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

I would like to extend my heartfelt best wishes to all the students and their families at Syndal South Primary school.  2018 has been a fantastic year and the students and staff have achieved so much. As we reflect on the year there have been many amazing events and activities that have brought the community together. A few that come to mind include the sensational school concert and our athletics carnival.

Last night I was privileged to attend one of our final community events for the year - the Graduation Ceremony for our 2018 leaving class. I would like to congratulate all of our leaving students on their impeccable manners, their exceptional listening skills throughout the ceremony and their inspiring moves on the dance floor. As our grade 6 students leave for the next adventure and stage of their lives, I wish them to consider the words of Dr Seuss:

                                                                                 " Congratulations!
                                                                                  Today is your day.
                                                                           You're off to Great Places!
                                                                                You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
                                                                              You can steer yourself
                                                                          any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go".

To all of the students across the school who are not in grade 6 but are leaving Syndal for new schools I thank you for your time at our school and I also wish you and your families the best of luck.

Have a relaxing, well deserved and safe holiday break and I look forward to seeing you in 2019, bubbling with excitement for the new school year.

From the Science Captain...

As this is the last Rocket of the year I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who participated in the ‘Science Quiz’ and those who attended the ‘Science Club’. As the Science/Solar Captain, this year has had many highlights, some of them include - the '5/6 Science Fair’, the ‘John Monash Science Fair’ and of course ‘The Solar Challenge’ where we had huge success. I would also like to wish the Science Captains of next year all the very best. As mentioned in the assembly earlier this week I would strongly recommend that all the year 5/6’s try out for ‘The Solar Challenge’ next year because it is a very rewarding experience and we have such great resources at school. Overall it has been a great year and I hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Regards,

Rishab Eedula

From The Sports Desk

Merry Christmas

And a Happy New Year to everyone in the SSPS Community. Thank you all for your support over the year and I hope to see you all back on board next year. For those leaving Syndal South, a very special thank-you, especially to the Elliott, Piefke, Wilson, Burdeu, Gourevitch, Nguyen, Pande, Vimpani, Gould, Williamson, Lindau, Pola, Morley-Tusjak and Wijekulasuriya families for your wonderful support, of our sports program, over many years.

Be sure to have a safe and Merry Christmas and hope that Santa slam dunks you and your loved ones a bounty of gifts.

Year 3/4 Using Technology in PE

The Year 3/4's have been using QR Codes to come up with some novel ways in which to use sports equipment.

House Points

CONGRATULATIONS to Anyula on winning the house points competition for 2018. Points were collected each week, from the classrooms, which were rewarded to students based on our school values and expected behaviors, effort, etc. in the classroom.

Bike Ed

Congratulations to the Year 4 cohort on the successful completion of their Bike Ed Test. They had to ride a 2km course on their own, remembering all the road rules and bike handling skills they have been practising over the last 3 terms. A special thank you to those parents who were able to assist with the supervision of the test today.

With the school holidays fast approaching, it is a timely reminder to us all about the importance of wearing helmets, bike maintenance and general bike safety and traffic awareness.

Sports Awards

CONGRATULATIONS to Sameeksha and Erik on winning the RH Sports Award for 2018.

The award is presented to students whom we consider have achieved significant performances in the sporting programs that we run here at SSPS. Other criteria include sportsmanship, fair play, leadership and attitude towards their sport.

CONGRATULATIONS also to Jeremy on being awarded the SSV Academic and Sporting Achievement medal. The medal recognises the most outstanding student in our school who has achieved a high level academically, combined with a strong sporting contribution to the school. Jeremy is a leader within our school as he demonstrates sportsmanship and integrity. He is the student others will follow. Jeremy finds the positive in everyone and enjoys nothing more than being active. Jeremy is a very bright boy who loves the challenges associated with learning. He pushes himself to achieve exceptional academic results.

Jeremy has shown amazing success in his sporting experiences in 2018. Jeremy was involved with our school aerobics program where he became state and national champion. He also represented the school at division cross country and tennis. At a district level he was selected in basketball, soccer and swimming teams.

Grounds

Have you noticed the pristine condition of our school grounds recently? Well its all because of the TLC being given by our resident groundsman, parent Jeff Fuller who was seen braving the wintry condition last week to core the oval. We are so lucky to have him keeping his watchful eye over our grounds.

Holiday Borrowing

Anyone wanting to borrow sports equipment over the holiday period, should see me following the final assembly tomorrow.

Parents' Association

The AGM for the Parents' Association was held on 11th December 2018.  The meeting reviewed a very successful year.  We held over fifteen events and programs throughout the year.

Despite the PAs main function being Community Engagement we were still able to fundraise for the School's iPad program by raising approximately $7,000 by the end of 2018.

The Election of Office Bearers and Committee members were held with the following results:

President:  Lisa Macdermott

Vice President:  Deane Lam

Treasurer:  Kate Edwards-Davis

Secretary:  Ruwani Kumarapperuma

Committee Members:  Cathy Sadler, Wendy Au, Janine Stockdale, Sajila Raghu and Sisi Liang

Thank you to our outgoing Vice President Cathy Musco.  We appreciate all the work you did in this role for the last two years.

We wish to thank our long term Committee Members Catherine Devanny and Bronwen Morley who are stepping down from roles this year.

Catherine, thank you so much for your many years of hard work within the PA.  You have been an amazing asset to the team and your regular participation at the meetings will be missed.  We wish you, Simon and Isabelle a wonderful Grade 6 next year.

We also send our best wishes to Bronwen and Emily as they start their new adventure at Huntingtower. Thank you Bronwen for your many years of dedication to the PA.

It has been an excellent year to be involved with the PA.  The sense of community within Syndal South Primary is widely known, wonderful and very unique.  We have a very special school which we appreciate so much.   I very much look forward to seeing what we can achieve in 2019. Once again thank you for everyone who has worked so hard for our community and children.

Wishing you a Christmas season full of fun and a  very happy New Year.  See you in 2019!
